εν ταις ημεραις εκειναις ανεστη ματταθιας υιος ιωαννου του συμεων ιερευς των υιων ιωαριβ απο ιερουσαλημ και εκαθισεν εν μωδειν1 In those days Mattathias, son of John, son of Simeon, a priest of the family of Joarib, left Jerusalem and settled in Modein.
και αυτω υιοι πεντε ιωαννης ο επικαλουμενος γαδδι2 He had five sons: John, who was called Gaddi;
σιμων ο καλουμενος θασσι3 Simon, who was called Thassi;
ιουδας ο καλουμενος μακκαβαιος4 Judas, who was called Maccabeus;
ελεαζαρ ο καλουμενος αυαραν ιωναθης ο καλουμενος απφους5 Eleazar, who was called Avaran; and Jonathan, who was called Apphus.
και ειδεν τας βλασφημιας τας γινομενας εν ιουδα και εν ιερουσαλημ6 When he saw the sacrileges that were being committed in Judah and in Jerusalem,
Why was I born to see the ruin of my people and the ruin of the holy city, and to sit idle while it is given into the hands of enemies, and the sanctuary into the hands of strangers?
εγενετο ο ναος αυτης ως ανηρ αδοξος8 "Her temple has become like a man disgraced,
τα σκευη της δοξης αυτης αιχμαλωτα απηχθη απεκτανθη τα νηπια αυτης εν ταις πλατειαις αυτης οι νεανισκοι αυτης εν ρομφαια εχθρου9 her glorious ornaments have been carried off as spoils, Her infants have been murdered in her streets, her young men by the sword of the enemy.
ποιον εθνος ουκ εκληρονομησεν βασιλεια και ουκ εκρατησεν των σκυλων αυτης10 What nation has not taken its share of her realm, and laid its hand on her possessions?
πας ο κοσμος αυτης αφηρεθη αντι ελευθερας εγενετο εις δουλην11 All her adornment has been taken away. From being free, she has become a slave.
και ιδου τα αγια ημων και η καλλονη ημων και η δοξα ημων ηρημωθη και εβεβηλωσαν αυτα τα εθνη12 We see our sanctuary and our beauty and our glory laid waste, And the Gentiles have defiled them!
ινα τι ημιν ετι ζωη13 Why are we still alive?"
και διερρηξεν ματταθιας και οι υιοι αυτου τα ιματια αυτων και περιεβαλοντο σακκους και επενθησαν σφοδρα14 Then Mattathias and his sons tore their garments, put on sackcloth, and mourned bitterly.
και ηλθον οι παρα του βασιλεως οι καταναγκαζοντες την αποστασιαν εις μωδειν την πολιν ινα θυσιασωσιν15 The officers of the king in charge of enforcing the apostasy came to the city of Modein to organize the sacrifices.
και πολλοι απο ισραηλ προς αυτους προσηλθον και ματταθιας και οι υιοι αυτου συνηχθησαν16 Many of Israel joined them, but Mattathias and his sons gathered in a group apart.
και απεκριθησαν οι παρα του βασιλεως και ειπον τω ματταθια λεγοντες αρχων και ενδοξος και μεγας ει εν τη πολει ταυτη και εστηρισμενος υιοις και αδελφοις17 Then the officers of the king addressed Mattathias: "You are a leader, an honorable and great man in this city, supported by sons and kinsmen.
νυν προσελθε πρωτος και ποιησον το προσταγμα του βασιλεως ως εποιησαν παντα τα εθνη και οι ανδρες ιουδα και οι καταλειφθεντες εν ιερουσαλημ και εση συ και οι υιοι σου των φιλων του βασιλεως και συ και οι υιοι σου δοξασθησεσθε αργυριω και χρυσιω και αποστολαις πολλαις18 Come now, be the first to obey the king's command, as all the Gentiles and the men of Judah and those who are left in Jerusalem have done. Then you and your sons shall be numbered among the King's Friends, and shall be enriched with silver and gold and many gifts."
