MODERN HEBREW BIBLE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 אחרי הדברים האלה הלך ישוע בארץ הגליל הלוך ועבור כי לא אבה להתהלך ביהודה על אשר בקשו היהודים להרגו	1 After this Jesus travel ed round Galilee; he could not travel round Judaea, because the Jews wereseeking to kil him.
2 ויקרב חג היהודים הוא חג הסכות	2 As the Jewish feast of Shelters drew near,
3 ויאמרו אליו אחיו קום ולך מזה ארצה יהודה למען יראו גם תלמידיך את המעשים אשר אתה עשה	3 his brothers said to him, 'Leave this place and go to Judaea, so that your disciples, too, can see the works you are doing;
4 כי לא יעשה איש דבר בסתר והוא חפץ להתפרסם לכן אם אתה עשה כאלה הגלה אל העולם	4 no one who wants to be publicly known acts in secret; if this is what you are doing, you should revealyourself to the world.'
5 כי אחיו גם הם לא האמינו בו	5 Not even his brothers had faith in him.
6 ויאמר אליהם ישוע עתי לא באה עד עתה ועתכם תמיד נכונה	6 Jesus answered, 'For me the right time has not come yet, but for you any time is the right time.
7 לא יוכל העולם לשנוא אתכם ואתי ישנא באשר אני מעיד עליו כי רעים מעלליו	7 The world cannot hate you, but it does hate me, because I give evidence that its ways are evil.
8 עלו אתם לחג את החג אני לא אעלה אל החג הזה כי עתי לא מלאה עד עתה	8 Go up to the festival yourselves: I am not going to this festival, because for me the time is not ripe yet.'
9 כזאת דבר וישב בגליל	9 Having said that, he stayed behind in Galilee.
10 ויהי כאשר עלו אחיו לרגל ויעל גם הוא לא בגלוי כי אם כמסתתר	10 However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went up as well, not publicly but secretly.
11 והיהודים בקשהו בחג ויאמרו איה הוא	11 At the festival the Jews were on the look-out for him: 'Where is he?' they said.
12 ותהי תלונה רבה על אדותיו בתוך העם אלה אמרו טוב הוא ואלה אמרו לא כי מתעה הוא את העם	12 There was a great deal of talk about him in the crowds. Some said, 'He is a good man'; others, 'No, heis leading the people astray.'
13 אך אין איש מדבר עליו בגלוי מפני יראת היהודים	13 Yet no one spoke about him openly, for fear of the Jews.
14 ויהי בחצי ימי החג עלה ישוע אל המקדש וילמד	14 When the festival was half over, Jesus went to the Temple and began to teach.
15 ויתמהו היהודים ויאמרו איך ידע זה ספר והוא לא למד	15 The Jews were astonished and said, 'How did he learn to read? He has not been educated.'
16 ויען אתם ישוע ויאמר לקחי לא שלי הוא כי אם לאשר שלחני	16 Jesus answered them: 'My teaching is not from myself: it comes from the one who sent me;
17 האיש החפץ לעשות רצונו ידע לקחי אם מאת אלהים הוא ואם מנפשי אדבר	17 anyone who is prepared to do his wil , wil know whether my teaching is from God or whether I speakon my own account.
18 המדבר מנפשי כבוד עצמו יבקש אבל המבקש כבוד שלחו נאמן הוא ואין עולתה בו	18 When someone speaks on his own account, he is seeking honour for himself; but when he is seekingthe honour of the person who sent him, then he is true and altogether without dishonesty.
19 הלא משה נתן לכם את התורה ואין איש מכם עשה התורה מדוע תבקשו להרגני	19 Did not Moses give you the Law? And yet not one of you keeps the Law!
20 ויען העם ויאמר שד בקרבך מי מבקש להרגך	20 The crowd replied, 'You are mad! Who wants to kil you?'
21 ויען ישוע ויאמר להם פעלה אחת פעלתי וכלכם עליה תתמהו	21 Jesus answered, 'One work I did, and you are all amazed at it.
22 משה נתן לכם המילה אך לא ממשה היא כי אם מן האבות וביום השבת תמולו כל זכר	22 Moses ordered you to practise circumcision -- not that it began with him, it goes back to the patriarchs-- and you circumcise on the Sabbath.
23 ועתה אם ימול זכר בשבת למען אשר לא תופר תורת משה מה תקצפו עלי כי רפאתי איש כלו בשבת	23 Now if someone can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses is not broken, why areyou angry with me for making someone completely healthy on a Sabbath?
24 אל תשפטו למראה עין כי אם משפט צדק שפטו	24 Do not keep judging according to appearances; let your judgement be according to what is right.'
25 ויאמרו אנשים מישבי ירושלים הלא זה הוא אשר בקשו להמיתו	25 Meanwhile some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, 'Isn't this the man they want to kil ?
26 והנה הוא דבר בגלוי ולא יגערו בו האף אמנם ידעו ראשינו כי באמת זה הוא המשיח	26 And here he is, speaking openly, and they have nothing to say to him! Can it be true the authoritieshave recognised that he is the Christ?
27 אך את זה ידענו מאין הוא וכאשר יבוא המשיח לא ידע איש אי מזה הוא	27 Yet we al know where he comes from, but when the Christ appears no one wil know where he comesfrom.'
