DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW JERUSALEM
And the earth was of one tongue, and of the same speech.1 The whole world spoke the same language, with the same vocabulary.
And when they removed from the east, they found a plain in the land of Sennaar, and dwelt in it.2 Now, as people moved eastwards they found a valley in the land of Shinar where they settled.
And each one said to his neighbour: Come, let us make brick, and bake them of stones, and slime instead of mortar.3 They said to one another, 'Come, let us make bricks and bake them in the fire.' For stone they usedbricks, and for mortar they used bitumen.
And they said: Come, let us make a city and a tower, the top whereof may reach to heaven: and let us make our name famous before we be scattered abroad into all lands.4 'Come,' they said, 'let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top reaching heaven. Let us makea name for ourselves, so that we do not get scattered all over the world.'
And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of Adam were building.5 Now Yahweh came down to see the city and the tower that the people had built.
And he said: Behold, it is one people, and all have one tongue: and they have begun to do this, neither will they leave off from their designs, till they accomplish them in deed.6 'So they are al a single people with a single language!' said Yahweh. 'This is only the start of theirundertakings! Now nothing they plan to do wil be beyond them.
Come ye, therefore, let us go down, and there may not understand one another's speech.7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language there, so that they cannot understand one another.'
And so the Lord scattered them from that place into all lands, and they ceased to build the city.8 Yahweh scattered them thence all over the world, and they stopped building the city.
And therefore the name thereof was called Babel, because there the language of the whole earth was confounded: and from thence the Lord scattered them abroad upon the face of all countries.9 That is why it was cal ed Babel, since there Yahweh confused the language of the whole world, andfrom there Yahweh scattered them al over the world.