και απεκριθη ματταθιας και ειπεν φωνη μεγαλη ει παντα τα εθνη τα εν οικω της βασιλειας του βασιλεως ακουουσιν αυτου αποστηναι εκαστος απο λατρειας πατερων αυτου και ηρετισαντο εν ταις εντολαις αυτου19 But Mattathias answered in a loud voice: "Although all the Gentiles in the king's realm obey him, so that each forsakes the religion of his fathers and consents to the king's orders,
καγω και οι υιοι μου και οι αδελφοι μου πορευσομεθα εν διαθηκη πατερων ημων20 yet I and my sons and my kinsmen will keep to the covenant of our fathers.
ιλεως ημιν καταλιπειν νομον και δικαιωματα21 God forbid that we should forsake the law and the commandments.
των λογων του βασιλεως ουκ ακουσομεθα παρελθειν την λατρειαν ημων δεξιαν η αριστεραν22 We will not obey the words of the king nor depart from our religion in the slightest degree."
και ως επαυσατο λαλων τους λογους τουτους προσηλθεν ανηρ ιουδαιος εν οφθαλμοις παντων θυσιασαι επι του βωμου εν μωδειν κατα το προσταγμα του βασιλεως23 As he finished saying these words, a certain Jew came forward in the sight of all to offer sacrifice on the altar in Modein according to the king's order.
και ειδεν ματταθιας και εζηλωσεν και ετρομησαν οι νεφροι αυτου και ανηνεγκεν θυμον κατα το κριμα και δραμων εσφαξεν αυτον επι τον βωμον24 When Mattathias saw him, he was filled with zeal; his heart was moved and his just fury was aroused; he sprang forward and killed him upon the altar.
και τον ανδρα του βασιλεως τον αναγκαζοντα θυειν απεκτεινεν εν τω καιρω εκεινω και τον βωμον καθειλεν25 At the same time, he also killed the messenger of the king who was forcing them to sacrifice, and he tore down the altar.
και εζηλωσεν τω νομω καθως εποιησεν φινεες τω ζαμβρι υιω σαλωμ26 Thus he showed his zeal for the law, just as Phinehas did with Zimri, son of Salu.
και ανεκραξεν ματταθιας εν τη πολει φωνη μεγαλη λεγων πας ο ζηλων τω νομω και ιστων διαθηκην εξελθετω οπισω μου27 Then Mattathias went through the city shouting, "Let everyone who is zealous for the law and who stands by the covenant follow after me!"
και εφυγεν αυτος και οι υιοι αυτου εις τα ορη και εγκατελιπον οσα ειχον εν τη πολει28 Thereupon he fled to the mountains with his sons, leaving behind in the city all their possessions.
τοτε κατεβησαν πολλοι ζητουντες δικαιοσυνην και κριμα εις την ερημον καθισαι εκει29 Many who sought to live according to righteousness and religious custom went out into the desert to settle there,
αυτοι και οι υιοι αυτων και αι γυναικες αυτων και τα κτηνη αυτων οτι εσκληρυνθη επ' αυτους τα κακα30 they and their sons, their wives and their cattle, because misfortunes pressed so hard on them.
και ανηγγελη τοις ανδρασιν του βασιλεως και ταις δυναμεσιν αι ησαν εν ιερουσαλημ πολει δαυιδ οτι κατεβησαν ανδρες οιτινες διεσκεδασαν την εντολην του βασιλεως εις τους κρυφους εν τη ερημω31 It was reported to the officers and soldiers of the king who were in the City of David, in Jerusalem, that certain men who had flouted the king's order had gone out to the hiding places in the desert.
και εδραμον οπισω αυτων πολλοι και κατελαβοντο αυτους και παρενεβαλον επ' αυτους και συνεστησαντο προς αυτους πολεμον εν τη ημερα των σαββατων32 Many hurried out after them, and having caught up with them, camped opposite and prepared to attack them on the sabbath.
