Now the feast of Passover and of Unleavened Bread was two days away. And the leaders of the priests, and the scribes, were seeking a means by which they might deceitfully seize him and kill him.1 Faltaban dos días para la Pascua y los Azimos. Los sumos sacerdotes y los escribas buscaban cómo prenderle con engaño y matarle.
But they said, “Not on the feast day, lest perhaps there may be a tumult among the people.”2 Pues decían: «Durante la fiesta no, no sea que haya alboroto del pueblo».
And when he was in Bethania, in the house of Simon the leper, and was reclining to eat, a woman arrived having an alabaster container of ointment, of precious spikenard. And breaking open the alabaster container, she poured it over his head.3 Estando él en Betania, en casa de Simón el leproso, recostado a la mesa, vino una mujer que traía un frasco de alabastro con perfume puro de nardo, de mucho precio; quebró el frasco y lo derramó sobre su cabeza.
But there were some who became indignant within themselves and who were saying: “What is the reason for this waste of the ointment?4 Había algunos que se decían entre sí indignados: «¿Para qué este despilfarro de perfume?
For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and been given to the poor.” And they murmured against her.5 Se podía haber vendido este perfume por más de trescientos denarios y habérselo dado a los pobres». Y refunfuñaban contra ella.
But Jesus said: “Permit her. What is the reason that you trouble her? She has done a good deed for me.6 Mas Jesús dijo: «Dejadla. ¿Por qué la molestáis? Ha hecho una obra buena en mí.
For the poor, you have with you always. And whenever you wish, you are able to do good to them. But you do not have me always.7 Porque pobres tendréis siempre con vosotros y podréis hacerles bien cuando queráis; pero a mí no me tendréis siempre.
But she has done what she could. She has arrived in advance to anoint my body for burial.8 Ha hecho lo que ha podido. Se ha anticipado a embalsamar mi cuerpo para la sepultura.
Amen I say to you, wherever this Gospel shall be preached throughout the entire world, the things she has done also shall be told, in memory of her.”9 Yo os aseguro: dondequiera que se proclame la Buena Nueva, en el mundo entero, se hablará también de lo que ésta ha hecho para memoria suya».
And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went away, to the leaders of the priests, in order to betray him to them.10 Entonces, Judas Iscariote, uno de los Doce, se fue donde los sumos sacerdotes para entregárselo.
And they, upon hearing it, were gladdened. And they promised him that they would give him money. And he sought an opportune means by which he might betray him.11 Al oírlo ellos, se alegraron y prometieron darle dinero. Y él andaba buscando cómo le entregaría en momento oportuno.
And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they immolate the Passover, the disciples said to him, “Where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?”12 El primer día de los Azimos, cuando se sacrificaba el cordero pascual, le dicen sus discípulos: «¿Dónde quieres que vayamos a hacer los preparativos para que comas el cordero de Pascua?»
And he sent two of his disciples, and he said to them: “Go into the city. And you will meet a man carrying a pitcher of water; follow him.13 Entonces, envía a dos de sus discípulos y les dice: «Id a la ciudad; os saldrá al encuentro un hombre llevando un cántaro de agua; seguidle
And wherever he will have entered, say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says: Where is my dining room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’14 y allí donde entre, decid al dueño de la casa: “El Maestro dice: ¿Dónde está mi sala, donde pueda comer la Pascua con mis discípulos?”
And he will show you a large cenacle, fully furnished. And there, you shall prepare it for us.”15 El os enseñará en el piso superior una sala grande, ya dispuesta y preparada; haced allí los preparativos para nosotros».
And his disciples departed and went into the city. And they found it just as he had told them. And they prepared the Passover.16 Los discípulos salieron, llegaron a la ciudad, lo encontraron tal como les había dicho, y prepararon la Pascua.
Then, when evening came, he arrived with the twelve.17 Y al atardecer, llega él con los Doce.
And while reclining and eating with them at table, Jesus said, “Amen I say to you, that one of you, who eats with me, will betray me.”18 Y mientras comían recostados, Jesús dijo: «Yo os aseguro que uno de vosotros me entregará, el que come conmigo».
But they began to be sorrowful and to say to him, one at a time: “Is it I?”19 Ellos empezaron a entristecerse y a decirle uno tras otro: «¿Acaso soy yo?»
And he said to them: “It is one of the twelve, who dips his hand with me in the dish.20 El les dijo: «Uno de los Doce que moja conmigo en el mismo plato.
And indeed, the Son of man goes, just as it has been written of him. But woe to that man by whom the Son of man will be betrayed. It would be better for that man if he had never been born.”21 Porque el Hijo del hombre se va, como está escrito de él, pero ¡ay de aquel por quien el Hijo del hombre es entregado! ¡Más le valdría a ese hombre no haber nacido!»
And while eating with them, Jesus took bread. And blessing it, he broke it and gave it to them, and he said: “Take. This is my body.”22 Y mientras estaban comiendo, tomó pan, lo bendijo, lo partió y se lo dio y dijo: «Tomad, este es mi cuerpo».
