GREEK BIBLEKING JAMES BIBLE
και απεστειλεν αντιοχος υιος δημητριου του βασιλεως επιστολας απο των νησων της θαλασσης σιμωνι ιερει και εθναρχη των ιουδαιων και παντι τω εθνει1 Moreover Antiochus son of Demetrius the king sent letters from the isles of the sea unto Simon the priest and prince of the Jews, and to all the people;
και ησαν περιεχουσαι τον τροπον τουτον βασιλευς αντιοχος σιμωνι ιερει μεγαλω και εθναρχη και εθνει ιουδαιων χαιρειν2 The contents whereof were these: King Antiochus to Simon the high priest and prince of his nation, and to the people of the Jews, greeting:
επει τινες λοιμοι κατεκρατησαν της βασιλειας των πατερων ημων βουλομαι δε αντιποιησασθαι της βασιλειας οπως αποκαταστησω αυτην ως ην το προτερον εξενολογησα δε πληθος δυναμεων και κατεσκευασα πλοια πολεμικα3 Forasmuch as certain pestilent men have usurped the kingdom of our fathers, and my purpose is to challenge it again, that I may restore it to the old estate, and to that end have gathered a multitude of foreign soldiers together, and prepared ships of war;
βουλομαι δε εκβηναι κατα την χωραν οπως μετελθω τους κατεφθαρκοτας την χωραν ημων και τους ηρημωκοτας πολεις πολλας εν τη βασιλεια μου4 My meaning also being to go through the country, that I may be avenged of them that have destroyed it, and made many cities in the kingdom desolate:
νυν ουν ιστημι σοι παντα τα αφεματα α αφηκαν σοι οι προ εμου βασιλεις και οσα αλλα δοματα αφηκαν σοι5 Now therefore I confirm unto thee all the oblations which the kings before me granted thee, and whatsoever gifts besides they granted.
και επετρεψα σοι ποιησαι κομμα ιδιον νομισμα τη χωρα σου6 I give thee leave also to coin money for thy country with thine own stamp.
ιερουσαλημ δε και τα αγια ειναι ελευθερα και παντα τα οπλα οσα κατεσκευασας και τα οχυρωματα α ωκοδομησας ων κρατεις μενετω σοι7 And as concerning Jerusalem and the sanctuary, let them be free; and all the armour that thou hast made, and fortresses that thou hast built, and keepest in thine hands, let them remain unto thee.
και παν οφειλημα βασιλικον και τα εσομενα βασιλικα απο του νυν και εις τον απαντα χρονον αφιεσθω σοι8 And if anything be, or shall be, owing to the king, let it be forgiven thee from this time forth for evermore.
ως δ' αν κρατησωμεν της βασιλειας ημων δοξασομεν σε και το εθνος σου και το ιερον δοξη μεγαλη ωστε φανεραν γενεσθαι την δοξαν υμων εν παση τη γη9 Furthermore, when we have obtained our kingdom, we will honour thee, and thy nation, and thy temple, with great honour, so that your honour shall be known throughout the world.
ετους τεταρτου και εβδομηκοστου και εκατοστου εξηλθεν αντιοχος εις την γην των πατερων αυτου και συνηλθον προς αυτον πασαι αι δυναμεις ωστε ολιγους ειναι συν τρυφωνι10 In the hundred threescore and fourteenth year went Antiochus into the land of his fathers: at which time all the forces came together unto him, so that few were left with Tryphon.
και εδιωξεν αυτον αντιοχος και ηλθεν εις δωρα φευγων την επι θαλασσης11 Wherefore being pursued by king Antiochus, he fled unto Dora, which lieth by the sea side:
ηδει γαρ οτι επισυνηκται επ' αυτον τα κακα και αφηκαν αυτον αι δυναμεις12 For he saw that troubles came upon him all at once, and that his forces had forsaken him.
και παρενεβαλεν αντιοχος επι δωρα και συν αυτω δωδεκα μυριαδες ανδρων πολεμιστων και οκτακισχιλια ιππος13 Then camped Antiochus against Dora, having with him an hundred and twenty thousand men of war, and eight thousand horsemen.
και εκυκλωσεν την πολιν και τα πλοια απο θαλασσης συνηψαν και εθλιβε την πολιν απο της γης και της θαλασσης και ουκ ειασεν ουδενα εκπορευεσθαι ουδε εισπορευεσθαι14 And when he had compassed the city round about, and joined ships close to the town on the sea side, he vexed the city by land and by sea, neither suffered he any to go out or in.
