Unto the end. A Psalm of David,1 [Psalm Of Asaph] The God of gods, Yahweh, is speaking, from east to west he summons the earth.
when Nathan the prophet came to him, after he went to Bathsheba.2 From Zion, perfection of beauty, he shines forth;
Be merciful to me, O God, according to your great mercy. And, according to the plentitude of your compassion, wipe out my iniquity.3 he is coming, our God, and wil not be silent. Devouring fire ahead of him, raging tempest around him,
Wash me once again from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.4 he summons the heavens from on high, and the earth to judge his people.
For I know my iniquity, and my sin is ever before me.5 'Gather to me my faithful, who sealed my covenant by sacrifice.'
Against you only have I sinned, and I have done evil before your eyes. And so, you are justified in your words, and you will prevail when you give judgment.6 The heavens proclaim his saving justice, 'God himself is judge.'Pause
For behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sinfulness did my mother conceive me.7 'Listen, my people, I am speaking, Israel, I am giving evidence against you, I, God, your God.
For behold, you have loved truth. The obscure and hidden things of your wisdom, you have manifested to me.8 'It is not with your sacrifices that I find fault, those burnt offerings constantly before me;
You will sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed. You will wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow.9 I will not accept any bul from your homes, nor a single goat from your folds.
In my hearing, you will grant gladness and rejoicing. And the bones that have been humbled will exult.10 'For all forest creatures are mine already, the animals on the mountains in their thousands.
Turn your face away from my sins, and erase all my iniquities.11 I know every bird in the air, whatever moves in the fields is mine.
Create a clean heart in me, O God. And renew an upright spirit within my inmost being.12 'If I am hungry I shall not tel you, since the world and all it holds is mine.
Do not cast me away from your face; and do not take your Holy Spirit from me.13 Am I to eat the flesh of bul s or drink the blood of goats?
Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and confirm me with an unsurpassed spirit.14 'Let thanksgiving be your sacrifice to God, fulfil the vows you make to the Most High;
I will teach the unjust your ways, and the impious will be converted to you.15 then if you call to me in time of trouble I wil rescue you and you wil honour me.'
Free me from blood, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue will extol your justice.16 But to the wicked, God says: 'What right have you to recite my statutes, to take my covenant on yourlips,
O Lord, you will open my lips, and my mouth will announce your praise.17 when you detest my teaching, and thrust my words behind you?
For if you had desired sacrifice, I would certainly have given it, but with holocausts, you will not be delighted.18 'You make friends with a thief as soon as you see one, you feel at home with adulterers,
A crushed spirit is a sacrifice to God. A contrite and humbled heart, O God, you will not spurn.19 your conversation is devoted to wickedness, and your tongue to inventing lies.
Act kindly, Lord, in your good will toward Zion, so that the walls of Jerusalem may be built up.20 'You sit there, slandering your own brother, you malign your own mother's son.
Then you will accept the sacrifice of justice, oblations, and holocausts. Then they will lay calves upon your altar.21 You do this, and am I to say nothing? Do you think that I am really like you? I charge you, indict youto your face.
'Think it out, you who forget God, or I wil tear you apart without hope of a rescuer.
Honour to me is a sacrifice of thanksgiving; to the upright I wil show God's salvation.'
