1 Timothy 5

1 You should not rebuke an old man, but rather plead with him, as if he were your father; with young men, like brothers;	1 Ne traite pas durement un ancien, mais parle-lui comme à un père, et aux plus jeunes comme à tes frères.
2 with old women, like mothers; with young women, in all chastity, like sisters.	2 Parle aux femmes âgées comme à des mères, et aux jeunes comme à tes sœurs, en toute pureté.
3 Honor those widows who are true widows.	3 Prends soin des veuves qui sont vraiment veuves.
4 But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let her first learn to manage her own household, and to fulfill, in turn, her own obligation to her parents; for this is acceptable before God.	4 Quand une veuve a près d’elle des enfants qu’elle a mis au monde, ceux-ci doivent d’abord apprendre leurs devoirs envers leur propre famille et rendre à leurs parents ce qu’ils doivent. Voilà ce qui est correct devant Dieu.
5 But she who is truly a widow and is destitute, let her hope in God, and let her be urgent in supplications and prayers, night and day.	5 Une vraie veuve est celle qui reste seule et qui a mis en Dieu son espérance; et maintenant elle se consacre jour et nuit à la prière et la supplication.
6 For she who is living in pleasures is dead, while living.	6 Mais celle qui fait la fête est une morte en vie.
7 And give instruction in this, so that they may be beyond reproach.	7 Dis-le leur bien pour qu’on n’ait rien à leur reprocher.
8 But if anyone has no concern for his own, and especially for those of his own household, he has denied the faith, and he is worse than an unbeliever.	8 Si quelqu’un ne prend pas soin de ses proches, et spécialement ceux de sa maison, il renie la foi et il est pire qu’un incroyant.
9 Let a widow be chosen who is no less than sixty years of age, who was the wife of one husband,	9 Ne mets sur la liste des veuves que celle qui a passé soixante ans, qui a été la femme d’un seul homme
10 who has testimony of her good works: whether she has educated children, or has provided hospitality, or has washed the feet of the saints, or has ministered to those suffering tribulation, or has pursued any kind of good work.	10 et dont on a vu les bonnes œuvres. A-t-elle élevé ses enfants, a-t-elle su accueillir chez elle, a-t-elle servi les saints de passage, a-t-elle eu la préoccupation de ceux qui souffrent? En un mot, il faut qu’elle se soit dépensée à faire le bien.
11 But avoid the younger widows. For once they have flourished in Christ, they will want to marry,	11 Écarte les jeunes veuves. Quand elles en ont assez du Christ, elles veulent se marier
12 resulting in damnation, because they have disregarded the primacy of faith.	12 et se rendent coupables en brisant leur engagement antérieur.
13 And being at the same time also idle, they learn to go from house to house, being not only idle, but also talkative and curious, speaking of things which do not concern them.	13 Et puis elles apprennent à ne rien faire et traînent de maison en maison. Ne faisant rien, elles sont bavardes et indiscrètes, et elles parlent à tort et à travers.
14 Therefore, I want the younger women to marry, to procreate children, to be mothers of families, to provide no ready opportunity for the adversary to speak evil.	14 Donc je préfère que les jeunes se marient, qu’elles aient des enfants et s’occupent de leur maison. De cette façon elles ne donneront aucun prétexte à ceux qui sont prêts à nous critiquer.
15 For certain ones have already been turned back to Satan.	15 Déjà quelques-unes ont perdu leur chemin et suivent Satan.
16 If any among the faithful have widows, let him minister to them and not burden the Church, so that there may be enough for those who are true widows.	16 Si une personne croyante a des veuves, qu’elle les prenne en charge au lieu qu’elles soient un fardeau pour l’Église, et alors on aura assez pour celles qui sont de vraies veuves.
17 Let priests who lead well be held worthy of twice the honor, especially those who labor in the Word and in doctrine.	17 Les anciens qui savent présider méritent double rétribution, surtout ceux qui portent le poids de la prédication et de l’enseignement.
18 For Scripture says: “You shall not muzzle an ox as it is treading out the grain,” and, “The worker is worthy of his pay.”	18 L’Écriture l’a dit: Tu ne fermeras pas la bouche du bœuf qui bat le grain. Et encore: Le travailleur a droit à son salaire.
19 Do not be willing to accept an accusation against a priest, except under two or three witnesses.	19 Ne laisse pas accuser un ancien s’il n’y a pas au moins deux ou trois témoins.
20 Reprove sinners in the sight of everyone, so that the others may have fear.	20 Ceux qui sont coupables, tu les reprendras en public pour que les autres aussi fassent attention.
21 I testify before God and Christ Jesus and the elect Angels, that you should observe these things without prejudgment, doing nothing which shows favoritism to either side.	21 Mais je te le demande devant Dieu et devant Jésus Christ, et devant tous les saints anges: observe ces règles de façon impartiale et ne fais pas de favoritisme.
22 You should not be quick to impose hands on anyone, nor should you take part in the sins of outsiders. Keep yourself chaste.	22 N’impose les mains à personne à la légère, car tu te rendrais complice des fautes d’autrui. Tu dois rester inattaquable.
23 Do not continue to drink only water, but make use of a little wine, for the sake of your stomach and your frequent infirmities.	23 5:24 Il y a des gens dont les fautes sont connues avant toute enquête, et pour d’autres c’est seulement à ce moment-là.
24 The sins of some men have been made manifest, preceding them to judgment, but those of others are manifested later.	24 5:25 De la même façon les actions qui valent peuvent être connues, et sinon, elles ne pourront rester cachées.
25 Similarly, too, good deeds have been made manifest, but even when they are not, they cannot remain hidden.	25 5:23 (Ne bois pas que de l’eau. Prends aussi un peu de vin à cause de ton estomac et de tes fréquentes faiblesses.)
