1 And they walked in the midst of the fire, praising God, and blessing the Lord.	1 Es wohnte ein Mann in Babylon namens Jojakim.
2 Then Azarias stood up, and prayed on this manner; and opening his mouth in the midst of the fire said,	2 Er hatte eine Frau namens Susanna geheiratet, die Tochter Hilkias, die sehr schön war und den Herrn fürchtete;
3 Blessed art thou, O Lord God of our fathers: thy name is worthy to be praised and glorified for evermore:	3 auch ihre Eltern waren rechtschaffen und hatten ihre Tochter unterwiesen nach dem Gesetz Mose’s.
4 For thou art righteous in all the things that thou hast done to us: yea, true are all thy works, thy ways are right, and all thy judgments truth.	4 Jojakim war aber sehr reich, und ihm gehörte ein Lustgarten (= Park), der an sein Haus anstieß; und bei ihm kamen die Juden zusammen, weil er angesehener war als sie alle.
5 In all the things that thou hast brought upon us, and upon the holy city of our fathers, even Jerusalem, thou hast executed true judgment: for according to truth and judgment didst thou bring all these things upon us because of our sins.	5 Und es wurden zwei Älteste aus dem Volk als Richter gewählt in jenem Jahre – von denen der Herr gesagt hat: »Gesetzlosigkeit ist von Babylon ausgegangen von seinen Ältesten (und) Richtern, die das Volk (wohl) zu regieren schienen« –:
6 For we have sinned and committed iniquity, departing from thee.	6 die gingen aus und ein in Jojakims Hause, und es kamen zu ihnen alle, die einen Rechtshandel hatten.
7 In all things have we trespassed, and not obeyed thy commandments, nor kept them, neither done as thou hast commanded us, that it might go well with us.	7 Wenn dann das Volk um Mittag sich verlaufen hatte, ging Susanna hin und erging sich im Lustgarten ihres Mannes.
8 Wherefore all that thou hast brought upon us, and every thing that thou hast done to us, thou hast done in true judgment.	8 Da nun die beiden Ältesten sie täglich hingehen und lustwandeln sahen, entbrannten sie in Begierde nach ihr;
9 And thou didst deliver us into the hands of lawless enemies, most hateful forsakers of God, and to an unjust king, and the most wicked in all the world.	9 sie verkehrten ihren Sinn und lenkten ihre Augen ab, so daß sie nicht zum Himmel emporsahen und der gerechten Gerichte (Gottes) nicht gedachten.
10 And now we cannot open our mouths, we are become a shame and reproach to thy servants; and to them that worship thee.	10 Sie waren beide von Liebe zu ihr entbrannt, doch keiner teilte dem andern sein Liebesweh mit,
11 Yet deliver us not up wholly, for thy name's sake, neither disannul thou thy covenant:	11 denn sie schämten sich, von ihrer Begierde, mit ihr zusammen zu sein, Mitteilung zu machen;
12 And cause not thy mercy to depart from us, for thy beloved Abraham's sake, for thy servant Issac's sake, and for thy holy Israel's sake;	12 doch waren sie Tag für Tag eifrig bemüht, sie zu Gesicht zu bekommen.
13 To whom thou hast spoken and promised, that thou wouldest multiply their seed as the stars of heaven, and as the sand that lieth upon the seashore.	13 Da sagte (eines Tags) einer zum andern: »Laß uns nach Hause gehen, denn es ist Essens Zeit«. So trennten sie sich also beim Hinausgehen voneinander,
14 For we, O Lord, are become less than any nation, and be kept under this day in all the world because of our sins.	14 kehrten dann aber um und trafen an derselben Stelle wieder zusammen. Und da sie sich gegenseitig ausfragten, gestanden sie als Ursache ihre Begierde (nach ihr) ein. Hierauf setzten sie gemeinsam eine Zeit fest, wo sie sie allein treffen könnten.
