DOUAI-RHEIMSEL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
He that loveth his son, frequently chastiseth him, that he may rejoice in his latter end, and not grope after the doors of his neighbours.1 El que ama a su hijo lo castiga asiduamente, para poder alegrarse de él en el futuro.
He that instructeth his son shall be praised in him, and shall glory in him in the midst of them of his household.2 El que educa bien a su hijo encontrará satisfacción en él y se sentirá orgulloso entre sus conocidos.
He that teacheth his son, maketh his enemy jealous, and in the midst of his friends he shall glory in him.3 El que instruye a su hijo dará envidia a su enemigo y se sentirá dichoso delante de sus amigos,
His father is dead, and he is as if he were not dead: for he hath left one behind him that is like himself.4 Muere el padre, y es como si no muriera, porque deja detrás de sí a uno igual a él.
While he lived he saw and rejoiced in him: and when he died he was not sorrowful, neither was he confounded before his enemies.5 Mientras vive, se alegra de verlo, y a su muerte, no siente ningún pesar:
For he left behind him a defender of his house against his enemies, and one that will requite kindness to his friends.6 deja a alguien que lo vengará de sus enemigos y devolverá los favores a sus amigos.
For the souls of his sons he shall bind up his wounds, and at every cry his bowels shall be troubled.7 El que mima a su hijo vendará sus heridas y a cada grito que dé, se le conmoverán las entrañas.
Un caballo sin domar se vuelve reacio, y un hijo consentido se vuelve insolente.
dummy verses inserted by amos9 Malcría a tu hijo, y te hará temblar; juega con él, y te llenará de tristeza.
Give thy son his way, and he shall make thee afraid: play with him, and he shall make thee sorrowful.10 No hagas bromas con él, para no sufrir con él ni rechinar tus dientes al final.
Laugh not with him, lest thou have sorrow, and at the last thy teeth be set on edge.11 No les des rienda suelta en su juventud,
Give him not liberty in his youth, and wink not at his devices.12 pégale sin temor mientras es niño, no sea que se vuelva rebelde y te desobedezca.
Bow down his neck while he is young, and beat his sides while he is a child, lest he grow stubborn, and regard thee not, and so be a sorrow of heart to thee.13 Educa a tu hijo y fórmalo bien, para que no tengas que soportar su desvergüenza.
Instruct thy son, and labour about him, lest his lewd behaviour be an offence to thee.14 Más vale pobre sano y vigoroso que rico lleno de achaques.
Better is a poor man who is sound, and strong of constitution, than a rich man who is weak and afflicted with evils.15 La salud y el vigor valen más que todo el oro y el cuerpo robusto, más que una inmensa fortuna.
Health of the soul in holiness of justice, is better then all gold and silver: and a sound body, than immense revenues.16 No hay mejor riqueza que la salud del cuerpo ni mayor felicidad que la alegría del corazón.
There is no riches above the riches of the health of the body: and there is no pleasure above the joy of the heart.17 Es preferible la muerte a una vida amarga y el descanso eterno a una enfermedad incurable.
Better is death than a bitter life: and everlasting rest, than continual sickness.18 Manjares derramados sobre una boca cerrada son los alimentos depositados sobre una tumba:
Good things that are hidden in a mouth that is shut, are as masses of meat set about a grave.19 ¿de qué le sirve al ídolo la ofrenda si no puede comer ni gustar? Así pasa con el hombre perseguido por el Señor:
What good shall an offering do to an idol? for it can neither eat, nor smell:20 mira con sus ojos y lanza un suspiro, como un eunuco cuando abraza a una virgen.
So is he that is persecuted by the Lord, bearing the reward of his iniquity:21 No dejes que la tristeza se apodere de ti ni te atormentes con tus cavilaciones.
He seeth with his eyes, and groaneth, as an eunuch embracing a virgin, and sighing.22 Un corazón alegre es la vida del hombre y el gozo alarga el número de sus días.
Give not up thy soul to sadness, and afflict not thyself in thy own counsel.23 Vive ilusionado y consuela tu corazón, y aparta lejos de ti la tristeza, porque la tristeza fue la perdición de muchos y no se saca de ella ningún provecho.
The joyfulness of the heart, is the life of a man, and a never failing treasure of holiness: and the joy of a man is length of life.24 La envidia y la ira acortan la vida y las preocupaciones hacen envejecer antes de tiempo.
Have pity on thy own soul, pleasing God, and contain thyself: gather up thy heart in his holiness: and drive away sadness far from thee.25 Un hombre de corazón alegre tiene buen apetito y lo que come le hace provecho.
For sadness hath killed many, and there is no profit in it.
Envy and anger shorten a man's days, and pensiveness will bring old age before the time.
