1 Now Rehoboam set out for Shechem. For in that place all of Israel had convened, so that they might appoint him as king.	1 Roboão foi a Siquém, onde todo o Israel se tinha reunido para proclamá-lo rei.
2 But when Jeroboam, the son of Nabat, who was in Egypt, (indeed he had fled to that place from Solomon) had heard it, he promptly returned.	2 Jeroboão, filho de Nabat, estava nesse tempo no Egito, para onde tinha fugido para escapar ao rei Salomão. Soube disso e retornou. - Tinham-no mandado procurar.
3 And they summoned him, and he arrived with all of Israel. And they spoke to Rehoboam, saying:	3 Jeroboão e todo o Israel vieram, portanto, dizer a Roboão:
4 “Your father pressed upon us a very difficult yoke. You should govern us more lightly than your father, who imposed on us a heavy servitude, and so lift up some of the burden, so that we may serve you.”	4 Teu pai nos impôs um jugo pesado. Alivia, portanto, esta dura servidão e este jugo pesado que ele nos impôs. Nós seremos teus servos.
5 But he said, “Return to me after three days.” And when the people had gone away,	5 Voltai, respondeu ele, a mim daqui a três dias. E a multidão se retirou.
6 he took counsel with the elders, who had stood before his father Solomon while he was still living, saying, “What counsel would you give to me, so that I may respond to the people?”	6 O rei Roboão aconselhou-se então com os anciãos que tinham cercado seu pai Salomão durante sua vida. Que me aconselhais vós, disse-lhes ele, a responder a esse povo?
7 And they said to him, “If you please this people, and if you soothe them with words of clemency, they will be your servants for all days.”	7 Disseram: Se tu te mostras bom para com esse povo, e dás atenção a ele, se lhe falas com benevolência, será teu servo para sempre.
8 But he set aside the counsel of the elders, and he began to have discussion with the youth, who had been raised with him and who were among his companions.	8 Mas Roboão negligenciou o conselho que lhe davam os anciãos, para, por sua vez, consultar os jovens de sua roda, que tinham crescido com ele:
9 And he said to them: “How does it seem to you? Or how should I respond to this people, who have said to me, ‘Lift up the yoke that your father imposed upon us?’ ”	9 Que me aconselhais vós, disse-lhes ele, a responder a esse povo que me pede que eu alivie o jugo imposto a ele por meu pai?
10 But they responded like youths, having been raised with him in luxury, and they said: “So shall you speak to the people, who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy; you should lighten it,’ and so shall you respond to them: ‘My little finger is thicker than the back of my father.	10 Os jovens que tinham crescido com ele lhe responderam: Eis as palavras que terás para o povo que te disse: Teu pai colocou sobre nós um jugo pesado; alivia-o. - Dir-lhe-ás: Meu dedo mínimo é maior do que o ventre de meu pai.
11 My father imposed a heavy yoke upon you, and I will place more weight upon it. My father cut you with whips; truly, I will beat you with scorpions.’ ”	11 Impôs-vos meu pai um jugo pesado? Eu o tornarei mais pesado ainda. Ele vos castigou com açoites? Eu vos castigarei com escorpiões.
12 Then Jeroboam, and the entire people, went to Rehoboam on the third day, just as he had instructed them.	12 Três dias depois, Jeroboão, seguido de toda uma multidão, apresentou-se diante de Roboão, uma vez que o rei tinha dito: Voltai a mim depois de três dias.
13 And the king responded harshly, abandoning the counsel of the elders.	13 O rei respondeu-lhes com dureza.
14 And he spoke according to the will of the youths: “My father imposed a heavy yoke upon you, which I will make heavier. My father cut you with whips; truly, I will beat you with scorpions.”	14 Desprezou o conselho dos anciãos e deu-lhes uma resposta, no sentido do conselho de seus companheiros: Meu pai, disse ele, impôs-vos um jugo pesado? Eu torná-lo-ei mais pesado ainda. Castigou-vos meu pai com açoites? Eu castigar-vos-ei com escorpiões.
15 And he did not acquiesce to the pleadings of the people. For it was the will of God that his word be fulfilled, which he had spoken by the hand of Ahijah, the Shilonite, to Jeroboam, the son of Nabat.	15 Assim, pois, o rei não escutou o povo. Era isso uma disposição divina para a realização da promessa que Deus fizera a Jeroboão, filho de Nabat, por meio de Aías de Silo.
16 Then the entire people, speaking more harshly to the king, spoke to him in this way: “There is no portion for us in David, and there is no inheritance in the son of Jesse. Return to your dwellings, O Israel. Then you, O David, shall pasture your own house.” And Israel went away to their dwellings.	16 Ao ver que o rei não os escutava, o povo israelita lhe fez esta declaração: Que parte temos nós com Davi? Nada temos em comum com o filho de Isaí. Cada um para suas tendas, ó Israel! A ti compete cuidar de tua casa, Davi! E todos os israelitas voltaram para suas casas.
17 But Rehoboam reigned over the sons of Israel who were living in the cities of Judah.	17 Roboão só exerceu seu poder sobre os israelitas que ainda habitavam nas cidades de Judá.
18 And king Rehoboam sent Aduram, who was in charge of the tributes. And the sons of Israel stoned him, and he died. And so king Rehoboam hurried to climb into the chariot, and he fled to Jerusalem.	18 Enviou Adurão com a missão de aliviar os impostos; mas os israelitas apedrejaram-no e ele morreu. En tão o rei teve que se apressar em subir num carro e fugir para Jerusalém.
19 And Israel withdrew from the house of David, even to this day.	19 Foi assim que se produziu a dissidência da casa de Israel, que dura ainda hoje.
