Τι λοιπον θελομεν ειπει οτι απηλαυσεν Αβρααμ ο πατηρ ημων κατα σαρκα;1 Then what do we say about Abraham, the ancestor from whom we are descended physical y?
Διοτι εαν ο Αβρααμ εδικαιωθη εκ των εργων, εχει καυχημα, αλλ' ουχι ενωπιον του Θεου.2 If Abraham had been justified because of what he had done, then he would have had something toboast about. But not before God:
Επειδη τι λεγει η γραφη; Και επιστευσεν Αβρααμ εις τον Θεον, και ελογισθη εις αυτον εις δικαιοσυνην.3 does not scripture say: Abraham put his faith in God and this was reckoned to him as uprightness?
Εις δε τον εργαζομενον ο μισθος δεν λογιζεται ως χαρις, αλλ' ως χρεος?4 Now, when someone works, the wages for this are not considered as a favour but as due;
εις τον μη εργαζομενον ομως, πιστευοντα δε εις τον δικαιουντα τον ασεβη, η πιστις αυτου λογιζεται εις δικαιοσυνην,5 however, when someone, without working, puts faith in the one who justifies the godless, it is this faiththat is reckoned as uprightness.
καθως και ο Δαβιδ λεγει τον μακαρισμον του ανθρωπου, εις τον οποιον ο Θεος λογιζεται δικαιοσυνην, χωρις εργων?6 David, too, says the same: he cal s someone blessed if God attributes uprightness to that person,apart from any action undertaken:
Μακαριοι εκεινοι, των οποιων συνεχωρηθησαν αι ανομιαι και των οποιων εσκεπασθησαν αι αμαρτιαι?7 How blessed are those whose offence is forgiven, whose sin is blotted out.
μακαριος ο ανθρωπος, εις τον οποιον ο Κυριος δεν θελει λογιζεσθαι αμαρτιαν.8 How blessed are those to whom the Lord imputes no guilt.
Ουτος λοιπον ο μακαρισμος γινεται δια τους περιτετμημενους η και δια τους απεριτμητους; διοτι λεγομεν οτι η πιστις ελογισθη εις τον Αβρααμ εις δικαιοσυνην.9 Is this blessing only for the circumcised, or is it said of the uncircumcised as wel ? Wel , we said ofAbraham that his faith was reckoned to him as uprightness.
Πως λοιπον ελογισθη; οτε ητο εν περιτομη η εν ακροβυστια; Ουχι εν περιτομη αλλ' εν ακροβυστια?10 Now how did this come about? When he was already circumcised, or before he had beencircumcised? Not when he had been circumcised, but while he was still uncircumcised;
και ελαβε το σημειον της περιτομης, σφραγιδα της δικαιοσυνης της εκ πιστεως της εν τη ακροβυστια, δια να ηναι αυτος πατηρ παντων των πιστευοντων ενω υπαρχουσιν εν τη ακροβυστια, δια να λογισθη και εις αυτους η δικαιοσυνη,11 and circumcision was given to him later, as a sign and a guarantee that the faith which he had whilestill uncircumcised was reckoned to him as uprightness. In this way, Abraham was to be the ancestor of albelievers who are uncircumcised, so that they might be reckoned as upright;
και πατηρ της περιτομης, ουχι μονον εις τους περιτετμημενους, αλλα και εις τους περιπατουντας εις τα ιχνη της πιστεως του πατρος ημων Αβρααμ της εν τη ακροβυστια.12 as well as the ancestor of those of the circumcision who not only have their circumcision but who alsofol ow our ancestor Abraham along the path of faith that he trod before he was circumcised.
Επειδη η επαγγελια προς τον Αβρααμ η προς το σπερμα αυτου, οτι εμελλε να ηναι κληρονομος του κοσμου, δεν εγεινε δια του νομου, αλλα δια της δικαιοσυνης της εκ πιστεως.13 For the promise to Abraham and his descendants that he should inherit the world was not through theLaw, but through the uprightness of faith.
Διοτι εαν ηναι κληρονομοι οι εκ του νομου, η πιστις εματαιωθη και κατηργηθη η επαγγελια?14 For if it is those who live by the Law who wil gain the inheritance, faith is worthless and the promise iswithout force;
επειδη ο νομος επιφερει οργην? διοτι οπου δεν υπαρχει νομος, ουδε παραβασις υπαρχει.15 for the Law produces nothing but God's retribution, and it is only where there is no Law that it ispossible to live without breaking the Law.
Δια τουτο εκ πιστεως η κληρονομια, δια να ηναι κατα χαριν, ωστε η επαγγελια να ηναι βεβαια εις απαν το σπερμα, ουχι μονον το εκ του νομου, αλλα και το εκ της πιστεως του Αβρααμ, οστις ειναι πατηρ παντων ημων,16 That is why the promise is to faith, so that it comes as a free gift and is secure for al thedescendants, not only those who rely on the Law but al those others who rely on the faith of Abraham, theancestor of us all
καθως ειναι γεγραμμενον, οτι πατερα πολλων εθνων σε κατεστησα, ενωπιον του Θεου εις τον οποιον επιστευσε, του ζωοποιουντος τους νεκρους και καλουντος τα μη οντα ως οντα?17 (as scripture says: I have made you the father of many nations). Abraham is our father in the eyes ofGod, in whom he put his faith, and who brings the dead to life and cal s into existence what does not yet exist.
οστις καιτοι μη εχων ελπιδα επιστευσεν επ' ελπιδι, οτι εμελλε να γεινη πατηρ πολλων εθνων κατα το λαληθεν? Ουτω θελει εισθαι το σπερμα σου?18 Though there seemed no hope, he hoped and believed that he was to become father of many nationsin fulfilment of the promise: Just so wil your descendants be.
και μη ασθενησας κατα την πιστιν δεν εσυλλογισθη το σωμα αυτου οτι ητο ηδη νενεκρωμενον, εκατονταετης περιπου ων, και την νεκρωσιν της μητρας της Σαρρας?19 Even the thought that his body was as good as dead -- he was about a hundred years old -- and thatSarah's womb was dead too did not shake his faith.
ουδε εδιστασεν εις την επαγγελιαν του Θεου δια της απιστιας, αλλ' ενεδυναμωθη εις την πιστιν, δοξασας τον Θεον,20 Counting on the promise of God, he did not doubt or disbelieve, but drew strength from faith and gaveglory to God,
και πεποιθως οτι εκεινο, το οποιον υπεσχεθη, ειναι δυνατος και να εκτελεση.21 ful y convinced that whatever God promised he has the power to perform.
Δια τουτο και ελογισθη εις αυτον εις δικαιοσυνην.22 This is the faith that was reckoned to him as uprightness.
Δεν εγραφη δε δι' αυτον μονον, οτι ελογισθη εις αυτον,23 And the word 'reckoned' in scripture applies not only to him;
αλλα και δι' ημας, εις τους οποιους μελλει να λογισθη, τους πιστευοντας εις τον αναστησαντα εκ νεκρων Ιησουν τον Κυριον ημων,24 it is there for our sake too -- our faith, too, wil be 'reckoned'
οστις παρεδοθη δια τας αμαρτιας ημων και ανεστη δια την δικαιωσιν ημων.25 because we believe in him who raised from the dead our Lord Jesus who was handed over to deathfor our sins and raised to life for our justification.