15 Neither is there at this time prince, or prophet, or leader, or burnt offering, or sacrifice, or oblation, or incense, or place to sacrifice before thee, and to find mercy.	15 Wie sie nun so einen günstigen Tag abpaßten, begab es sich, daß sie nach ihrer Gewohnheit in den Garten ging, nur mit zwei Mädchen, und sich dort zu baden wünschte, weil es sehr heiß war;
16 Nevertheless in a contrite heart and an humble spirit let us be accepted.	16 und es war dort niemand zugegen außer den beiden Ältesten, die sich versteckt hatten, um sie zu belauern.
17 Like as in the burnt offerings of rams and bullocks, and like as in ten thousands of fat lambs: so let our sacrifice be in thy sight this day, and grant that we may wholly go after thee: for they shall not be confounded that put their trust in thee.	17 Sie sagte dann zu den Mädchen: »Holt mir Öl und Salben und schließt die Türen des Gartens, damit ich mich baden kann«.
18 And now we follow thee with all our heart, we fear thee, and seek thy face.	18 Sie taten nach ihrem Geheiß, verschlossen die Gartentüren und gingen durch die Hintertür hinaus, um das Verlangte zu holen; sie sahen aber die Ältesten nicht, denn die hielten sich versteckt.
19 Put us not to shame: but deal with us after thy lovingkindness, and according to the multitude of thy mercies.	19 Als nun die Mädchen hinausgegangen waren, erhoben sich die beiden Ältesten, liefen auf sie zu und sagten:
20 Deliver us also according to thy marvellous works, and give glory to thy name, O Lord: and let all them that do thy servants hurt be ashamed;	20 »Siehe, die Türen des Gartens sind verschlossen und niemand sieht uns; wir sind in Liebe zu dir entbrannt; darum sei uns zu Willen und gib dich uns hin.
21 And let them be confounded in all their power and might, and let their strength be broken;	21 Wo nicht, so werden wir gegen dich bezeugen, daß ein junger Mann mit dir zusammen gewesen sei und du deshalb die Mädchen weggeschickt habest«.
22 And let them know that thou art God, the only God, and glorious over the whole world.	22 Da seufzte Susanna und sagte: »Bedrängnis umgibt mich von allen Seiten! denn wenn ich das tue, steht der Tod mir bevor; und tue ich’s nicht, so werde ich euren Händen nicht entgehen;
23 And the king's servants, that put them in, ceased not to make the oven hot with rosin, pitch, tow, and small wood;	23 aber besser ist es doch für mich, es nicht zu tun und in eure Hände zu fallen, als vor dem Herrn zu sündigen«.
24 So that the flame streamed forth above the furnace forty and nine cubits.	24 Hierauf schrie Susanna mit lauter Stimme, aber auch die beiden Ältesten schrieen wider sie;
25 And it passed through, and burned those Chaldeans it found about the furnace.	25 und einer von ihnen lief hin und öffnete die Tür des Gartens.
26 But the angel of the Lord came down into the oven together with Azarias and his fellows, and smote the flame of the fire out of the oven;	26 Als nun die Leute im Hause das Geschrei im Garten vernahmen, eilten sie durch die Hintertür hinein, um zu sehen, was ihr widerfahren sei.
27 And made the midst of the furnace as it had been a moist whistling wind, so that the fire touched them not at all, neither hurt nor troubled them.	27 Als aber die Ältesten ihre Aussage gemacht hatten, wurden die Diener sehr beschämt; denn noch niemals war so etwas der Susanna nachgesagt worden.
28 Then the three, as out of one mouth, praised, glorified, and blessed, God in the furnace, saying,	28 Als nun am andern Tage das Volk bei ihrem Manne Jojakim zusammenkam, stellten sich auch die beiden Ältesten ein, erfüllt mit dem ruchlosen Gedanken wider Susanna, sie ums Leben zu bringen.
