1 Allora i giusti con gran costanza staran davanti a quelli, i quali li vessarono, e i quali depredarono le loro fatiche.	1 Then shall the just one with great assurance confront his oppressors who set at nought his labors.
2 E quegli a tal vista saranno agitati da orrenda paura, e della inaspettata repentina salvezza di quelli resteranno stupefatti.	2 Seeing this, they shall be shaken with dreadful fear, and amazed at the unlooked-for salvation.
3 E tocchi da pentimento, e sospirando affannosamente diranno dentro di se: Questi sono coloro, i quali noi una volta riguardammo come oggetto di derisione, ed esempio di obbrobrio.	3 They shall say among themselves, rueful and groaning through anguish of spirit: "This is he whom once we held as a laughingstock and as a type for mockery,
4 Noi insensati la vita loro tenemmo per una insensataggine, e come disonorato il lor fine:	4 fools that we were! His life we accounted madness, and his death dishonored.
5 Ecco com'eglino sono contati tra' figliuoli di Dio, ed hanno parte co' santi.	5 See how he is accounted among the sons of God; how his lot is with the saints!
6 Dunque noi smarrimmo la via di verità, e non rifulse per noi la luce della giustizia, e non si levò per noi il sole di intelligenza.	6 We, then, have strayed from the way of truth, and the light of justice did not shine for us, and the sun did not rise for us.
7 Ci stancammo nella via di iniquità, e di perdizione, battemmo strade disastrose, e non conoscemmo la via del Signore.	7 We had our fill of the ways of mischief and of ruin; we journeyed through impassable deserts, but the way of the LORD we knew not.
8 Che giovò a noi la superbia? E la ostentazione delle ricchezze qual prò fece a noi?	8 What did our pride avail us? What have wealth and its boastfulness afforded us?
9 Tutte quelle cose si dileguaron con ombra, e come una passeggera novella.	9 All of them passed like a shadow and like a fleeting rumor;
10 O come una nave valica le onde agitate, della quale vestigio non può trovarsi quand' ella è passata, né solco aperto dalla sua carena nei flutti:	10 Like a ship traversing the heaving water, of which, when it has passed, no trace can be found, no path of its keel in the waves.
11 O come uccello, che svolazza per l'aria, il quale verun segno non lascia de' suoi movimenti, ma solo lo scuotimento delle ale, colle quali batte l'aere leggero, e rompe con forza l'ambiente, per cui fa strada: egli dibatte l'ale, e sen vola, e dietro a se non lascia segno del suo viaggio,	11 Or like a bird flying through the air; no evidence of its course is to be found- But the fluid air, lashed by the beat of pinions, and cleft by the rushing force Of speeding wings, is traversed: and afterward no mark of passage can be found in it.
12 O come scagliata, che è al destinato luogo la freccia subitamente in se stesso rientra l'aere diviso, onde passaggio di lei non conoscesi.	12 Or as, when an arrow has been shot at a mark, the parted air straightway flows together again so that none discerns the way it went through-
13 Così noi nati, che fummo, tosto cessammo di essere, e nessun segno di virtù potemmo mostrare; e ci consumammo nella nostra malvagità.	13 Even so we, once born, abruptly came to nought and held no sign of virtue to display, but were consumed in our wickedness."
14 Così nell'inferno ragionano quei, che peccarono.	14 Yes, the hope of the wicked is like thistledown borne on the wind, and like fine, tempest-driven foam; Like smoke scattered by the wind, and like the passing memory of the nomad camping for a single day.
15 Imperocché la speranza dell'empio è come un bioccol di lana, che è straportato dal vento, e come la lieve spuma, che è dissipata dalla tempesta, e come la memoria di un forestiero, che passa, nè si ferma, che un giorno.	15 But the just live forever, and in the LORD is their recompense, and the thought of them is with the Most High.
16 Ma i giusti vireranno in etemo, e la loro ricompensa è nelle mani del Signore, e di essi ha cura l'Altissimo.	16 Therefore shall they receive the splendid crown, the beauteous diadem, from the hand of the LORD- For he shall shelter them with his right hand, and protect them with his arm.
17 Quindi essi otterranno un regno illustre, e un bel diadema dalla mano del Signore; perocché ei li coprirà colla sua destra, e col suo braccio santo li difenderà.	17 He shall take his zeal for armor and he shall arm creation to requite the enemy;
18 Il suo zelo imbraccerà le armi, e armerà le creature per far vendetta dei nemici.	18 He shall don justice for a breastplate and shall wear sure judgment for a helmet;
19 Si rivestirà di giustizia in luogo di corazza, e in vece di cimiero prenderà l'infallibile giudizio.	19 He shall take invincible rectitude as a shield
20 Darà di mano allo scudo insupera bile, che è l'equità.	20 and whet his sudden anger for a sword, And the universe shall war with him against the foolhardy.
21 Dell'ira inflessibile si farà (Dio) acuta lancia, e con lui combatterà l'universo contro gli insensati.	21 Well-aimed shafts of lightnings shall go forth and from the clouds as from a well-drawn bow shall leap to the mark;
22 Partiranno per retta via le scagliate folgora, e dalle nubi, come da ben curvato arco scoccate al destinato luogo sen voleranno.	22 and as from his sling, wrathful hailstones shall be hurled. The water of the sea shall be enraged against them and the streams shall abruptly overflow;
23 E dense grandini pioverà l'ira (di Dio) a guisa di macchina, che getti pietre, e contro di loro ribolliranno le acque del mare, e i fiumi inonderanno con violenza.	23 A mighty wind shall confront them and a tempest winnow them out; Thus lawlessness shall lay the whole earth waste and evildoing overturn the thrones of potentates.
24 Contro di essi si leverà un vento possente, e li getterà per aria come un turbine, e la loro iniquità ridurrà un diserto tutta la terra, e i troni de' potentati dalla malvagità saranno abbattuti.