And having taken the chalice, giving thanks, he gave it to them. And they all drank from it.23 Tomó luego una copa y, dadas las gracias, se la dio, y bebieron todos de ella.
And he said to them: “This is my blood of the new covenant, which shall be shed for many.24 Y les dijo: «Esta es mi sangre de la Alianza, que es derramada por muchos.
Amen I say to you, that I will no longer drink from this fruit of the vine, until that day when I will drink it new in the kingdom of God.”25 Yo os aseguro que ya no beberé del producto de la vid hasta el día en que lo beba nuevo en el Reino de Dios».
And having sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.26 Y cantados los himnos, salieron hacia el monte de los Olivos.
And Jesus said to them: “You will all fall away from me in this night. For it has been written: ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’27 Jesús les dice: «Todos os vais a escandalizar, ya que está escrito: Heriré al pastor y se dispersarán las ovejas.
But after I have risen again, I will go before you to Galilee.”28 Pero después de mi resurrección, iré delante de vosotros a Galilea».
Then Peter said to him, “Even if all will have fallen away from you, yet I will not.”29 Pedro le dijo: «Aunque todos se escandalicen, yo no».
And Jesus said to him, “Amen I say to you, that this day, in this night, before the rooster has uttered its voice twice, you will deny me three times.”30 Jesús le dice: «Yo te aseguro: hoy, esta misma noche, antes que el gallo cante dos veces, tú me habrás negado tres».
But he spoke further, “Even if I must die along with you, I will not deny you.” And they all spoke similarly also.31 Pero él insistía: «Aunque tenga que morir contigo, yo no te negaré». Lo mismo decían también todos.
And they went to a country estate, by the name of Gethsemani. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I pray.”32 Van a una propiedad, cuyo nombre es Getsemaní, y dice a sus discípulos: «Sentaos aquí, mientras yo hago oración».
And he took Peter, and James, and John with him. And he began to be afraid and wearied.33 Toma consigo a Pedro, Santiago y Juan, y comenzó a sentir pavor y angustia.
And he said to them: “My soul is sorrowful, even unto death. Remain here and be vigilant.”34 Y les dice: «Mi alma está triste hasta el punto de morir; quedaos aquí y velad».
And when he had proceeded on a little ways, he fell prostrate on the ground. And he prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass away from him.35 Y adelantándose un poco, caía en tierra y suplicaba que a ser posible pasara de él aquella hora.
And he said: “Abba, Father, all things are possible to you. Take this chalice from me. But let it be, not as I will, but as you will.”36 Y decía: «¡Abbá, Padre!; todo es posible para ti; aparta de mí esta copa; pero no sea lo que yo quiero, sino lo que quieras tú».
And he went and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter: “Simon, are you sleeping? Were you not able to be vigilant for one hour?37 Viene entonces y los encuentra dormidos; y dice a Pedro: «Simón, ¿duermes?, ¿ni una hora has podido velar?
Watch and pray, so that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”38 Velad y orad, para que no caigáis en tentación; que el espíritu está pronto, pero la carne es débil».
And going away again, he prayed, saying the same words.39 Y alejándose de nuevo, oró diciendo las mismas palabras.
And upon returning, he found them sleeping yet again, (for their eyes were heavy) and they did not know how to respond to him.40 Volvió otra vez y los encontró dormidos, pues sus ojos estaban cargados; ellos no sabían qué contestarle.
And he arrived for the third time, and he said to them: “Sleep now, and take rest. It is enough. The hour has arrived. Behold, the Son of man will be betrayed into the hands of sinners.41 Viene por tercera vez y les dice: «Ahora ya podéis dormir y descansar. Basta ya. Llegó la hora. Mirad que el Hijo del hombre va a ser entregado en manos de los pecadores.
Rise up, let us go. Behold, he who will betray me is near.”42 ¡Levantaos! ¡vámonos! Mirad, el que me va a entregar está cerca».
And while he was still speaking, Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, arrived, and with him was a large crowd with swords and clubs, sent from the leaders of the priests, and the scribes, and the elders.43 Todavía estaba hablando, cuando de pronto se presenta Judas, uno de los Doce, acompañado de un grupo con espadas y palos, de parte de los sumos sacerdotes, de los escribas y de los ancianos.
Now his betrayer had given them a sign, saying: “He whom I shall kiss, it is he. Take hold of him, and lead him away cautiously.”44 El que le iba a entregar les había dado esta contraseña: «Aquel a quien yo dé un beso, ése es, prendedle y llevadle con cautela».
And when he had arrived, immediately drawing near to him, he said: “Hail, Master!” And he kissed him.45 Nada más llegar, se acerca a él y le dice: «Rabbí», y le dio un beso.
But they laid hands on him and held him.46 Ellos le echaron mano y le prendieron.
Then a certain one of those standing near, drawing a sword, struck a servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.47 Uno de los presentes, sacando la espada, hirió al siervo del Sumo Sacerdote, y le llevó la oreja.
