| 1 Dio volesse, che sopportaste per un pocolino la mia stoltezza, ma pur sopportatemi: | 1 I wish you would bear with me in a little foolishness. Do bear with me! |
| 2 Imperocché io son geloso di voi per izelo di Dio. Dappoiché vi ho sposati per presentarvi, qual pura vergine, a un solo uomo, a Cristo. | 2 I feel a divine jealousy for you, for I betrothed you to Christ to present you as a pure bride to her one husband. |
| 3 Ma io temo, che, siccome il serpente con la sua scaltrezza sedusse Eva, così non siano corrotti i vostri sensi, e decadano dalla semplicità, che è in Cristo. | 3 But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ. |
| 4 Imperocché se chi viene, predica un altro Cristo non predicato da noi; o te un altro Spirito ricevete, cui non avete ricevuto; o altro vangelo, che non avete abbracciato: a ragione lo sopportereste. | 4 For if some one comes and preaches another Jesus than the one we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you submit to it readily enough. |
| 5 Io però mi penso di nulla aver fatto di meno de' grandi Apostoli. | 5 I think that I am not in the least inferior to these superlative apostles. |
| 6 Imperocché quantunque rozzo nel parlare, nol son però nella scienza: ma siamo interamente conosciuti da voi. | 6 Even if I am unskilled in speaking, I am not in knowledge; in every way we have made this plain to you in all things. |
| 7 Peccai forse, quando umiliai me stesso per esaltare voi? Quando vi annunziai il vangelo di Dio gratuitamente? | 7 Did I commit a sin in abasing myself so that you might be exalted, because I preached God's gospel without cost to you? |
| 8 Spogliai altre Chiese, tirandone lo stipendio per servire a voi. | 8 I robbed other churches by accepting support from them in order to serve you. |
| 9 E stando presso di voi, ed essendo in bisogno, non fui di aggravio a nissuno: imperocché a quello, che mi mancava, supplirono i fratelli venuti dalla Macedonia: e onninamente non vi ho recato aggravio, nè vel recherò. | 9 And when I was with you and was in want, I did not burden any one, for my needs were supplied by the brethren who came from Macedonia. So I refrained and will refrain from burdening you in any way. |
| 10 La verità di Cristo è in me, come non mi sarà chiusa la bocca su questo vanto ne' paesi dell'Acaia. | 10 As the truth of Christ is in me, this boast of mine shall not be silenced in the regions of Achaia. |
| 11 E per qual motivo? Perché non vi amo? Sasselo Dio. | 11 And why? Because I do not love you? God knows I do! |
| 12 Ma quello, che io fo, lo farò tuttora, per troncar l'occasione a quegli, i quali un'occasione desiderano di essere (della qual cosa si gloriano) trovati simili a noi. | 12 And what I do I will continue to do, in order to undermine the claim of those who would like to claim that in their boasted mission they work on the same terms as we do. |
| 13 Imperocché questi tali falsi Apostoli sono operai finti, che si trasfigurano in Apostoli di Cristo. | 13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. |
| 14 Né ciò è da ammirarsi: mentre anche satana si trasforma in angelo della luce: | 14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. |
| 15 Non è adunque gran cosa, che anche i ministri di lui si trasfigurino in ministri della giustizia: la fine de' quali sarà conforme alle opere loro. | 15 So it is not strange if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds. |
| 16 Vel dico di nuovo (nissuno mi creda stolto, che se no, prendetemi anche per istolto, affinchè mi glorii anch'io un tantino) | 16 I repeat, let no one think me foolish; but even if you do, accept me as a fool, so that I too may boast a little. |
| 17 Quello, che dico, non lo dico secondo Dio, ma come per istoltezza, in questa materia di vantamento. | 17 (What I am saying I say not with the Lord's authority but as a fool, in this boastful confidence; |
| 18 Dappoiché molti si gloriano secondo la carne: io pare mi glorierò. | 18 since many boast of worldly things, I too will boast.) |
| 19 Conciossiachè volentieri tollerate voi gli stolti, essendo voi saggi. | 19 For you gladly bear with fools, being wise yourselves! |
| 20 Imperocché sopportate chi vi pone in ischiavitù, chi vi divora, chi vi roba, chi fa il grande, chi vi percuote nella faccia. | 20 For you bear it if a man makes slaves of you, or preys upon you, or takes advantage of you, or puts on airs, or strikes you in the face. |
| 21 Dico ciò quanto al disonore, quasi noi siamo stati da poco per questo lato. Ma per qualsivoglia cosa, che alcuno prenda ardimento (parlo da stolto) lo prendo ancor io: | 21 To my shame, I must say, we were too weak for that! But whatever any one dares to boast of--I am speaking as a fool--I also dare to boast of that. |
| 22 Sono Ebrei, ancor io: sono Israeliti, ancor io: discendenti d'Abramo, ancor io: | 22 Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they descendants of Abraham? So am I. |
| 23 Son ministri di Cristo, (parlo di stolto) più io: da più ne' travagli, da più nelle prigionie, oltre modo nelle battiture, frequentemente in mezzo alle morti. | 23 Are they servants of Christ? I am a better one--I am talking like a madman--with far greater labors, far more imprisonments, with countless beatings, and often near death. |
| 24 Da' Giudei cinque volte ricevei quaranta colpi, meno uno. | 24 Five times I have received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one. |
| 25 Tre volte fui battuto con le verghe, una volta fui lapidato, tre volte naufragai, una notte, e un giorno stetti nel profondo mare, | 25 Three times I have been beaten with rods; once I was stoned. Three times I have been shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been adrift at sea; |
| 26 Spesso in viaggi, tra' pericoli delle fiumane, pericoli degli assassini, pericoli da' miei nazionali, pericoli da'gentili, pericoli nelle città, pericoli nella solitudine, pericoli nel mare, pericoli da' falsi fratelli: | 26 on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brethren; |
| 27 Nella fatica, e nella miseria, nelle molte vigilie, nella fame, e nella sete, nei molti digiuni, nel freddo, e nella nudità: | 27 in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure. |
| 28 Oltre a quello, che viene di fuora, le quotidiane cure, che mi vengono sopra, la sollecitudine di tutte le Chiese. | 28 And, apart from other things, there is the daily pressure upon me of my anxiety for all the churches. |
| 29 Chi è infermo, che non sia io infermo? Chi è scandalizzato, che io non arda? | 29 Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to fall, and I am not indignant? |
| 30 Se fa di mestieri di gloriarsi, di quelle cose mi glorierò, che riguarda la mia debolezza. | 30 If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness. |
| 31 Iddio, Padre del Signor nostro Gesù Cristo, che è benedetto ne' secoli, sa, che io non mentisco. | 31 The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, he who is blessed for ever, knows that I do not lie. |
| 32 In Damasco colui, che governava la nazione a nome del Re Areta, aveva poste guardie intorno alla città di Damasco per catturarmi: | 32 At Damascus, the governor under King Aretas guarded the city of Damascus in order to seize me, |
| 33 E per una finestra fui calato in una sporta dalla muraglia, e cosi gli fuggii di mano. | 33 but I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall, and escaped his hands. |