και ηλθεν νουμηνιος και οι παρ' αυτου εκ ρωμης εχοντες επιστολας τοις βασιλευσιν και ταις χωραις εν αις εγεγραπτο ταδε15 In the mean season came Numenius and his company from Rome, having letters to the kings and countries; wherein were written these things:
λευκιος υπατος ρωμαιων πτολεμαιω βασιλει χαιρειν16 Lucius, consul of the Romans unto king Ptolemee, greeting:
οι πρεσβευται των ιουδαιων ηλθον προς ημας φιλοι ημων και συμμαχοι ανανεουμενοι την εξ αρχης φιλιαν και συμμαχιαν απεσταλμενοι απο σιμωνος του αρχιερεως και του δημου των ιουδαιων17 The Jews' ambassadors, our friends and confederates, came unto us to renew the old friendship and league, being sent from Simon the high priest, and from the people of the Jews:
ηνεγκαν δε ασπιδα χρυσην απο μνων χιλιων18 And they brought a shield of gold of a thousand pound.
ηρεσεν ουν ημιν γραψαι τοις βασιλευσιν και ταις χωραις οπως μη εκζητησωσιν αυτοις κακα και μη πολεμησωσιν αυτους και τας πολεις αυτων και την χωραν αυτων και ινα μη συμμαχωσιν τοις πολεμουσιν προς αυτους19 We thought it good therefore to write unto the kings and countries, that they should do them no harm, nor fight against them, their cities, or countries, nor yet aid their enemies against them.
εδοξεν δε ημιν δεξασθαι την ασπιδα παρ' αυτων20 It seemed also good to us to receive the shield of them.
ει τινες ουν λοιμοι διαπεφευγασιν εκ της χωρας αυτων προς υμας παραδοτε αυτους σιμωνι τω αρχιερει οπως εκδικηση αυτους κατα τον νομον αυτων21 If therefore there be any pestilent fellows, that have fled from their country unto you, deliver them unto Simon the high priest, that he may punish them according to their own law.
και ταυτα εγραψεν δημητριω τω βασιλει και ατταλω και αριαραθη και αρσακη22 The same things wrote he likewise unto Demetrius the king, and Attalus, to Ariarathes, and Arsaces,
και εις πασας τας χωρας και σαμψαμη και σπαρτιαταις και εις δηλον και εις μυνδον και εις σικυωνα και εις την καριαν και εις σαμον και εις την παμφυλιαν και εις λυκιαν και εις αλικαρνασσον και εις ροδον και εις φασηλιδα και εις κω και εις σιδην και εις αραδον και γορτυναν και κνιδον και κυπρον και κυρηνην23 And to all the countries and to Sampsames, and the Lacedemonians, and to Delus, and Myndus, and Sicyon, and Caria, and Samos, and Pamphylia, and Lycia, and Halicarnassus, and Rhodus, and Aradus, and Cos, and Side, and Aradus, and Gortyna, and Cnidus, and Cyprus, and Cyrene.
το δε αντιγραφον τουτων εγραψαν σιμωνι τω αρχιερει24 And the copy hereof they wrote to Simon the high priest.
αντιοχος δε ο βασιλευς παρενεβαλεν επι δωρα εν τη δευτερα προσαγων δια παντος αυτη τας χειρας και μηχανας ποιουμενος και συνεκλεισεν τον τρυφωνα του εκπορευεσθαι και εισπορευεσθαι25 So Antiochus the king camped against Dora the second day, assaulting it continually, and making engines, by which means he shut up Tryphon, that he could neither go out nor in.
και απεστειλεν αυτω σιμων δισχιλιους ανδρας εκλεκτους συμμαχησαι αυτω και αργυριον και χρυσιον και σκευη ικανα26 At that time Simon sent him two thousand chosen men to aid him; silver also, and gold, and much armour.
και ουκ ηβουλετο αυτα δεξασθαι αλλα ηθετησεν παντα οσα συνεθετο αυτω το προτερον και ηλλοτριουτο αυτω27 Nevertheless he would not receive them, but brake all the covenants which he had made with him afore, and became strange unto him.
και απεστειλεν προς αυτον αθηνοβιον ενα των φιλων αυτου κοινολογησομενον αυτω λεγων υμεις κατακρατειτε της ιοππης και γαζαρων και της ακρας της εν ιερουσαλημ πολεις της βασιλειας μου28 Furthermore he sent unto him Athenobius, one of his friends, to commune with him, and say, Ye withhold Joppa and Gazera; with the tower that is in Jerusalem, which are cities of my realm.
