Job 32

CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINNEW JERUSALEM
But these three men ceased to answer Job, because he considered himself justified.1 These three men stopped arguing with Job, because he was convinced of his uprightness.
And Eliu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram, was angry and indignant. But he was angry against Job because he described himself to be just in the presence of God.2 But Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite, of the clan of Ram, became very angry. He fumed with rageagainst Job for thinking that he was right and God was wrong;
Moreover, he was indignant with his friends because they had not found a reasonable response, except in so far as they condemned Job.3 and he was equal y angry with the three friends for giving up the argument and thus putting God in thewrong.
Therefore, Eliu waited while Job was talking, for these were his elders that were speaking.4 While they and Job were talking, Elihu had waited, because they were older than he was;
But when he saw that these three were not able to respond, he was extremely angry.5 but when he saw that the three men had not another word to say in answer, his anger burst out.
And so Eliu the son of Barachel the Buzite responded by saying: I am younger in years, and you are more ancient; therefore, I kept my head low, for I was afraid to reveal to you my opinion.6 And Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite began to speak. He said: I am stil young, and you are old, so Iwas shy and hesitant to tel you what I know.
For I had hoped that greater age would speak, and that a multitude of years would teach wisdom.7 I thought, 'Age ought to speak, advancing years wil convey wisdom.'
But I see now that there is only breath in men, and that it is the inspiration of the Almighty that gives understanding.8 There is, you see, a spirit residing in humanity, the breath of God conferring intelligence.
The wise are not the aged, nor do the elders understand judgment.9 Great age does not give wisdom, nor seniority fair judgement.
Therefore, I will speak. Listen to me, and so I will show you my wisdom.10 And so I ask you for a hearing; now it is my turn to tel what I know.
For I have endured your words; I have paid attention to your deliberations, while you were being argumentative with words.11 Up to now, I was hanging on your words, I paid attention to your arguments as each of you chose hiswords.
And as long as I supposed that you were saying something, I considered; but now I see that there is none of you that is able to argue with Job and to respond to his words.12 I paid very close attention; and I see that none of you has confounded Job, not one of you has refutedwhat he says.
So that you will not say, “We have found wisdom,” God has thrown him down, not man.13 So do not say, 'We have found wisdom; our teaching is divine and not human.'
He has said nothing to me, and I will not respond to him according to your words.14 I am not going to follow the same line of argument; my reply to Job wil be couched in different terms.
Then they were filled with dread, and so they no longer responded, and they withdrew from their speechmaking.15 They are nonplussed for an answer, words have failed them.
Therefore, because I have waited and they have not been speaking, for they stood firm and did not respond at all,16 I have been waiting. Since they do not speak, since they have given up the argument,
I also will answer in my turn, and I will reveal my knowledge.17 now I shal have my say, my turn has come to say what I know.
For I am full of words, and the feeling in my gut inspires me.18 For I am ful of words and forced to speak by a spirit within me;
Yes, my stomach is like fermenting wine without a vent, which bursts the new containers.19 within me, it feels like new wine seeking a vent, bursting out of new wine-skins.
I should speak, but I will also breathe a little; I will open my lips, and I will answer.20 To gain relief, I must speak, I must open my lips and reply.
I will not esteem the reputation of a man, and I will not equate God with man.21 I shall not take anyone's side, I shall not flatter anyone.
For I do not know how long I will continue, and whether, after a while, my Maker might take me away.22 I do not know how to flatter -- or my Creator would make short work of me.
