KING JAMES BIBLELe Sainte Bible Vigouroux
And they walked in the midst of the fire, praising God, and blessing the Lord.1 La troisième année du règne de Joakim, roi de Juda, Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, vint contre Jérusalem et l'assiégea.
Then Azarias stood up, and prayed on this manner; and opening his mouth in the midst of the fire said,2 Et le Seigneur livra entre ses mains Joakim, roi de Juda, et une partie des vases de la maison de Dieu ; et il les emporta au pays de Sennaar, dans la maison de son dieu, et il mit les vases dans la maison du trésor de son dieu.
Blessed art thou, O Lord God of our fathers: thy name is worthy to be praised and glorified for evermore:3 Le roi dit à Asphénez, chef des eunuques, d'amener quelques-uns des enfants d'Israël, de race royale et princière,
For thou art righteous in all the things that thou hast done to us: yea, true are all thy works, thy ways are right, and all thy judgments truth.4 de jeunes hommes en qui il n'y eût aucun défaut, beaux de figure, instruits en toute sagesse, habiles en science et en intelligence (dans les arts), qui pussent servir dans le palais du roi, et à qui l'on apprendrait les lettres et la langue des Chaldéens.
In all the things that thou hast brought upon us, and upon the holy city of our fathers, even Jerusalem, thou hast executed true judgment: for according to truth and judgment didst thou bring all these things upon us because of our sins.5 Et le roi leur assigna pour chaque jour des mets de sa table, et du vin dont il buvait lui-même, afin qu'après avoir été élevés pendant trois ans, ils parussent ensuite (ils puissent demeurer) en présence du roi.
For we have sinned and committed iniquity, departing from thee.6 Parmi eux se trouvèrent, d'entre les enfants de Juda, Daniel, Ananias, Misaël et Azarias.
In all things have we trespassed, and not obeyed thy commandments, nor kept them, neither done as thou hast commanded us, that it might go well with us.7 Et le chef des eunuques leur donna des noms : à Daniel celui de Baltassar, à Ananias celui de Sidrach, à Misaël celui de Misach, et à Azarias celui d'Abdénago.
Wherefore all that thou hast brought upon us, and every thing that thou hast done to us, thou hast done in true judgment.8 Or Daniel résolut dans son cœur de ne pas se souiller par les mets du roi et par le vin qu'il buvait, et il pria le chef des eunuques de ne pas (l'obliger à) se souiller.
And thou didst deliver us into the hands of lawless enemies, most hateful forsakers of God, and to an unjust king, and the most wicked in all the world.9 Or Dieu concilia à Daniel les bonnes grâces et la bienveillance du chef (prince) des eunuques.
And now we cannot open our mouths, we are become a shame and reproach to thy servants; and to them that worship thee.10 Et le chef (prince) des eunuques dit à Daniel : Je crains le roi mon seigneur, qui a déterminé ce que vous devez manger et boire ; s'il voit vos visages plus maigres que ceux des autres jeunes gens de votre âge, vous exposerez ma tête auprès (à la condamnation) du roi.
Yet deliver us not up wholly, for thy name's sake, neither disannul thou thy covenant:11 Alors Daniel dit à Malasar, à qui le chef (prince) des eunuques avait confié la garde de Daniel, d'Ananias, de Misaël et d'Azarias :
And cause not thy mercy to depart from us, for thy beloved Abraham's sake, for thy servant Issac's sake, and for thy holy Israel's sake;12 Eprouve(z), je (vous) t'en prie, tes (vos) serviteurs pendant dix jours, et qu'on nous donne des légumes à manger et de l'eau à boire ;
To whom thou hast spoken and promised, that thou wouldest multiply their seed as the stars of heaven, and as the sand that lieth upon the seashore.13 puis regarde(z) nos visages et les visages des jeunes gens qui se nourrissent des mets du roi, et tu (vous) agiras(ez) avec tes (vos) serviteurs selon ce que tu (vous) auras(ez) vu.
For we, O Lord, are become less than any nation, and be kept under this day in all the world because of our sins.14 Ayant entendu ces paroles, il les éprouva pendant dix jours.
Neither is there at this time prince, or prophet, or leader, or burnt offering, or sacrifice, or oblation, or incense, or place to sacrifice before thee, and to find mercy.15 Après les dix jours, ils avaient meilleur visage et plus d'embonpoint que tous les jeunes gens qui se nourrissaient des mets du roi.
Nevertheless in a contrite heart and an humble spirit let us be accepted.16 Malasar emportait donc les mets et le vin qu'on leur servait, et il leur donnait des légumes.
Like as in the burnt offerings of rams and bullocks, and like as in ten thousands of fat lambs: so let our sacrifice be in thy sight this day, and grant that we may wholly go after thee: for they shall not be confounded that put their trust in thee.17 Or Dieu donna à ces jeunes hommes la science et la connaissance de tout livre et de toute sagesse, et il donna à Daniel l'intelligence de toutes les visions et de tous les songes.
And now we follow thee with all our heart, we fear thee, and seek thy face.18 Le temps après lequel le roi avait ordonné qu'on lui présentât ces jeunes gens étant donc écoulé, le chef des eunuques les présenta à Nabuchodonosor.
Put us not to shame: but deal with us after thy lovingkindness, and according to the multitude of thy mercies.19 Et le roi, s'étant entretenu avec eux, trouva qu'il n'y en avait pas, parmi tous, qui égalassent Daniel, Ananias, Misaël et Azarias ; et ils furent admis (demeurèrent) au service du roi.
Deliver us also according to thy marvellous works, and give glory to thy name, O Lord: and let all them that do thy servants hurt be ashamed;20 Sur toutes les questions qui exigeaient de la sagesse et de l'intelligence, et que le roi leur posa, il les trouva dix fois supérieurs à tous les devins et à tous les mages qui étaient dans tout son royaume.
And let them be confounded in all their power and might, and let their strength be broken;21 Or Daniel fut ainsi (à la cour) jusqu'à la première année du Cyrus.
And let them know that thou art God, the only God, and glorious over the whole world.
And the king's servants, that put them in, ceased not to make the oven hot with rosin, pitch, tow, and small wood;
So that the flame streamed forth above the furnace forty and nine cubits.
And it passed through, and burned those Chaldeans it found about the furnace.
But the angel of the Lord came down into the oven together with Azarias and his fellows, and smote the flame of the fire out of the oven;
And made the midst of the furnace as it had been a moist whistling wind, so that the fire touched them not at all, neither hurt nor troubled them.
Then the three, as out of one mouth, praised, glorified, and blessed, God in the furnace, saying,
Blessed art thou, O Lord God of our fathers: and to be praised and exalted above all for ever.
And blessed is thy glorious and holy name: and to be praised and exalted above all for ever.
Blessed art thou in the temple of thine holy glory: and to be praised and glorified above all for ever.
Blessed art thou that beholdest the depths, and sittest upon the cherubims: and to be praised and exalted above all for ever.
Blessed art thou on the glorious throne of thy kingdom: and to be praised and glorified above all for ever.
Blessed art thou in the firmament of heaven: and above ail to be praised and glorified for ever.
