Sirach 40

1 A great anxiety has God allotted, and a heavy yoke, to the sons of men; From the day one leaves his mother's womb to the day he returns to the mother of all the living,	1 Una sorte penosa è disposta per ogni uomo, un giogo pesante grava sui figli di Adamo, dal giorno della loro nascita dal grembo materno al giorno del loro ritorno alla madre comune.
2 His thoughts, the fear in his heart, and his troubled forebodings till the day he dies--	2 Materia alle loro riflessioni e ansietà per il loro cuore offrono il pensiero di ciò che li attende e il giorno della fine.
3 Whether he sits on a lofty throne or grovels in dust and ashes,	3 Da chi siede su un trono glorioso fino al misero che giace sulla terra e sulla cenere;
4 Whether he bears a splendid crown or is wrapped in the coarsest of cloaks--	4 da chi indossa porpora e corona fino a chi è ricoperto di panno grossolano, non c'è che sdegno, invidia, spavento, agitazione, paura della morte, contese e liti.
5 Are of wrath and envy, trouble and dread, terror of death, fury and strife. Even when he lies on his bed to rest, his cares at night disturb his sleep.	5 Durante il riposo nel letto il sogno notturno turba le sue cognizioni.
6 So short is his rest it seems like none, till in his dreams he struggles as he did by day, Terrified by what his mind's eye sees, like a fugitive being pursued;	6 Per un poco, un istante, riposa; quindi nel sonno, come in un giorno di guardia, è sconvolto dai fantasmi del suo cuore, come chi è scampato da una battaglia.
7 As he reaches safety, he wakes up astonished that there was nothing to fear.	7 Mentre sta per mettersi in salvo si sveglia, meravigliandosi dell'irreale timore.
8 So it is with all flesh, with man and with beast, but for sinners seven times more.	8 È sorte di ogni essere vivente, dall'uomo alla bestia, ma per i peccatori sette volte tanto:
9 Plague and bloodshed, wrath and the sword, plunder and ruin, famine and death:	9 morte, sangue, contese, spada, disgrazie, fame, calamità, flagelli.
10 For the wicked, these were created evil, and it is they who bring on destruction.	10 Questi mali sono stati creati per i malvagi, per loro causa si ebbe anche il diluvio.
11 All that is of earth returns to earth, and what is from above returns above.	11 Quanto è dalla terra alla terra ritorna; quanto è dalle acque rifluisce nel mare.
12 All that comes from bribes or injustice will be wiped out, but loyalty remains for ages.	12 Ogni regalo per corrompere e l'ingiustizia spariranno, mentre la lealtà resterà sempre.
13 Wealth out of wickedness is like a wadi in spate: like a mighty stream with lightning and thunder,	13 Le ricchezze degli ingiusti si seccheranno come un torrente, come un grande tuono rimbomba via durante la pioggia.
14 Which, in its rising, rolls along the stones, but suddenly, once and for all, comes to an end.	14 Come l'ingiusto aprendo le mani si rallegrerà, così i trasgressori cadranno in rovina.
15 The offshoot of violence will not flourish, for the root of the godless is on sheer rock;	15 La stirpe degli empi non aumenterà i suoi rami, le radici impure saranno sopra una pietra dura.
16 Or they are like reeds on the riverbank, withered before all other plants;	16 Il giunco su ogni corso d'acqua e sugli argini di un fiume sarà tagliato prima di ogni altra erba.
17 But goodness will never be cut off, and justice endures forever. Wealth or wages can make life sweet, but better than either is finding a treasure.	17 La bontà è come un giardino di benedizioni, la misericordia dura sempre.
18 A child or a city will preserve one's name, but better than either, attaining wisdom.	18 La vita di chi basta a se stesso e del lavoratore sarà dolce, ma più ancora lo sarà per chi trova un tesoro.
19 Sheepfolds and orchards bring flourishing health; but better than either, a devoted wife;	19 I figli e la fondazione di una città assicurano un nome, ma più ancora sarà stimata una donna senza macchia.
20 Wine and music delight the soul, but better than either, conjugal love.	20 Vino e musica rallegrano il cuore, ma più ancora lo rallegra l'amore della sapienza.
21 The flute and the harp offer sweet melody, but better than either, a voice that is true.	21 Il flauto e l'arpa rendono piacevole il canto, ma più ancora di essi una voce soave.
22 Charm and beauty delight the eye, but better than either, the flowers of the field.	22 L'occhio desidera grazia e bellezza, ma più ancora di esse il verde dei campi.
23 A friend, a neighbor, are timely guides, but better than either, a prudent wife.	23 Il compagno e l'amico si incontrano a tempo opportuno, ma più ancora di essi moglie e marito.
24 A brother, a helper, for times of stress; but better than either, charity that rescues.	24 I fratelli e un aiuto servono nell'afflizione, ma più ancora salverà la carità.
25 Gold and silver make one's way secure, but better than either, sound judgment.	25 Oro e argento rendono sicuro il piede, ma ancora di più si apprezza un consiglio.
26 Wealth and vigor build up confidence, but better than either, fear of God. Fear of the LORD leaves nothing wanting; he who has it need seek no other support:	26 Ricchezze e potenza sollevano il cuore, ma più ancora di esse il timore del Signore. Con il timore del Signore non manca nulla; con esso non c'è bisogno di cercare aiuto.
27 The fear of God is a paradise of blessings; its canopy, all that is glorious.	27 Il timore del Signore è come un giardino di benedizioni; la sua protezione vale più di qualsiasi altra gloria.
28 My son, live not the life of a beggar, better to die than to beg;	28 Figlio, non vivere da mendicante. È meglio morire che mendicare.
29 When one has to look to another's table, his life is not really a life. His neighbor's delicacies bring revulsion of spirit to one who understands inward feelings:	29 Un uomo che guarda alla tavola altrui ha una vita che non si può chiamar tale. Si contaminerà con cibi stranieri; l'uomo sapiente ed educato se ne guarderà.
30 In the mouth of the shameless man begging is sweet, but within him it burns like fire.	30 Nella bocca sarà dolce il mendicare per un impudente, ma nel suo ventre brucerà come fuoco.
