DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
That thou wouldst rend the heavens, and wouldst come down: the mountains would melt away at thy presence.1 As when brushwood is set ablaze, or fire makes the water boil! Thus your name would be made known to your enemies and the nations would tremble before you,
They would melt as at the burning of fire, the waters would burn with fire, that thy name might be made known to thy enemies: that the nations might tremble at thy presence.2 While you wrought awesome deeds we could not hope for,
When thou shalt do wonderful things, we shall not bear them: thou didst come down, and at thy presence the mountains melted away.3 such as they had not heard of from of old. No ear has ever heard, no eye ever seen, any God but you doing such deeds for those who wait for him.
From the beginning of the world they have not heard, nor perceived with the ears: the eye hath not seen, O God, besides thee, what things thou hast prepared for them that wait for thee.4 Would that you might meet us doing right, that we were mindful of you in our ways! Behold, you are angry, and we are sinful;
Thou hast met him that rejoiceth, and doth justice: in thy ways they shall remember thee: behold thou art angry, and we have sinned: in them we have been always, and we shall be saved.5 all of us have become like unclean men, all our good deeds are like polluted rags; We have all withered like leaves, and our guilt carries us away like the wind.
And we are all become as one unclean, and all our justices as the rag of a menstruous woman: and we have all fallen as a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.6 There is none who calls upon your name, who rouses himself to cling to you; For you have hidden your face from us and have delivered us up to our guilt.
There is none that calleth upon thy name: that riseth up, and taketh hold of thee: thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast crushed us in the hand of our iniquity.7 Yet, O LORD, you are our father; we are the clay and you the potter: we are all the work of your hands.
And now, O Lord, thou art our father, and we are clay: and thou art our maker, and we all are the works of thy hands.8 Be not so very angry, LORD, keep not our guilt forever in mind; look upon us, who are all your people.
Be not very angry, O Lord, and remember no longer our iniquity: behold, see we are all thy people.9 Your holy cities have become a desert, Zion is a desert, Jerusalem a waste.
The city of thy sanctuary is become a desert, Sion is made a desert, Jerusalem is desolate.10 Our holy and glorious temple in which our fathers praised you Has been burned with fire; all that was dear to us is laid waste.
The house of our holiness, and of our glory, where our fathers praised thee, is burnt with fire, and all our lovely things are turned into ruins.11 Can you hold back, O LORD, after all this? Can you remain silent, and afflict us so severely?
Wilt thou refrain thyself, O Lord, upon these things, wilt thou hold thy peace, and afflict us vehemently?
