Before the feast day of the Passover, Jesus knew that the hour was approaching when he would pass from this world to the Father. And since he had always loved his own who were in the world, he loved them unto the end.1 Before the festival of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that his hour had come to pass from this world tothe Father, having loved those who were his in the world, loved them to the end.
And when the meal had taken place, when the devil had now put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray him,2 They were at supper, and the devil had already put it into the mind of Judas Iscariot son of Simon, tobetray him.
knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands and that he came from God and was going to God,3 Jesus knew that the Father had put everything into his hands, and that he had come from God andwas returning to God,
he rose up from the meal, and he set aside his vestments, and when he had received a towel, he wrapped it around himself.4 and he got up from table, removed his outer garments and, taking a towel, wrapped it round his waist;
Next he put water into a shallow bowl, and he began to wash the feet of the disciples and to wipe them with the towel with which he was wrapped.5 he then poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with thetowel he was wearing.
And then he came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to him, “Lord, would you wash my feet?”6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, 'Lord, are you going to wash my feet?'
Jesus responded and said to him: “What I am doing, you do not now understand. But you shall understand it afterward.”7 Jesus answered, 'At the moment you do not know what I am doing, but later you wil understand.'
Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you will have no place with me.”8 'Never!' said Peter. 'You shal never wash my feet.' Jesus replied, 'If I do not wash you, you can haveno share with me.' Simon Peter said,
Simon Peter said to him, “Then Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!”9 'Well then, Lord, not only my feet, but my hands and my head as wel !'
Jesus said to him: “He who is washed need only wash his feet, and then he will be entirely clean. And you are clean, but not all.”10 Jesus said, 'No one who has had a bath needs washing, such a person is clean all over. You too areclean, though not all of you are.'
For he knew which one would betray him. For this reason, he said, “You are not all clean.”11 He knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said, 'though not al of you are'.
And so, after he washed their feet and received his vestments, when he had sat down at table again, he said to them: “Do you know what I have done for you?12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments again he went back to the table. 'Doyou understand', he said, 'what I have done to you?
You call me Teacher and Lord, and you speak well: for so I am.13 You cal me Master and Lord, and rightly; so I am.
Therefore, if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash the feet of one another.14 If I, then, the Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you must wash each other's feet.
For I have given you an example, so that just as I have done for you, so also should you do.15 I have given you an example so that you may copy what I have done to you.
Amen, amen, I say to you, the servant is not greater than his Lord, and the apostle is not greater than he who sent him.16 'In al truth I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, no messenger is greater than the one whosent him.
If you understand this, you shall be blessed if you will do it.17 'Now that you know this, blessed are you if you behave accordingly.
I am not speaking about all of you. I know those whom I have chosen. But this is so that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats bread with me shall lift up his heel against me.’18 I am not speaking about al of you: I know the ones I have chosen; but what scripture says must befulfil ed: 'He who shares my table takes advantage of me.
And I tell you this now, before it happens, so that when it has happened, you may believe that I am.19 I tel you this now, before it happens, so that when it does happen you may believe that I am He.
Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever receives anyone whom I send, receives me. And whoever receives me, receives him who sent me.”20 In all truth I tell you, whoever welcomes the one I send, welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me,welcomes the one who sent me.'
When Jesus had said these things, he was troubled in spirit. And he bore witness by saying: “Amen, amen, I say to you, that one among you shall betray me.”21 Having said this, Jesus was deeply disturbed and declared, 'In al truth I tel you, one of you is goingto betray me.'
Therefore, the disciples looked around at one another, uncertain about whom he spoke.22 The disciples looked at each other, wondering whom he meant.
And leaning against the bosom of Jesus was one of his disciples, the one whom Jesus loved.23 The disciple Jesus loved was reclining next to Jesus;
Therefore, Simon Peter motioned to this one and said to him, “Who is it that he is speaking about?”24 Simon Peter signed to him and said, 'Ask who it is he means,'
And so, leaning against the chest of Jesus, he said to him, “Lord, who is it?”25 so leaning back close to Jesus' chest he said, 'Who is it, Lord?'
Jesus responded, “It is he to whom I shall extend the dipped bread.” And when he had dipped the bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon.26 Jesus answered, 'It is the one to whom I give the piece of bread that I dip in the dish.' And when hehad dipped the piece of bread he gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot.
And after the morsel, Satan entered into him. And Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.”27 At that instant, after Judas had taken the bread, Satan entered him. Jesus then said, 'What you aregoing to do, do quickly.'
Now none of those sitting at table knew why he had said this to him.28 None of the others at table understood why he said this.
For some were thinking that, because Judas held the purse, that Jesus had told him, “Buy those things which are needed by us for the feast day,” or that he might give something to the needy.29 Since Judas had charge of the common fund, some of them thought Jesus was telling him, 'Buy whatwe need for the festival,' or tel ing him to give something to the poor.
Therefore, having accepted the morsel, he went out immediately. And it was night.30 As soon as Judas had taken the piece of bread he went out. It was night.
Then, when he had gone out, Jesus said: “Now the Son of man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him.31 When he had gone, Jesus said: Now has the Son of man been glorified, and in him God has beenglorified.
If God has been glorified in him, then God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him without delay.32 If God has been glorified in him, God wil in turn glorify him in himself, and wil glorify him very soon.
Little sons, for a brief while, I am with you. You shall seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you are not able to go,’ so also I say to you now.33 Little children, I shal be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and, as I told the Jews,where I am going, you cannot come.
I give you a new commandment: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, so also must you love one another.34 I give you a new commandment: love one another; you must love one another just as I have lovedyou.
By this, all shall recognize that you are my disciples: if you will have love for one another.”35 It is by your love for one another, that everyone wil recognise you as my disciples.
Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus responded: “Where I am going, you are not able to follow me now. But you shall follow afterward.”36 Simon Peter said, 'Lord, where are you going?' Jesus replied, 'Now you cannot fol ow me where I amgoing, but later you shall fol ow me.'
Peter said to him: “Why am I unable to follow you now? I will lay down my life for you!”37 Peter said to him, 'Why can I not fol ow you now? I will lay down my life for you.'
Jesus answered him: “You will lay down your life for me? Amen, amen, I say to you, the rooster will not crow, until you deny me three times.”38 'Lay down your life for me?' answered Jesus. 'In al truth I tel you, before the cock crows you wilhave disowned me three times.'