29 Blessed art thou, O Lord God of our fathers: and to be praised and exalted above all for ever.	29 Sie sagten also vor dem Volke: »Laßt Susanna, Hilkias Tochter, die Frau Jojakims, herkommen!« Man holte sie herbei,
30 And blessed is thy glorious and holy name: and to be praised and exalted above all for ever.	30 und sie kam mit ihren Eltern, ihren Kindern und allen ihren Verwandten;
31 Blessed art thou in the temple of thine holy glory: and to be praised and glorified above all for ever.	31 Susanna aber war sehr üppigen Wuchses und schön von Angesicht.
32 Blessed art thou that beholdest the depths, and sittest upon the cherubims: and to be praised and exalted above all for ever.	32 Da befahlen die ruchlosen Männer, man solle ihr den Schleier abnehmen – denn sie war verschleiert –, damit sie sich an ihrer Schönheit weiden könnten.
33 Blessed art thou on the glorious throne of thy kingdom: and to be praised and glorified above all for ever.	33 Ihre Angehörigen aber weinten und alle, die sie sahen.
34 Blessed art thou in the firmament of heaven: and above ail to be praised and glorified for ever.	34 Es erhoben sich aber die beiden Ältesten inmitten des Volkes und legten ihre Hände auf ihr Haupt;
35 O all ye works of the Lord, bless ye the Lord : praise and exalt him above all for ever,	35 sie aber schaute weinend zum Himmel empor, denn ihr Herz vertraute auf den Herrn.
36 O ye heavens, bless ye the Lord : praise and exalt him above all for ever.	36 Die Ältesten sagten sodann aus: »Während wir allein im Garten umhergingen, kam diese herein mit zwei Mädchen; sie ließ die Gartentüren schließen und schickte die Mädchen fort.
37 O ye angels of the Lord, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.	37 Da kam zu ihr ein junger Mann, der versteckt gewesen war, und legte sich zu ihr.
38 O all ye waters that be above the heaven, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.	38 Wir aber, die wir uns in einem Winkel des Gartens befanden, liefen beim Anblick dieser Schandtat auf die beiden zu;
39 O all ye powers of the Lord, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.	39 und nachdem wir ihr Zusammensein gesehen, konnten wir zwar jenes Menschen, weil er stärker als wir war und die Tür öffnete und hinaussprang, nicht habhaft werden;
40 O ye sun and moon, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.	40 diese aber ergriffen wir und fragten sie, wer der junge Mann wäre; doch sie wollte es uns nicht sagen. Solches bezeugen wir!«
41 O ye stars of heaven, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.	41 Und die Versammlung schenkte ihnen, als Ältesten des Volkes und als Richtern Glauben, und man verurteilte sie zum Tode.
42 O every shower and dew, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.	42 Susanna aber brach in laute Wehklage aus und sagte: »O ewiger Gott, der du das Verborgene kennst und alles weißt, bevor es geschieht:
43 O all ye winds, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever,	43 du weißt, daß sie falsches Zeugnis wider mich abgelegt haben; und nun muß ich sterben, ohne irgend etwas von dem getan zu haben, dessen jene mich böslich beschuldigen!«
44 O ye fire and heat, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.	44 Und der Herr erhörte ihr Rufen.
45 O ye winter and summer, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.	45 Denn als sie zur Hinrichtung abgeführt wurde, erweckte Gott den heiligen Geist eines ganz jungen Mannes namens Daniel;
46 0 ye dews and storms of snow, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.	46 der rief mit lauter Stimme aus: »Ich bin unschuldig an dem Blute dieser Frau!«
47 O ye nights and days, bless ye the Lord: bless and exalt him above all for ever.	47 Alles Volk wandte sich ihm zu und man fragte: »Was willst du mit diesem deinem Ausruf besagen?«
48 O ye light and darkness, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.	48 Er aber trat mitten unter sie und sagte: »Sind denn die Kinder Israel solche Toren? Ohne Untersuchung und ohne Gewißheit erlangt zu haben, verurteilt ihr eine Tochter Israels?