τα ορια αυτων ηρημωσατε και εποιησατε πληγην μεγαλην επι της γης και εκυριευσατε τοπων πολλων εν τη βασιλεια μου29 The borders thereof ye have wasted, and done great hurt in the land, and got the dominion of many places within my kingdom.
νυν ουν παραδοτε τας πολεις ας κατελαβεσθε και τους φορους των τοπων ων κατεκυριευσατε εκτος των οριων της ιουδαιας30 Now therefore deliver the cities which ye have taken, and the tributes of the places, whereof ye have gotten dominion without the borders of Judea:
ει δε μη δοτε αντ' αυτων πεντακοσια ταλαντα αργυριου και της καταφθορας ης κατεφθαρκατε και των φορων των πολεων αλλα ταλαντα πεντακοσια ει δε μη παραγενομενοι εκπολεμησομεν υμας31 Or else give me for them five hundred talents of silver; and for the harm that ye have done, and the tributes of the cities, other five hundred talents: if not, we will come and fight against you
και ηλθεν αθηνοβιος ο φιλος του βασιλεως εις ιερουσαλημ και ειδεν την δοξαν σιμωνος και κυλικειον μετα χρυσωματων και αργυρωματων και παραστασιν ικανην και εξιστατο και απηγγειλεν αυτω τους λογους του βασιλεως32 So Athenobius the king's friend came to Jerusalem: and when he saw the glory of Simon, and the cupboard of gold and silver plate, and his great attendance, he was astonished, and told him the king's message.
και αποκριθεις σιμων ειπεν αυτω ουτε γην αλλοτριαν ειληφαμεν ουτε αλλοτριων κεκρατηκαμεν αλλα της κληρονομιας των πατερων ημων υπο δε εχθρων ημων ακριτως εν τινι καιρω κατεκρατηθη33 Then answered Simon, and said unto him, We have neither taken other men's land, nor holden that which appertaineth to others, but the inheritance of our fathers, which our enemies had wrongfully in possession a certain time.
ημεις δε καιρον εχοντες αντεχομεθα της κληρονομιας των πατερων ημων34 Wherefore we, having opportunity, hold the inheritance of our fathers.
περι δε ιοππης και γαζαρων ων αιτεις αυται εποιουν εν τω λαω πληγην μεγαλην και την χωραν ημων τουτων δωσομεν ταλαντα εκατον35 And whereas thou demandest Joppa and Gazera, albeit they did great harm unto the people in our country, yet will we give thee an hundred talents for them. Hereunto Athenobius answered him not a word;
και ουκ απεκριθη αυτω λογον απεστρεψεν δε μετα θυμου προς τον βασιλεα και απηγγειλεν αυτω τους λογους τουτους και την δοξαν σιμωνος και παντα οσα ειδεν και ωργισθη ο βασιλευς οργην μεγαλην36 But returned in a rage to the king, and made report unto him of these speeches, and of the glory of Simon, and of all that he had seen: whereupon the king was exceeding wroth.
τρυφων δε εμβας εις πλοιον εφυγεν εις ορθωσιαν37 In the mean time fled Tryphon by ship unto Orthosias.
και κατεστησεν ο βασιλευς τον κενδεβαιον επιστρατηγον της παραλιας και δυναμεις πεζικας και ιππικας εδωκεν αυτω38 Then the king made Cendebeus captain of the sea coast, and gave him an host of footmen and horsemen,
και ενετειλατο αυτω παρεμβαλλειν κατα προσωπον της ιουδαιας και ενετειλατο αυτω οικοδομησαι την κεδρων και οχυρωσαι τας πυλας και οπως πολεμη τον λαον ο δε βασιλευς εδιωκε τον τρυφωνα39 And commanded him to remove his host toward Judea; also he commanded him to build up Cedron, and to fortify the gates, and to war against the people; but as for the king himself, he pursued Tryphon.
και παρεγενηθη κενδεβαιος εις ιαμνειαν και ηρξατο του ερεθιζειν τον λαον και εμβατευειν εις την ιουδαιαν και αιχμαλωτιζειν τον λαον και φονευειν40 So Cendebeus came to Jamnia and began to provoke the people and to invade Judea, and to take the people prisoners, and slay them.
και ωκοδομησεν την κεδρων και απεταξεν εκει ιππεις και δυναμεις οπως εκπορευομενοι εξοδευωσιν τας οδους της ιουδαιας καθα συνεταξεν αυτω ο βασιλευς41 And when he had built up Cedrou, he set horsemen there, and an host of footmen, to the end that issuing out they might make outroads upon the ways of Judea, as the king had commanded him.