28 אז קרא ישוע במקדש וילמד לאמר הן ידעתם אתי אף ידעתם מאין אני ומנפשי לא באתי אכן יש אמתי אשר שלחני ואתו לא ידעתם	28 Then, as Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he cried out: You know me and you know where I camefrom. Yet I have not come of my own accord: but he who sent me is true; You do not know him,
29 ואני ידעתיו כי מאתו אני והוא שלחני	29 but I know him because I have my being from him and it was he who sent me.
30 ויבקשו לתפשו ואיש לא שלח בו יד כי לא בא עתו	30 They wanted to arrest him then, but because his hour had not yet come no one laid a hand on him.
31 ורבים מן העם האמינו בו ויאמרו אם יבא המשיח הגם יעשה אתות רבות מאשר עשה זה	31 There were many people in the crowds, however, who believed in him; they were saying, 'When theChrist comes, wil he give more signs than this man has?'
32 והפרושים שמעו את העם מתלחשים עליו כזאת וישלחו הפרושים וראשי הכהנים משרתים לתפשו	32 Hearing that talk like this about him was spreading among the people, the Pharisees sent the Templeguards to arrest him.
33 ויאמר אליהם ישוע אך למצער עודני עמכם והלכתי אל אשר שלחני	33 Then Jesus said: For a short time I am with you stil ; then I shal go back to the one who sent me.
34 תשחרנני ולא תמצאנני ובאשר אני שם אתם לא תוכלו לבוא	34 You will look for me and wil not find me; where I am you cannot come.
35 ויאמרו היהודים איש רעהו אנה ילך זה ואנחנו לא נמצאהו הכי ילך אל הנפוצים בין היונים וילמד אנשי יון	35 So the Jews said to one another, 'Where is he intending to go that we shal not be able to find him? Ishe intending to go abroad to the people who are dispersed among the Greeks and to teach the Greeks?
36 מה זה הדבר אשר אמר תשחרנני ולא תמצאנני ובאשר אני שם אתם לא תוכלו לבוא	36 'Why do you want to kil me?' What does he mean when he says: "You will look for me and wil not findme; where I am, you cannot come?" '
37 ויהי ביום החג האחרון הגדול עמד ישוע ויקרא לאמר איש כי יצמא יבא נא אלי וישתה	37 On the last day, the great day of the festival, Jesus stood and cried out: 'Let anyone who is thirstycome to me!
38 המאמין בי כדבר הכתוב מבטנו ינהרו נהרי מים חיים	38 Let anyone who believes in me come and drink! As scripture says, "From his heart shal flow streamsof living water." '
39 וזאת אמר על הרוח אשר יקחהו המאמינים בו כי לא נתן רוח הקדש עדנה יען אשר ישוע עוד לא נתפאר	39 He was speaking of the Spirit which those who believed in him were to receive; for there was no Spiritas yet because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
40 ורבים מהמון העם כשמעם את הדבר הזה אמרו אכן זה הוא הנביא	40 Some of the crowd who had been listening said, 'He is indeed the prophet,'
41 ויש אשר אמרו זה הוא המשיח ואחרים אמרו המן הגליל יבא המשיח	41 and some said, 'He is the Christ,' but others said, 'Would the Christ come from Galilee?
42 הלא הכתוב אמר כי מזרע דוד ומכפר בית לחם מקום דוד יצא המשיח	42 Does not scripture say that the Christ must be descended from David and come from Bethlehem, thevil age where David was?'
43 ותהי מחלקת בתוך העם על אדותיו	43 So the people could not agree about him.
44 ומקצתם רצו לתפשו ואיש לא שלח בו יד	44 Some wanted to arrest him, but no one actual y laid a hand on him.
45 וישובו המשרתים אל הכהנים הגדולים והפרושים והמה אמרו אליהם מדוע לא הבאתם אתו	45 The guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees who said to them, 'Why haven't you broughthim?'
46 ויענו העבדים מעולם לא דבר איש כאיש הזה	46 The guards replied, 'No one has ever spoken like this man.'
47 ויאמרו אליהם הפרושים הכי נדהתם גם אתם	47 'So,' the Pharisees answered, 'you, too, have been led astray?
48 הגם האמין בו איש מן השרים או מן הפרושים	48 Have any of the authorities come to believe in him? Any of the Pharisees?
49 רק ההמון הזה אשר אינם ידעים את התורה ארורים המה	49 This rabble knows nothing about the Law -- they are damned.'
50 ויאמר אליהם נקדימון אשר בא אליו בלילה והוא היה אחד מהם	50 One of them, Nicodemus -- the same man who had come to Jesus earlier -- said to them,
51 התשפט תורתנו איש בטרם תחקרהו לדעת את אשר עשה	51 'But surely our Law does not al ow us to pass judgement on anyone without first giving him a hearingand discovering what he is doing?'
52 ויענו ויאמרו אליו הגם אתה מן הגליל דרש נא וראה כי לא קם נביא מן הגליל	52 To this they answered, 'Are you a Galilean too? Go into the matter, and see for yourself: prophets donot arise in Galilee.'
53 וילכו איש איש לביתו	53 They al went home,
