SAGRADA BIBLIANEW JERUSALEM
Por aquela mesma época, o tetrarca Herodes ouviu falar de Jesus.1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard about the reputation of Jesus
É por isso que ele faz tantos milagres.2 and said to his court, 'This is John the Baptist himself; he has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.'
Now it was Herod who had arrested John, chained him up and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.
João lhe tinha dito: Não te é permitido tomá-la por mulher!4 For John had told him, 'It is against the Law for you to have her.'
De boa mente o mandaria matar; temia, porém, o povo que considerava João um profeta.5 He had wanted to kil him but was afraid of the people, who regarded John as a prophet.
Mas, na festa de aniversário de nascimento de Herodes, a filha de Herodíades dançou no meio dos convidados e agradou a Herodes.6 Then, during the celebrations for Herod's birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before thecompany and so delighted Herod
Por isso, ele prometeu com juramento dar-lhe tudo o que lhe pedisse.7 that he promised on oath to give her anything she asked.
Por instigação de sua mãe, ela respondeu: Dá-me aqui, neste prato, a cabeça de João Batista.8 Prompted by her mother she said, 'Give me John the Baptist's head, here, on a dish.'
The king was distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he ordered it to begiven her,
e mandou decapitar João na sua prisão.10 and sent and had John beheaded in the prison.
The head was brought in on a dish and given to the girl, who took it to her mother.
Depois foram dar a notícia a Jesus.12 John's disciples came and took the body and buried it; then they went off to tell Jesus.
When Jesus received this news he withdrew by boat to a lonely place where they could be bythemselves. But the crowds heard of this and, leaving the towns, went after him on foot.
So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them and healed their sick.
Caía a tarde. When evening came, the disciples went to him and said, 'This is a lonely place, and time has slippedby; so send the people away, and they can go to the vil ages to buy themselves some food.'
Jesus, porém, respondeu: Não é necessário: dai-lhe vós mesmos de comer.16 Jesus replied, 'There is no need for them to go: give them something to eat yourselves.'
_17 But they answered, 'All we have with us is five loaves and two fish.'
Trazei-mos, disse-lhes ele.18 So he said, 'Bring them here to me.'
He gave orders that the people were to sit down on the grass; then he took the five loaves and thetwo fish, raised his eyes to heaven and said the blessing. And breaking the loaves he handed them to hisdisciples, who gave them to the crowds.
Todos comeram e ficaram fartos, e, dos pedaços que sobraram, recolheram doze cestos cheios.20 They al ate as much as they wanted, and they col ected the scraps left over, twelve baskets full.
Ora, os convivas foram aproximadamente cinco mil homens, sem contar as mulheres e crianças.21 Now about five thousand men had eaten, to say nothing of women and children.
And at once he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side while he sentthe crowds away.
E, chegando a noite, estava lá sozinho.23 After sending the crowds away he went up into the hil s by himself to pray. When evening came, hewas there alone,
Entretanto, já a boa distância da margem, a barca era agitada pelas ondas, pois o vento era contrário.24 while the boat, by now some furlongs from land, was hard pressed by rough waves, for there was ahead-wind.
Pela quarta vigília da noite, Jesus veio a eles, caminhando sobre o mar.25 In the fourth watch of the night he came towards them, walking on the sea,
Quando os discípulos o perceberam caminhando sobre as águas, ficaram com medo: É um fantasma! disseram eles, soltando gritos de terror.26 and when the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. 'It is a ghost,' they said, andcried out in fear.
Mas Jesus logo lhes disse: Tranqüilizai-vos, sou eu. Não tenhais medo!27 But at once Jesus cal ed out to them, saying, 'Courage! It's me! Don't be afraid.'
Pedro tomou a palavra e falou: Senhor, se és tu, manda-me ir sobre as águas até junto de ti!28 It was Peter who answered. 'Lord,' he said, 'if it is you, tel me to come to you across the water.'
Ele disse-lhe: Vem! Pedro saiu da barca e caminhava sobre as águas ao encontro de Jesus.29 Jesus said, 'Come.' Then Peter got out of the boat and started walking towards Jesus across thewater,
Mas, redobrando a violência do vento, teve medo e, começando a afundar, gritou: Senhor, salva-me!30 but then noticing the wind, he took fright and began to sink. 'Lord,' he cried, 'save me!'
No mesmo instante, Jesus estendeu-lhe a mão, segurou-o e lhe disse: Homem de pouca fé, por que duvidaste?31 Jesus put out his hand at once and held him. 'You have so little faith,' he said, 'why did you doubt?'
Apenas tinham subido para a barca, o vento cessou.32 And as they got into the boat the wind dropped.
Então aqueles que estavam na barca prostraram-se diante dele e disseram: Tu és verdadeiramente o Filho de Deus.33 The men in the boat bowed down before him and said, 'Truly, you are the Son of God.'
E, tendo atravessado, chegaram a Genesaré.34 Having made the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret.
As pessoas do lugar o reconheceram e mandaram anunciar por todos os arredores. Apresentaram-lhe, então, todos os doentes,35 When the local people recognised him they spread the news through the whole neighbourhood andtook al that were sick to him,
E, todos aqueles que nele tocaram, foram curados.36 begging him just to let them touch the fringe of his cloak. And al those who touched it were saved.