And in response, Jesus said to them: “Have you set out to apprehend me, just as if to a robber, with swords and clubs?48 Y tomando la palabra Jesús, les dijo: «¿Como contra un salteador habéis salido a prenderme con espadas y palos?
Daily, I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not take hold of me. But in this way, the scriptures are fulfilled.”49 Todos los días estaba junto a vosotros enseñando en el Templo, y no me detuvisteis. Pero es para que se cumplan las Escrituras».
Then his disciples, leaving him behind, all fled away.50 Y abandonándole huyeron todos.
Now a certain young man followed him, having nothing but a fine linen cloth over himself. And they took hold of him.51 Un joven le seguía cubierto sólo de un lienzo; y le detienen.
But he, rejecting the fine linen cloth, escaped from them naked.52 Pero él, dejando el lienzo, se escapó desnudo.
And they led Jesus to the high priest. And all the priests and the scribes and the elders came together.53 Llevaron a Jesús ante el Sumo Sacerdote, y se reúnen todos los sumos sacerdotes, los ancianos y los escribas.
But Peter followed him from a distance, even into the court of the high priest. And he sat with the servants at the fire and warmed himself.54 También Pedro le siguió de lejos, hasta dentro del palacio del Sumo Sacerdote, y estaba sentado con los criados, calentándose al fuego.
Yet truly, the leaders of the priests and the entire council sought testimony against Jesus, so that they might deliver him to death, and they found none.55 Los sumos sacerdotes y el Sanedrín entero andaban buscando contra Jesús un testimonio para darle muerte; pero no lo encontraban.
For many spoke false testimony against him, but their testimony did not agree.56 Pues muchos daban falso testimonio contra él, pero los testimonios no coincidían.
And certain ones, rising up, bore false witness against him, saying:57 Algunos, levantándose, dieron contra él este falso testimonio:
“For we heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple, made with hands, and within three days I will build another, not made with hands.’ ”58 «Nosotros le oímos decir: Yo destruiré este Santuario hecho por hombres y en tres días edificaré otro no hecho por hombres».
And their testimony did not agree.59 Y tampoco en este caso coincidía su testimonio.
And the high priest, rising up in their midst, questioned Jesus, saying, “Do you have nothing to say in answer to the things that are brought against you by these ones?”60 Entonces, se levantó el Sumo Sacerdote y poniéndose en medio, preguntó a Jesús: «¿No respondes nada? ¿Qué es lo que éstos atestiguan contra ti?»
But he was silent and gave no answer. Again, the high priest questioned him, and he said to him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed God?”61 Pero él seguía callado y no respondía nada. El Sumo Sacerdote le preguntó de nuevo: «¿Eres tú el Cristo, el Hijo del Bendito?»
Then Jesus said to him: “I am. And you shall see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of the power of God and arriving with the clouds of heaven.”62 Y dijo Jesús: «Sí, yo soy, y veréis al Hijo del hombre sentado a la diestra del Poder y venir entre las nubes del cielo».
Then the high priest, rending his garments, said: “Why do we still require witnesses?63 El Sumo Sacerdote se rasga las túnicas y dice: «¿Qué necesidad tenemos ya de testigos?
You have heard the blasphemy. How does it seem to you?” And they all condemned him, as guilty unto death.64 Habéis oído la blasfemia. ¿Qué os parece?» Todos juzgaron que era reo de muerte.
And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face and to strike him with fists, and to say to him, “Prophesy.” And the servants struck him with the palms their hands.65 Algunos se pusieron a escupirle, le cubrían la cara y le daban bofetadas, mientras le decían: «Adivina», y los criados le recibieron a golpes.
And while Peter was in the court below, one of the maidservants of the high priest arrived.66 Estando Pedro abajo en el patio, llega una de las criadas del Sumo Sacerdote
And when she had seen Peter warming himself, she stared at him, and she said: “You also were with Jesus of Nazareth.”67 y al ver a Pedro calentándose, le mira atentamente y le dice: «También tú estabas con Jesús de Nazaret».
But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you saying.” And he went outside, in front of the court; and a rooster crowed.68 Pero él lo negó: «Ni sé ni entiendo qué dices», y salió afuera, al portal, y cantó un gallo.
Then again, when a maidservant had seen him, she began to say to the bystanders, “For this is one of them.”69 Le vio la criada y otra vez se puso a decir a los que estaban allí: «Este es uno de ellos».
But he denied it again. And after a little while, again those standing near said to Peter: “In truth, you are one of them. For you, too, are a Galilean.”70 Pero él lo negaba de nuevo. Poco después, los que estaban allí volvieron a decir a Pedro: «Ciertamente eres de ellos pues además eres galileo».
Then he began to curse and to swear, saying, “For I do not know this man, about whom you are speaking.”71 Pero él, se puso a echar imprecaciones y a jurar: «¡Yo no conozco a ese hombre de quien habláis!»
And immediately the rooster crowed again. And Peter remembered the word that Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he began to weep.72 Inmediatamente cantó un gallo por segunda vez. Y Pedro recordó lo que le había dicho Jesús: «Antes que el gallo cante dos veces, me habrás negado tres». Y rompió a llorar.