49 O ye ice and cold, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.	49 Kehrt ins Gerichtshaus zurück, denn diese haben falsches Zeugnis wider sie abgelegt!«
50 O ye frost and snow, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.	50 Da kehrte das ganze Volk eilig wieder um. Und die Ältesten sagten zu ihm: »Komm her, setze dich in unsre Mitte und berichte uns! Denn Gott selbst hat dir das Vorrecht des Alters verliehen!
51 O ye lightnings and clouds, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.	51 Daniel aber sagte zu ihnen: »Trennt sie weit voneinander, dann will ich sie verhören«.
52 O let the earth bless the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.	52 Nachdem sie nun voneinander getrennt waren, rief er den einen von ihnen und sagte zu ihm: »Du in einem gottlosen Leben Ergrauter! jetzt kommen deine vormals begangenen Sünden über dich,
53 O ye mountains and little hills, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.	53 da du ungerecht gerichtet, Unschuldige verurteilt und Schuldige freigesprochen hast, während doch Gott gebietet: ›Den Schuldlosen und Gerechten sollst du nicht umbringen!‹
54 O all ye things that grow in the earth, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.	54 Nun denn, wenn du diese Frau wirklich gesehen hast, so sage doch: Unter was für einem Baume hast du sie beieinander gesehen?« Er antwortete: »Unter einem Mastixbaum«.
55 O ye mountains, bless ye the Lord: Praise and exalt him above all for ever.	55 Daniel erwiderte ihm: »Richtig gelogen hast du wider dein eigenes Haupt; denn bereits hat der Engel Gottes Befehl von Gott erhalten und wird dich mitten durch zerhauen!«
56 O ye seas and rivers, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.	56 Nachdem er dann diesen hatte wegbringen lassen, hieß er den andern herbeiführen und sagte zu ihm: »Du Kanaaniter und Nichtjude! Die Schönheit hat dich betört, und die Sinnenlust hat dein Herz verkehrt.
57 O ye whales, and all that move in the waters, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.	57 So habt ihr’s überhaupt mit den Töchtern Israels gemacht, und sie sind euch aus Furcht zu Willen gewesen; aber eine Tochter Juda’s hat sich eurer Ruchlosigkeit nicht gefügt.
58 O all ye fowls of the air, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.	58 So sage mir nun: Unter was für einem Baume hast du sie beieinander gesehen?« Er antwortete: »Unter einer Eiche«.
59 O all ye beasts and cattle, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.	59 Daniel sagte zu ihm: »Geradeswegs hast auch du wider dein eigenes Haupt gelogen; denn es steht schon der Engel Gottes bereit, mit dem Schwerte dich mittendurch zu zerhauen, damit er euch ausrotte!«
60 O ye children of men, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.	60 Da brach die ganze Versammlung in laute Rufe aus und pries Gott, der die auf ihn Hoffenden rettet.
61 O Israel, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.	61 Und sie erhoben sich wider die zwei Ältesten, weil Daniel sie nach ihren eigenen Aussagen als falsche Zeugen erwiesen hatte;
62 O ye priests of the Lord, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.	62 und man verfuhr mit ihnen, wie sie dem Nächsten zu tun gedacht hatten, nach dem Gesetz Mose’s und tötete sie. So wurde unschuldiges Blut an jenem Tage gerettet.
63 O ye servants of the Lord, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.	63 Hilkia aber und sein Weib priesen Gott wegen ihrer Tochter, samt Jojakim, ihrem Manne, und allen ihren Verwandten, weil nichts Schandbares an ihr gefunden worden war.
64 O ye spirits and souls of the righteous, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.	64 Daniel aber stand in hohem Ansehen bei dem Volke von jenem Tage an und fernerhin.
65 O ye holy and humble men of heart, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.
66 O Ananias, Azarias, and Misael, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever: far he hath delivered us from hell, and saved us from the hand of death, and delivered us out of the midst of the furnace and burning flame: even out of the midst of the fire hath he delivered us.
67 O give thanks unto the Lord, because he is gracious: for his mercy endureth for ever.
68 O all ye that worship the Lord, bless the God of gods, praise him, and give him thanks: for his mercy endureth for ever.
