1 About a month later, Nahash the Ammonite went up and laid siege to Jabesh-gilead. All the men of Jabesh begged Nahash, "Make a treaty with us, and we will be your subjects."	1 Environ un mois plus tard, Nahach l’Ammonite vint établir son camp contre Yabech de Galaad. Tous les gens de Yabech dirent à Nahach: “Fais la paix avec nous et nous te servirons.”
2 But Nahash the Ammonite replied, "This is my condition for a treaty with you: I must gouge out every man's right eye, that I may thus bring ignominy on all Israel."	2 Mais Nahach l’Ammonite répondit: “Voici à quelle condition je ferai la paix avec vous: je vous crèverai à tous l’œil droit, et ce sera une humiliation pour tout Israël.”
3 The elders of Jabesh said to him: "Give us seven days to send messengers throughout the territory of Israel. If no one rescues us, we will surrender to you."	3 Les anciens de Yabech lui dirent: “Laisse-nous un répit de sept jours pour que nous envoyions des messagers dans tout le pays d’Israël. Et si personne ne vient nous délivrer, nous nous rendrons à toi.”
4 When the messengers arrived at Gibeah of Saul, they related the news to the people, all of whom wept aloud.	4 Les messagers arrivèrent à Guibéa de Saül et rapportèrent au peuple toute cette affaire: tout le peuple poussa une grande lamentation et pleura.
5 Just then Saul came in from the field, behind his oxen. "Why are the people weeping?" he asked. The message of the inhabitants of Jabesh was repeated to him.	5 Or c’était le moment où Saül rentrait de la campagne derrière ses bœufs. Il demanda: “Pourquoi le peuple pleure-t-il ainsi?” Et on lui répéta les paroles des gens de Yabech.
6 As he listened to this report, the spirit of God rushed upon him and he became very angry.	6 Quand Saül entendit ces paroles, l’esprit de Dieu fondit sur lui et il se mit en colère.
7 Taking a yoke of oxen, he cut them into pieces, which he sent throughout the territory of Israel by couriers with the message, "If anyone does not come out to follow Saul (and Samuel), the same as this will be done to his oxen!" In dread of the LORD, the people turned out to a man.	7 Il prit une paire de bœufs, il la dépeça et en fit porter les morceaux dans tout le territoire d’Israël par les messagers de Yabech; ils étaient chargés de dire: “Celui qui ne marchera pas à la suite de Saül et à la suite de Samuel, je lui ferai ce que j’ai fait à ces bœufs.” Alors la crainte de Yahvé s’empara de tout le peuple et tous marchèrent comme un seul homme.
8 When he reviewed them in Bezek, there were three hundred thousand Israelites and seventy thousand Judahites.	8 Saül les passa en revue à Bézek, les Israélites étaient 300 000 et les hommes de Juda 30 000.
9 To the messengers who had come he said, "Tell the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead that tomorrow, while the sun is hot, they will be rescued." The messengers came and reported this to the inhabitants of Jabesh, who were jubilant,	9 On donna donc cette réponse aux messagers qui étaient venus: “Voici ce que vous direz aux gens de Yabech de Galaad: Demain, lorsque le soleil commencera à chauffer, vous recevrez du secours.” Les messagers rapportèrent cette nouvelle aux gens de Yabech qui en furent tout heureux.
10 and said to Nahash, "Tomorrow we will surrender to you, and you may do whatever you please with us."	10 Aussitôt ils dirent à Nahach: “Demain nous nous rendrons à toi et tu nous feras tout ce qui te semble bon.”
11 On the appointed day, Saul arranged his troops in three companies and invaded the camp during the dawn watch. They slaughtered Ammonites until the heat of the day; by then the survivors were so scattered that no two were left together.	11 Le lendemain Saül répartit le peuple en trois groupes qui envahirent le camp des Ammonites au petit matin et les combattirent jusqu’au plus chaud du jour. Ceux qui échappèrent se dispersèrent et il n’en resta pas deux ensemble.
12 The people then said to Samuel: "Who questioned whether Saul should rule over us? Hand over the men and we will put them to death."	12 Le peuple dit alors à Samuel: “Qui osait dire: ‘Saül ne régnera pas sur nous?’ Livrez-nous ces hommes pour que nous les mettions à mort.”
13 But Saul broke in to say, "No man is to be put to death this day, for today the LORD has saved Israel."	13 Mais Samuel répondit: “Personne ne sera mis à mort aujourd’hui, car c’est un jour où Yahvé a sauvé Israël.”
14 Samuel said to the people, "Come, let us go to Gilgal to inaugurate the kingdom there."	14 Samuel ajouta: “Venez et rendons-nous à Guilgal: nous allons inaugurer la royauté.”
15 So all the people went to Gilgal, where, in the presence of the LORD, they made Saul king. They also sacrificed peace offerings there before the LORD, and Saul and all the Israelites celebrated the occasion with great joy.	15 Tout le peuple se réunit à Guilgal et Saül y fut proclamé roi devant Yahvé. On offrit à Yahvé des sacrifices de communion, et ce fut une très grande fête pour Saül et tous les Israélites.
