1 The words of Ecclesiastes, the son of David, king of Jerusalem.	1 - Detti dell'Ecclesiaste, figliuolo di David, re di Gerusalemme.
2 Vanity of vanities, said Ecclesiastes vanity of vanities, and all is vanity.	2 Vanità delle vanità - dice l'Ecclesiaste - vanità delle vanità! e tutto è vanità.
3 What hath a man more of all his labour, that he taketh under the sun?	3 Che vantaggio ha l'uomo di tutta la sua fatica con cui si travaglia sotto il sole?
4 One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth standeth for ever.	4 Passa una generazione e ne succede un'altra, e la terra sussiste sempre.
5 The sun riseth, and goeth down, and returneth to his place: and there rising again,	5 Sorge il sole e tramontae s'affretta al suo posto, donde si leva ancora.
6 Maketh his round by the south, and turneth again to the north: the spirit goeth forward surveying all places round about, and returneth to his circuits.	6 S'avanza verso mezzodì e volge a settentrione[e] va intorno il vento, girando per ogni dove, e torna quindi sui suoi giri.
7 All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea doth not overflow: unto the place from whence the rivers come, they return, to flow again.	7 Tutti i fiumi sboccano nel mare e il mare non trabocca: al luogo donde i fiumi scaturiscono, ivi fan ritorno per rifluir novamente.
8 All things are hard: man cannot explain them by word. The eye is not filled with seeing, neither is the ear filled with hearing.	8 Ogni cosa è in travaglio, nè può l'uomo spiegarlo a parole: l'occhio non si sazia di vedere, nè mai è pieno l'orecchio d'ascoltare.
9 What is it that hath been? the same thing that shall be. What is it that hath been done? the same that shall be done.	9 [Eppure] che è ciò ch'è stato? quello stesso che sarà che è ciò ch'è accaduto? quello stesso che accadrà.
10 Nothing under the sun is new, neither is any man able to say: Behold this is new: for it hath already gone before in the ages that were before us.	10 Non c'è nulla di nuovo sotto il sole, nè alcuno può dire:«Guarda, questa cosa è nuova!», poichè essa esisteva già ne' tempi andati, prima di noi.
11 There is no remembrance of former things: nor indeed of those things which hereafter are to come, shall there be any remembrance with them that shall be in the latter end.	11 Non resta memoria delle cose antiche!ma neppur di quelle che son per accadere vi sarà ricordopresso quei che verran più tardi.
12 I Ecclesiastes was king over Israel in Jerusalem,	12 Io, l'Ecclesiaste, fui re d'Israele in Gerusalemme.
13 And I proposed in my mind to seek and search out wisely concerning all things that are done under the sun. This painful occupation hath God given to the children of men, to be exercised therein.	13 E mi detti con tutto l'animo a cercare ed esplorar per mezzo della sapienzatutto quanto si fa sotto il sole. Questa triste occupazioneDio ha dato agli uomini, perché si travaglino in essa!
14 I have seen all things that are done under the sun, and behold all is vanity, and vexation of spirit.	14 Tutto io vidi quel che si fa sotto il sole, ed ecco tutto è vanità e afflizione di spirito!
15 The perverse are hard to be corrected, and the number of fools is infinite.	15 I perversi difficilmente si raddrizzano, e degli stolti il numero è infinito.
16 I have spoken in my heart, saying: Behold I am become great, and have gone beyond all in wisdom, that were before me in Jerusalem: and my mind hath contemplated many things wisely, and I have learned.	16 Dissi in cuor mio: «Ecco ch'io son diventato grande, e ho sorpassato in sapienza quanti furon prima di me in Gerusalemme. Molte cose ha approfondito con sapienza la mente mia, e ho imparato [molto].
17 And I have given my heart to know prudence, and learning, and errors, and folly: and I have perceived that in these also there was labour, and vexation of spirit,	17 Ho applicato il mio cuore ad apprender la saggezza, e a conoscer l'insipienza e la stoltezza, e mi sono accorto che anche in questo è travaglio e afflizione di spirito».
18 Because In much wisdom there is much indignation: and he that addeth knowledge, addeth also labour.	18 Perchè in molta sapienza, molta inquietudine, e chi aumenta il sapere, aumenta il travaglio.