και ειπον προς αυτους εως του νυν εξελθοντες ποιησατε κατα τον λογον του βασιλεως και ζησεσθε33 "Enough of this!" the pursuers said to them. "Come out and obey the king's command, and your lives will be spared."
και ειπον ουκ εξελευσομεθα ουδε ποιησομεν τον λογον του βασιλεως βεβηλωσαι την ημεραν των σαββατων34 But they replied, "We will not come out, nor will we obey the king's command to profane the sabbath."
και εταχυναν επ' αυτους πολεμον35 Then the enemy attacked them at once;
και ουκ απεκριθησαν αυτοις ουδε λιθον ενετιναξαν αυτοις ουδε ενεφραξαν τους κρυφους36 but they did not retaliate; they neither threw stones, nor blocked up their own hiding places.
λεγοντες αποθανωμεν παντες εν τη απλοτητι ημων μαρτυρει εφ' ημας ο ουρανος και η γη οτι ακριτως απολλυτε ημας37 They said, "Let us all die without reproach; heaven and earth are our witnesses that you destroy us unjustly."
και ανεστησαν επ' αυτους εν πολεμω τοις σαββασιν και απεθανον αυτοι και αι γυναικες αυτων και τα τεκνα αυτων και τα κτηνη αυτων εως χιλιων ψυχων ανθρωπων38 So the officers and soldiers attacked them on the sabbath, and they died with their wives, their children and their cattle, to the number of a thousand persons.
και εγνω ματταθιας και οι φιλοι αυτου και επενθησαν επ' αυτους σφοδρα39 When Mattathias and his friends heard of it, they mourned deeply for them.
και ειπεν ανηρ τω πλησιον αυτου εαν παντες ποιησωμεν ως οι αδελφοι ημων εποιησαν και μη πολεμησωμεν προς τα εθνη υπερ της ψυχης ημων και των δικαιωματων ημων νυν ταχιον ολεθρευσουσιν ημας απο της γης40 "If we all do as our kinsmen have done," they said to one another, "and do not fight against the Gentiles for our lives and our traditions, they will soon destroy us from the earth."
και εβουλευσαντο τη ημερα εκεινη λεγοντες πας ανθρωπος ος εαν ελθη εφ' ημας εις πολεμον τη ημερα των σαββατων πολεμησωμεν κατεναντι αυτου και ου μη αποθανωμεν παντες καθως απεθανον οι αδελφοι ημων εν τοις κρυφοις41 On that day they came to this decision: "Let us fight against anyone who attacks us on the sabbath, so that we may not all die as our kinsmen died in the hiding places."
τοτε συνηχθησαν προς αυτους συναγωγη ασιδαιων ισχυροι δυναμει απο ισραηλ πας ο εκουσιαζομενος τω νομω42 Then they were joined by a group of Hasideans, valiant Israelites, all of them devout followers of the law.
και παντες οι φυγαδευοντες απο των κακων προσετεθησαν αυτοις και εγενοντο αυτοις εις στηριγμα43 And all those who were fleeing from the disaster joined them and supported them.
και συνεστησαντο δυναμιν και επαταξαν αμαρτωλους εν οργη αυτων και ανδρας ανομους εν θυμω αυτων και οι λοιποι εφυγον εις τα εθνη σωθηναι44 They gathered an army and struck down sinners in their anger and lawbreakers in their wrath, and the survivors fled to the Gentiles for safety.
και εκυκλωσεν ματταθιας και οι φιλοι αυτου και καθειλον τους βωμους45 Mattathias and his friends went about and tore down the pagan altars;
και περιετεμον τα παιδαρια τα απεριτμητα οσα ευρον εν οριοις ισραηλ εν ισχυι46 they also enforced circumcision for any uncircumcised boys whom they found in the territory of Israel.
και εδιωξαν τους υιους της υπερηφανιας και κατευοδωθη το εργον εν χειρι αυτων47 They put to flight the arrogant, and the work prospered in their hands.
και αντελαβοντο του νομου εκ χειρος των εθνων και των βασιλεων και ουκ εδωκαν κερας τω αμαρτωλω48 They saved the law from the hands of the Gentiles and of the kings and did not let the sinner triumph.
