1 Stette adunque l’arca del Signore nel paese de' Filistei sette mesi.	1 The ark of Yahweh was in Philistine territory for seven months.
2 E i Filistei convocarono i sacerdoti e gl’indovini, e dissero: Che dobbiam noi fare dell'arca del Signore? Insegnateci il modo di rimandarla al suo luogo. E quelli dissero:	2 The Philistines then cal ed for their priests and diviners and asked, 'What shall we do with the ark ofYahweh? Tel us how to send it back to where it belongs.'
3 Se voi rimandate l'arca del Dio d'Israele, non la rimandate senza nulla, ma rendete a lui quel che dovete per lo peccato, e allora sarete risanati e conoscerete il perchè la mano di lui non cessi di flagellarvi.	3 They replied, 'If you send the ark of the God of Israel away, you must certainly not send it away withouta gift; you must pay him a guilt offering. You wil then recover and wil realise why he continual y oppressed you.'
4 E quelli dissero: Che dobbiam noi rendergli per lo peccato? Essi risposero:	4 They then asked, 'What guilt offering ought we to pay him?' They replied, 'Corresponding to the numberof Philistine chiefs: five golden tumours and five golden rats, since the same plague afflicted your chiefs as therest of you.
5 Farete cinque ani di oro, e cinque topi di oro, secondo il numero delle provincie dei Filistei: perocché una stessa piaga avete sofferta tutti voi, e i vostri satrapi. E voi farete la figura degli ani vostri, e la figura de’ topi, i quali han devastata la terra, e darete gloria al Dio d'Israele: e forse egli ritirerà di sopra voi la sua mano, e di sopra gli dei vostri, e le vostre terre.	5 So make models of your tumours and models of your rats ravaging the territory, and pay honour to theGod of Israel. Then perhaps he wil stop oppressing you, your gods and your country.
6 Per qual ragione v'indurate voi in cuor vostro, come s'indurò l'Egitto, e Faraone in cuor suo? Non è egli vero, che questi dopo che fu flagellato, allora diede libertà a coloro, ed essi se n’andarono?	6 Why should you be as stubborn as Egypt and Pharaoh were? After he had brought disasters on them,did they not let the people leave?
7 Adesso pertanto date di mano all’opera: e fate un carro nuovo, e mettete al carro due vacche che dieno il latte, e che non abbian mai tirato giogo, e chiudete nella stalla le loro rede.	7 Now, then, take and fit out a new cart, and two milch cows that have never borne the yoke. Thenharness the cows to the cart and take their calves back to the byre.
8 E prenderete l'arca del Signore, e la metterete sul carro, e le figure d'oro offerte da voi per lo peccato le metterete in una cassetta accanto ad essa, e poi lasciatela andare.	8 Then take the ark of Yahweh, place it on the cart, and put the golden objects which you are paying himas guilt offering in a box beside it; and then send it off on its own.
9 E starete osservando: e se prenderà la strada che mena al suo paese, e andrà verso Bethsames, egli è che ha fatto a noi male sì grande: se no, la cosa sarà altrimenti, e noi conosceremo che non la sua mano ci ha percossi, ma è stato un accidente.	9 Watch it; if it goes up the road to its own territory, towards Beth-Shemesh, then he was responsible forthis great harm to us; but if not, we shal know that it was not his hand that struck us, and that this has happenedto us by chance.'
10 Quelli adunque fecero in tal guisa: e prese due vacche, che allattavano i loro vitelli, le misero al carro, e chiusero nella stalla i vitelli.	10 The people did this. They took two milch cows and harnessed them to the cart, shutting their calves inthe byre.
11 E misero l’arca di Dio sul carro, e la cassetta contenente i topi d'oro, e le figure degli ani.	11 They then put the ark of Yahweh on the cart, with the box and the golden rats and the models of theirtumours.
12 Or le vacche andavano dirittamente per la strada che conduce a Bethsames, e seguivano lo stesso cammino, andando avanti, e muggendo; e non piegavano nè a destra, nè a sinistra; e i satrapi dei Filistei eglino pure andavano lor dietro sino a' confini di Bethsames.	12 The cows made straight for Beth-Shemesh, keeping to the one road, lowing as they went and turningneither to right nor to left. The Philistine chiefs followed them as far as the boundaries of Beth-Shemesh.
13 Or i Bethsamiti mietevano il grano nella valle, e alzando gli occhi videro l'arca, ed ebbero gran consolazione in vederla.	13 The people of Beth-Shemesh were reaping the wheat harvest in the plain when they looked up andsaw the ark and went joyful y to meet it.
14 E il carro andò nel campo di Giosuè di Bethsames, e ivi si fermò. E ivi era una gran pietra; e (i Bethsamiti) spezzarono il carro, e sopra il legname di esso misero le vacche in olocausto al Signore.	14 When the cart came to the field of Joshua of Beth-Shemesh, it stopped. There was a large stonethere, and they cut up the wood of the cart and offered the cows as a burnt offering to Yahweh.
15 E i Leviti deposero l’arca di Dio, e la cassetta che erale accanto, nella quale erano le figure d'oro, e la collocarono sopra quella gran pietra. E quelli di Bethsames offerirono quel dì degli olocausti, e immolarono vittime al Signore.	15 The Levites had taken down the ark of Yahweh and the box with it containing the golden objects andput these on the large stone. That day the people of Beth-Shemesh presented burnt offerings and madesacrifices to Yahweh.
16 E i cinque satrapi dei Filistei videro, e tornaron lo stesso dì ad Accaron.	16 The five chiefs of the Philistines, having witnessed this, went back to Ekron the same day.
17 Or questi sono gli ani d'oro offerti da’ Filistei al Signore per lo peccato; uno per Azoto, uno per Gaza, uno per Ascalon, uno per Geth, uno per Accaron.	17 The golden tumours paid by the Philistines as a guilt offering to Yahweh were as fol ows: one forAshdod, one for Gaza, one for Ashkelon, one for Gath, one for Ekron;
18 E tanti topi d'oro quante erano le città delle cinque provincie de' Filistei, cominciando dalle città murate sino a' borghi senza muro, e sino ad Abelgrande, sulla quale posarono l’arca del Signore, la quale era in quel giorno nel campo di Giosuè Bethsamita.	18 and golden rats to the number of al the Philistine towns, those of the five chiefs, from fortified townsdown to open villages: stil to this day the large stone in the field of Joshua of Beth-Shemesh, on which they putthe ark of Yahweh, is a witness.
19 Ma (il Signore) punì gli uomini di Bethsames, perchè aveano guardato l'arca del Signore: e mise a morte settanta uomini del popolo, e cinquanta mila della plebe. E il popolo pianse per avere il Signore percosso la plebe con gran flagello.	19 Of the people of Beth-Shemesh the sons of Jeconiah had not rejoiced when they saw the ark ofYahweh, and Yahweh struck down seventy of them. The people mourned because Yahweh had struck them sofiercely.
20 E gli uomini di Bethsames dissero: Chi potrà stare al cospetto del Signore, di questo Dio santo? E presso di chi andrà egli partendo da noi?	20 The people of Beth-Shemesh then said, 'Who can stand his ground before Yahweh, this holy God? Towhom shal he go, so that we are rid of him?'
21 E spediron messi agli abitanti di Cariath-iarim, che dicesser loro: I Filistei han ricondotta l’arca del Signore: venite, e riportatela nel vostro paese.	21 So they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kiriath-Jearim, to say, 'The Philistines have sent backthe ark of Yahweh; come down and take it up to your town.'
