Sirach 4

1 My son, rob not the poor man of his livelihood; force not the eyes of the needy to turn away.	1 Figlio, non defraudare al povero l'elemosina e non rivolgere dall'indigente gli occhi tuoi.
2 A hungry man grieve not, a needy man anger not;	2 Non disprezzare colui che ha fame, e non inasprire il povero nella sua indigenza.
3 Do not exasperate the downtrodden; delay not to give to the needy.	3 Non affliggere il cuore del meschino, e non differire il soccorso a chi è nelle angustie.
4 A beggar in distress do not reject; avert not your face from the poor.	4 Non rigettare la preghiera del tribolato, e non rivolgere la faccia dal bisognoso.
5 From the needy turn not your eyes, give no man reason to curse you;	5 Non rivolgere gli occhi tuoi dal mendico per sdegno, non dare occasione di maledirti dietro le spalle a quei che ti pregano.
6 For if in the bitterness of his soul he curse you, his Creator will hear his prayer.	6 Perchè l'imprecazione di chi ti maledice nell'amarezza dell'anima sarà esaudita: l'ascolterà colui che lo creò.
7 Endear yourself to the assembly; before a ruler bow your head.	7 Renditi affabile alla folla dei poveri, umiliati di cuore dinanzi all'anziano, e dinanzi al grande abbassa la testa.
8 Give a hearing to the poor man, and return his greeting with courtesy;	8 Porgi senza annoiarti l'orecchio ai povero, soddisfa il tuo debito, e rispondi a lui con benignità e mansuetudine.
9 Deliver the oppressed from the hand of the oppressor; let not justice be repugnant to you.	9 Libera dalla mano del superbo colui che soffre ingiuria, e non sia ciò gravoso all'anima tua.
10 To the fatherless be as a father, and help their mother as a husband would; Thus will you be like a son to the Most High, and he will be more tender to you than a mother.	10 Nel giudicare sii misericordioso qual padre verso gli orfani, e tieni luogo di marito alla loro madre,
11 Wisdom instructs her children and admonishes those who seek her.	11 e tu sarai come un figlio obbediente dell'Altissimo ed Egli avrà compassione di te più d'una madre.
12 He who loves her loves life; those who seek her out win her favor.	12 La sapienza ispira la vita ai suoi figli, prende sotto la sua protezione quelli che la cercano, e va loro innanzi nella via della giustizia.
13 He who holds her fast inherits glory; wherever he dwells, the LORD bestows blessings.	13 Chi ama lei ama la vita, e chi veglia per lei godrà della sua pace.
14 Those who serve her serve the Holy One; those who love her the LORD loves.	14 Chi la possiede avrà in eredità la vita, e dovunque entrerà vi sarà la benedizio ne di Dio.
15 He who obeys her judges nations; he who hearkens to her dwells in her inmost chambers.	15 Chi la serve obbedirà al Santo, e chi l'ama è amato da Dio.
16 If one trusts her, he will possess her; his descendants too will inherit her.	16 Chi l'ascolta giudicherà le nazioni, e chi in lei tien fisso lo sguardo starà sicuro.
17 She walks with him as a stranger, and at first she puts him to the test; Fear and dread she brings upon him and tries him with her discipline; With her precepts she puts him to the proof, until his heart is fully with her.	17 Se crederà in lei l'avrà in eredità, che sarà confermata ai suoi discendenti;
18 Then she comes back to bring him happiness and reveal her secrets to him.	18 perchè lo accompagna nella prova. Prima di tutto lo sceglie,
19 But if he fails her, she will abandon him and deliver him into the hands of despoilers.	19 poi manderà sopra di lui timori, paure e prove, lo tormenterà colla sferza della sua disciplina, finché non l'abbia provato nei suoi pensieri, e non possa fidarsi di lui.
20 Use your time well; guard yourself from evil, and bring upon yourself no shame.	20 Essa gli darà stabilità, tornerà a lui per diritto cammino e lo renderà contento.
21 There is a sense of shame laden with guilt, and a shame that merits honor and respect.	21 Scoprirà a lui i suoi arcani, metterà in lui tesori di scienza e d'intelligenza della giustizia.
22 Show no favoritism to your own discredit; let no one intimidate you to your own downfall.	22 Ma se egli uscirà di strada, essa l'abbandonerà, e lo lascierà in mano del suo nemico.
23 Refrain not from speaking at the proper time, and hide not away your wisdom;	23 Figlio, bada al tempo e schi va il male.
24 For it is through speech that wisdom becomes known, and knowledge through the tongue's rejoinder.	24 Per l'anima tua non ti vergognare di dire la verità;
25 Never gainsay the truth, and struggle not against the rushing stream.	25 perchè vi è una vergogna che porta al peccato e una vergogna che fa onore e rende graditi.
26 Be not ashamed to acknowledge your guilt, but of your ignorance rather be ashamed.	26 Non usar riguardi colle persone a tuo dànno, e non dire menzogne contro l'anima tua.
27 Do not abase yourself before an impious man, nor refuse to do so before rulers.	27 Non aver riguardi al tuo prossimo nelle sue cadute.
28 Even to the death fight for truth, and the LORD your God will battle for you.	28 Non rattener la parola quando è salutare, non celar la tua sapienza nella sua bellezza;
29 Be not surly in your speech, nor lazy and slack in your deeds.	29 perchè per mezzo della lingua si fa conoscere la sapienza e per mezzo della parola assennata il buon senso, la scienza e la dottrina. Ma il fondamento sta nelle opere di giustizia.
30 Be not a lion at home, nor sly and suspicious at work.	30 Non contraddire in verun modo alla parola di verità, e arrossisci della falsità detta per ignoranza.
31 Let not your hand be open to receive and clenched when it is time to give.	31 Non ti vergognare di confessare i tuoi peccati, e non ti sottomettere ad ogni uomo per il peccato.
	32 Non resistere in faccia al potente, non ti sforzare per opporti all'impeto della corrente.
	33 Ma per la giustizia, per l'anima tua lotta con tutte le tue forze, combatti fino alla morte per la giustizia, e Dio combatterà per te contro i tuoi nemici.
	34 Non essere lesto nel parlare e buono a nulla o negligente nel lavorare.
	35 Non fare il leone in casa tua mettendo a soqquadro la famiglia e opprimendo i tuoi sottoposti.
	36 Non sia la tua mano aperta a prendere e chiusa a dare.
