1 Now Rehoboam set out for Shechem. For in that place all of Israel had convened, so that they might appoint him as king.	1 Roboamo si recò a Sichem, giacché tutto Israele era convenuto a Sichem per proclamarlo re.
2 But when Jeroboam, the son of Nabat, who was in Egypt, (indeed he had fled to that place from Solomon) had heard it, he promptly returned.	2 Appena lo seppe, Geroboamo, figlio di Nebàt, che stava in Egitto dove era fuggito lontano dal re Salomone, fece ritorno dall'Egitto.
3 And they summoned him, and he arrived with all of Israel. And they spoke to Rehoboam, saying:	3 Lo mandarono a chiamare e Geroboamo arrivò con tutto Israele. Allora parlarono a Roboamo in questo modo:
4 “Your father pressed upon us a very difficult yoke. You should govern us more lightly than your father, who imposed on us a heavy servitude, and so lift up some of the burden, so that we may serve you.”	4 "Tuo padre ha reso pesante il nostro giogo; tu ora alleggerisci la dura schiavitù del padre tuo e il giogo pesante che impose sopra di noi e noi ti serviremo".
5 But he said, “Return to me after three days.” And when the people had gone away,	5 Egli rispose loro: "Ritornate da me fra tre giorni". Il popolo se ne andò.
6 he took counsel with the elders, who had stood before his father Solomon while he was still living, saying, “What counsel would you give to me, so that I may respond to the people?”	6 Il re Roboamo si consigliò con gli anziani che erano stati al servizio di Salomone, suo padre, quand'era ancora in vita e domandò: "Come mi consigliate di rispondere a questo popolo?".
7 And they said to him, “If you please this people, and if you soothe them with words of clemency, they will be your servants for all days.”	7 Gli risposero: "Se oggi ti dimostri benevolo verso questo popolo e darai loro soddisfazione rivolgendo loro parole gentili, essi saranno tuoi servi per sempre".
8 But he set aside the counsel of the elders, and he began to have discussion with the youth, who had been raised with him and who were among his companions.	8 Ma egli ripudiò il consiglio che gli anziani gli avevano suggerito e si consigliò con i giovani che erano cresciuti con lui e stavano al suo servizio.
9 And he said to them: “How does it seem to you? Or how should I respond to this people, who have said to me, ‘Lift up the yoke that your father imposed upon us?’ ”	9 Domandò loro: "Che cosa mi consigliate di rispondere a questo popolo che mi ha parlato così: "Alleggerisci il giogo che tuo padre ha imposto sopra di noi"?".
10 But they responded like youths, having been raised with him in luxury, and they said: “So shall you speak to the people, who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy; you should lighten it,’ and so shall you respond to them: ‘My little finger is thicker than the back of my father.	10 I giovani che erano cresciuti con lui gli risposero: "Così dirai al popolo che si è rivolto a te dicendo: "Il padre ha appesantito il nostro giogo, tu alleggeriscilo!". Così dirai loro: "Il mio mignolo è più grosso dei lombi di mio padre.
11 My father imposed a heavy yoke upon you, and I will place more weight upon it. My father cut you with whips; truly, I will beat you with scorpions.’ ”	11 Ora, se mio padre vi ha caricato di un giogo pesante, io lo renderò ancora più pesante. Mio padre vi castigò con le sferze, io lo farò con gli scorpioni!".
12 Then Jeroboam, and the entire people, went to Rehoboam on the third day, just as he had instructed them.	12 Geroboamo e tutto il popolo si presentarono a Roboamo il terzo giorno, come aveva prescritto il re dicendo: "Ritornate da me il terzo giorno".
13 And the king responded harshly, abandoning the counsel of the elders.	13 Il re rispose loro duramente. Ripudiando il consiglio degli anziani, il re Roboamo
14 And he spoke according to the will of the youths: “My father imposed a heavy yoke upon you, which I will make heavier. My father cut you with whips; truly, I will beat you with scorpions.”	14 parlò loro secondo il consiglio dei giovani: "Mio padre ha reso pesante il vostro giogo, io lo aggraverò. Mio padre vi castigò con le sferze, io lo farò con gli scorpioni".
15 And he did not acquiesce to the pleadings of the people. For it was the will of God that his word be fulfilled, which he had spoken by the hand of Ahijah, the Shilonite, to Jeroboam, the son of Nabat.	15 Il re non ascoltò il popolo; ciò avvenne per disposizione divina, affinché il Signore realizzasse la parola rivolta per mezzo di Achia, il silonita, a Geroboamo, figlio di Nebàt.
16 Then the entire people, speaking more harshly to the king, spoke to him in this way: “There is no portion for us in David, and there is no inheritance in the son of Jesse. Return to your dwellings, O Israel. Then you, O David, shall pasture your own house.” And Israel went away to their dwellings.	16 Tutto Israele, dato che il re non prestava loro ascolto, rispose al re: "Quale parte abbiamo noi con Davide? Non abbiamo eredità col figlio di Iesse! Ciascuno alle proprie tende, Israele! Ora, provvedi alla tua casa, o Davide!". Tutto Israele se ne andò alle proprie tende.
17 But Rehoboam reigned over the sons of Israel who were living in the cities of Judah.	17 Roboamo regnò solo sugl'Israeliti che abitavano nelle città di Giuda.
18 And king Rehoboam sent Aduram, who was in charge of the tributes. And the sons of Israel stoned him, and he died. And so king Rehoboam hurried to climb into the chariot, and he fled to Jerusalem.	18 Il re Roboamo mandò Adoram, preposto ai turni di lavoro, ma gl'Israeliti lo lapidarono ed egli morì. Il re Roboamo si affrettò a salire sul carro per fuggire in Gerusalemme.
19 And Israel withdrew from the house of David, even to this day.	19 Così Israele si ribellò contro la casa di Davide fino al giorno d'oggi.
