1 Now Rehoboam set out for Shechem. For in that place all of Israel had convened, so that they might appoint him as king.	1 Fue Roboam a Siquem, porque todo Israel había ido a Siquem para proclamarle rey.
2 But when Jeroboam, the son of Nabat, who was in Egypt, (indeed he had fled to that place from Solomon) had heard it, he promptly returned.	2 Apenas lo supo Jeroboam, hijo de Nebat, que estaba todavía en Egipto, adonde había ido huyendo del rey Salomón, volvió de Egipto,
3 And they summoned him, and he arrived with all of Israel. And they spoke to Rehoboam, saying:	3 pues habían enviado a llamarle. Vino entonces Jeroboam con todo Israel, y hablaron a Roboam diciendo:
4 “Your father pressed upon us a very difficult yoke. You should govern us more lightly than your father, who imposed on us a heavy servitude, and so lift up some of the burden, so that we may serve you.”	4 «Tu padre ha hecho pesado nuestro yugo; ahora tú aligera la dura servidumbre de tu padre y el pesado yugo que puso sobre nosotros y te serviremos».
5 But he said, “Return to me after three days.” And when the people had gone away,	5 El les dijo: «Volved a mí de aquí a tres días». Y el pueblo se fue.
6 he took counsel with the elders, who had stood before his father Solomon while he was still living, saying, “What counsel would you give to me, so that I may respond to the people?”	6 El rey Roboam pidió consejo a los ancianos que habían servido a su padre Salomón, en vida de éste, diciendo: «¿Qué me aconsejáis que responda a este pueblo?»
7 And they said to him, “If you please this people, and if you soothe them with words of clemency, they will be your servants for all days.”	7 Ellos le respondieron: «Si eres bueno con este pueblo y les sirves y les das buenas palabras, serán siervos tuyos para siempre».
8 But he set aside the counsel of the elders, and he began to have discussion with the youth, who had been raised with him and who were among his companions.	8 Pero él abandonó el consejo que los ancianos le aconsejaron y pidió consejo a los jóvenes que se habían criado con él y estaban a su servicio.
9 And he said to them: “How does it seem to you? Or how should I respond to this people, who have said to me, ‘Lift up the yoke that your father imposed upon us?’ ”	9 Les dijo: «¿Qué me aconsejáis que responda a este pueblo que me ha hablado diciendo: “Aligera el yugo que tu padre puso sobre nosotros?”»
10 But they responded like youths, having been raised with him in luxury, and they said: “So shall you speak to the people, who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy; you should lighten it,’ and so shall you respond to them: ‘My little finger is thicker than the back of my father.	10 Los jóvenes que se habían criado con él le respondieron diciendo: «Esto debes responder al pueblo que te ha dicho: “Tu padre hizo pesado nuestro yugo, ahora tú aligera nuestro yugo”, esto debes responder: “Mi dedo meñique es más grueso que los lomos de mi padre.
11 My father imposed a heavy yoke upon you, and I will place more weight upon it. My father cut you with whips; truly, I will beat you with scorpions.’ ”	11 Un yugo pesado os cargó mi padre, mas yo haré más pesado vuestro yugo; mi padre os ha azotado con azotes, pero yo os azotaré con escorpiones.”»
12 Then Jeroboam, and the entire people, went to Rehoboam on the third day, just as he had instructed them.	12 Volvieron, pues, Jereboam y todo el pueblo al tercer día donde Roboam, según lo que había dicho el rey: «Volved a mí al tercer día»;
13 And the king responded harshly, abandoning the counsel of the elders.	13 y el rey les respondió con dureza, abandonando el consejo de los ancianos,
14 And he spoke according to the will of the youths: “My father imposed a heavy yoke upon you, which I will make heavier. My father cut you with whips; truly, I will beat you with scorpions.”	14 y hablándoles según el consejo de los jóvenes, diciendo: «Mi padre hizo pesado vuestro yugo, yo lo haré más pesado todavía; mi padre os azotó con azotes, pero yo os azotaré con escorpiones».
15 And he did not acquiesce to the pleadings of the people. For it was the will of God that his word be fulfilled, which he had spoken by the hand of Ahijah, the Shilonite, to Jeroboam, the son of Nabat.	15 No escuchó el rey al pueblo, pues se trataba de una intervención de Dios para dar cumplimiento a la palabra que Yahveh había anunciado a Jeroboam, hijo de Nebat, por medio de Ajías de Silo.
16 Then the entire people, speaking more harshly to the king, spoke to him in this way: “There is no portion for us in David, and there is no inheritance in the son of Jesse. Return to your dwellings, O Israel. Then you, O David, shall pasture your own house.” And Israel went away to their dwellings.	16 Viendo todo Israel que el rey no le oía, replicó el pueblo al rey diciendo: «¿Qué parte tenemos nosotros con David? No tenemos herencia en el hijo de Jesé. ¡A tus tiendas, Israel! Mira ahora por tu casa, David». Y todo Israel se fue a sus tiendas.
17 But Rehoboam reigned over the sons of Israel who were living in the cities of Judah.	17 Roboam reinó sobre los israelitas que habitaban en las ciudades de Judá.
18 And king Rehoboam sent Aduram, who was in charge of the tributes. And the sons of Israel stoned him, and he died. And so king Rehoboam hurried to climb into the chariot, and he fled to Jerusalem.	18 El rey Roboam envió a Adoram, jefe de la leva, pero los israelitas le mataron a pedradas y murió. Entonces el rey Roboam se apresuró a subir a su carro para huir a Jerusalén.
19 And Israel withdrew from the house of David, even to this day.	19 Israel está en desobediencia contra la casa de David hasta el día de hoy.