και ηγγισαν αι ημεραι ματταθιου αποθανειν και ειπεν τοις υιοις αυτου νυν εστηρισθη υπερηφανια και ελεγμος και καιρος καταστροφης και οργη θυμου49 When the time came for Mattathias to die, he said to his sons: "Arrogance and scorn have now grown strong; it is a time of disaster and violent anger.
νυν τεκνα ζηλωσατε τω νομω και δοτε τας ψυχας υμων υπερ διαθηκης πατερων ημων50 Therefore, my sons, be zealous for the law and give your lives for the covenant of our fathers.
και μνησθητε τα εργα των πατερων α εποιησαν εν ταις γενεαις αυτων και δεξασθε δοξαν μεγαλην και ονομα αιωνιον51 "Remember the deeds that our fathers did in their times, and you shall win great glory and an everlasting name.
αβρααμ ουχι εν πειρασμω ευρεθη πιστος και ελογισθη αυτω εις δικαιοσυνην52 Was not Abraham found faithful in trial, and it was reputed to him as uprightness?
ιωσηφ εν καιρω στενοχωριας αυτου εφυλαξεν εντολην και εγενετο κυριος αιγυπτου53 Joseph, when in distress, kept the commandment, and he became master of Egypt.
φινεες ο πατηρ ημων εν τω ζηλωσαι ζηλον ελαβεν διαθηκην ιερωσυνης αιωνιας54 Phinehas our father, for his burning zeal, received the covenant of an everlasting priesthood.

δαυιδ εν τω ελεει αυτου εκληρονομησεν θρονον βασιλειας εις αιωνας57 David, for his piety, received as a heritage a throne of everlasting royalty.
ηλιας εν τω ζηλωσαι ζηλον νομου ανελημφθη εις τον ουρανον58 Elijah, for his burning zeal for the law, was taken up to heaven.
ανανιας αζαριας μισαηλ πιστευσαντες εσωθησαν εκ φλογος59 Hananiah, Azariah and Mishael, for their faith, were saved from the fire.
δανιηλ εν τη απλοτητι αυτου ερρυσθη εκ στοματος λεοντων60 Daniel, for his innocence, was delivered from the jaws of lions.
και ουτως εννοηθητε κατα γενεαν και γενεαν οτι παντες οι ελπιζοντες επ' αυτον ουκ ασθενησουσιν61 And so, consider this from generation to generation, that none who hope in him shall fail in strength.
και απο λογων ανδρος αμαρτωλου μη φοβηθητε οτι η δοξα αυτου εις κοπρια και εις σκωληκας62 Do not fear the words of a sinful man, for his glory ends in corruption and worms.
σημερον επαρθησεται και αυριον ου μη ευρεθη οτι επεστρεψεν εις τον χουν αυτου και ο διαλογισμος αυτου απολειται63 Today he is exalted, and tomorrow he is not to be found, because he has returned to his dust, and his schemes have perished.
τεκνα ανδριζεσθε και ισχυσατε εν τω νομω οτι εν αυτω δοξασθησεσθε64 Children! be courageous and strong in keeping the law, for by it you shall be glorified.
και ιδου συμεων ο αδελφος υμων οιδα οτι ανηρ βουλης εστιν αυτου ακουετε πασας τας ημερας αυτος εσται υμων πατηρ65 "Here is your brother Simeon who I know is a wise man; listen to him always, and he will be a father to you.
και ιουδας μακκαβαιος ισχυρος δυναμει εκ νεοτητος αυτου αυτος εσται υμιν αρχων στρατιας και πολεμησει πολεμον λαων66 And Judas Maccabeus, a warrior from his youth, shall be the leader of your army and direct the war against the nations.
και υμεις προσαξετε προς υμας παντας τους ποιητας του νομου και εκδικησατε εκδικησιν του λαου υμων67 You shall also gather about you all who observe the law, and you shall avenge the wrongs of your people.
