KING JAMES BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
Desire not a multitude of unprofitable children, neither delight in ungodly sons.1 Rejoice not in ungodly children, if they be multiplied: neither be delighted in them, if the fear of God be not with them.
Though they multiply, rejoice not in them, except the fear of the Lord be with them.2 Trust not to their life, and respect not their labours.
Trust not thou in their life, neither respect their multitude: for one that is just is better than a thousand; and better it is to die without children, than to have them that are ungodly.3 For better is one that feareth God, than a thousand ungodly children.
For by one that hath understanding shall the city be replenished: but the kindred of the wicked shall speedily become desolate.4 And it is better to die without children, than to leave ungodly children.
Many such things have I seen with mine eyes, and mine ear hath heard greater things than these.5 By one that is wise a country shall be inhabited, the tribe of the ungodly shall become desolate.
In the congregation of the ungodly shall a fire be kindled; and in a rebellious nation wrath is set on fire.6 Many such things hath my eyes seen, and greater things than these my ear hath heard.
He was not pacified toward the old giants, who fell away in the strength of their foolishness.7 In the congregation of sinners a fire shall be kindled, and in an unbelieving nation wrath shall dame out.
Neither spared he the place where Lot sojourned, but abhorred them for their pride.8 The ancient giants did not obtain pardon for their sine, who were destroyed trusting to their own strength:
He pitied not the people of perdition, who were taken away in their sins:9 And he spared not the place where Lot sojourned, but abhorred them for the pride of their word.
Nor the six hundred thousand footmen, who were gathered together in the hardness of their hearts.10 He had not pity on them, destroying the whole nation that extolled themselves in their sine.
And if there be one stiffnecked among the people, it is marvel if he escape unpunished: for mercy and wrath are with him; he is mighty to forgive, and to pour out displeasure.11 So did he with the six hundred thousand footmen, who were gathered together in the hardness of their heart: and if one had been stiffnecked, it is a wonder if he had escaped unpunished:
As his mercy is great, so is his correction also: he judgeth a man according to his works12 For mercy and wrath are with him. He is mighty to forgive, and to pour out indignation:
The sinner shall not escape with his spoils: and the patience of the godly shall not be frustrate.13 According as his mercy is, so his correction judgeth a man according to his works.
Make way for every work of mercy: for every man shall find according to his works.14 The sinner shall not escape in his rapines, and the patience of him that sheweth mercy shall not be put off.
The Lord hardened Pharaoh, that he should not know him, that his powerful works might be known to the world.15 All mercy shall make a place for every man according to the merit of his works, and according to the wisdom of his sojournment.
His mercy is manifest to every creature; and he hath separated his light from the darkness with an adamant.16 Say not: I shall be hidden from God. and who shall remember me from on high?
Say not thou, I will hide myself from the Lord: shall any remember me from above? I shall not be remembered among so many people: for what is my soul among such an infinite number of creatures?17 In such a multitude I shall not be known: for what is my soul in such an immense creation?
Behold, the heaven, and the heaven of heavens, the deep, and the earth, and all that therein is, shall be moved when he shall visit.18 Behold the heaven, and the heavens of heavens, the deep, and all the earth, and the things that are in them, shall be moved in his sight,
The mountains also and foundations of the earth be shaken with trembling, when the Lord looketh upon them.19 The mountains also, and the hills, end the foundations of the earth: when God shall look upon them, they shall be shaken with trembling.
No heart can think upon these things worthily: and who is able to conceive his ways?20 And in all these things the heart is senseless: and every heart is understood by him:
It is a tempest which no man can see: for the most part of his works are hid.21 And his ways who shall understand, and the storm, which no eye of man see?
Who can declare the works of his justice? or who can endure them? for his covenant is afar off, and the trial of all things is in the end.22 For many of his works are hidden: hut the works of his justice who shall declare? or who shall endure? for the testament is far from some, and the examination of all is in the end.
He that wanteth understanding will think upon vain things: and a foolish man erring imagineth follies.23 He that wanteth understanding thinketh vain things: and the foolish, and erring man, thinketh foolish things.
by son, hearken unto me, and learn knowledge, and mark my words with thy heart.24 Hearken to me, my son, and learn the discipline of understanding, and attend to my words in thy heart.
I will shew forth doctrine in weight, and declare his knowledge exactly.25 And I will shew forth good doctrine in equity, and will seek to declare wisdom: and attend to my words in thy heart, whilst with equity of spirit I tell thee the virtues that God hath put upon his works from the beginning, and I shew forth in truth his knowledge.
The works of the Lord are done in judgment from the beginning: and from the time he made them he disposed the parts thereof.26 The works of God are done in judgment from the beginning, and from the making of them he distinguished their parts, and their beginnings in their generations.
He garnished his works for ever, and in his hand are the chief of them unto all generations: they neither labour, nor are weary, nor cease from their works.27 He beautified their works for ever, they have neither hungered, nor laboured, and they have not ceased from their works.
None of them hindereth another, and they shall never disobey his word.28 Nor shall any of them straiten his neighbour at any time.
After this the Lord looked upon the earth, and filled it with his blessings.29 Be not thou incredulous to his word.
With all manner of living things hath he covered the face thereof; and they shall return into it again.30 After this God looked upon the earth, and filled it with his goods.
The soul of every living thing hath shewn forth before the face thereof, and into it they return again.
