DIODATI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 IN quel tempo, Erode il tetrarca udì la fama di Gesù. E disse ai suoi servitori:	1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard about the reputation of Jesus
2 Costui è Giovanni Battista; egli è risuscitato da’ morti; e però le potenze operano in lui.	2 and said to his court, 'This is John the Baptist himself; he has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.'
3 Perciocchè Erode avea preso Giovanni, e l’avea messo ne’ legami, e l’avea incarcerato, a motivo di Erodiada, moglie di Filippo, suo fratello.	3 Now it was Herod who had arrested John, chained him up and put him in prison because of Herodias,his brother Philip's wife.
4 Perciocchè Giovanni gli diceva: Ei non ti è lecito di ritenere costei.	4 For John had told him, 'It is against the Law for you to have her.'
5 E volendolo far morire, pure temette il popolo; perciocchè essi lo teneano per profeta.	5 He had wanted to kil him but was afraid of the people, who regarded John as a prophet.
6 Ora, celebrandosi il giorno della natività di Erode, la figliuola di Erodiada avea ballato ivi in mezzo, ed era piaciuta ad Erode.	6 Then, during the celebrations for Herod's birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before thecompany and so delighted Herod
7 Onde egli le promise, con giuramento, di darle tutto ciò ch’ella chiederebbe.	7 that he promised on oath to give her anything she asked.
8 Ed ella, indotta prima da sua madre, disse: Dammi qui in un piatto la testa di Giovanni Battista.	8 Prompted by her mother she said, 'Give me John the Baptist's head, here, on a dish.'
9 E il re se ne attristò; ma pure, per li giuramenti, e per rispetto di coloro ch’erano con lui a tavola, comandò che le fosse data.	9 The king was distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he ordered it to begiven her,
10 E mandò a far decapitar Giovanni Battista in prigione.	10 and sent and had John beheaded in the prison.
11 E la sua testa fu portata in un piatto, e data alla fanciulla; ed ella la portò a sua madre.	11 The head was brought in on a dish and given to the girl, who took it to her mother.
12 E i discepoli d’esso vennero, e tolsero il corpo, e lo seppellirono; poi vennero, e rapportarono il fatto a Gesù	12 John's disciples came and took the body and buried it; then they went off to tell Jesus.
13 E GESÙ, udito ciò, si ritrasse di là sopra una navicella, in un luogo deserto, in disparte. E la turbe uditolo, lo seguitarono a piè, dalle città.	13 When Jesus received this news he withdrew by boat to a lonely place where they could be bythemselves. But the crowds heard of this and, leaving the towns, went after him on foot.
14 E Gesù, essendo smontato dalla navicella, vide una gran moltitudine, e fu mosso a compassione inverso loro, e sanò gl’infermi d’infra loro.	14 So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them and healed their sick.
15 E, facendosi sera, i suoi discepoli gli si accostarono, dicendo: Questo luogo è deserto, e l’ora è già passata; licenzia le turbe, acciocchè vadano per le castella, e si comperino da mangiare.	15 When evening came, the disciples went to him and said, 'This is a lonely place, and time has slippedby; so send the people away, and they can go to the vil ages to buy themselves some food.'
16 Ma Gesù disse loro: Non han bisogno di andarsene; date lor voi da mangiare.	16 Jesus replied, 'There is no need for them to go: give them something to eat yourselves.'
17 Ed essi gli dissero: Noi non abbiam qui se non cinque pani, e due pesci.	17 But they answered, 'All we have with us is five loaves and two fish.'
18 Ed egli disse: Recatemeli qua.	18 So he said, 'Bring them here to me.'
19 E comandò che le turbe si coricassero sopra l’erba; poi prese i cinque pani, e i due pesci; e levati gli occhi al cielo, fece la benedizione; e, rotti i pani, li diede a’ discepoli, e i discepoli alle turbe.	19 He gave orders that the people were to sit down on the grass; then he took the five loaves and thetwo fish, raised his eyes to heaven and said the blessing. And breaking the loaves he handed them to hisdisciples, who gave them to the crowds.
20 E tutti mangiarono, e furon saziati; poi i discepoli levarono l’avanzo de’ pezzi, e ve ne furono dodici corbelli pieni.	20 They al ate as much as they wanted, and they col ected the scraps left over, twelve baskets full.
21 Or coloro che aveano mangiato erano intorno a cinquemila uomini, oltre alle donne ed i fanciulli	21 Now about five thousand men had eaten, to say nothing of women and children.
22 INCONTANENTE appresso, Gesù costrinse i suoi discepoli a montare in su la navicella, ed a passare innanzi a lui all’altra riva, mentre egli licenziava le turbe.	22 And at once he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side while he sentthe crowds away.
23 Ed egli, dopo aver licenziate le turbe, salì in sul monte in disparte, per orare. E, fattosi sera, era quivi tutto solo.	23 After sending the crowds away he went up into the hil s by himself to pray. When evening came, hewas there alone,
24 E la navicella era già in mezzo del mare, travagliata dalle onde; perciocchè il vento era contrario.	24 while the boat, by now some furlongs from land, was hard pressed by rough waves, for there was ahead-wind.
25 E nella quarta vigilia della notte, Gesù se ne andò a loro, camminando sopra il mare.	25 In the fourth watch of the night he came towards them, walking on the sea,
26 E i discepoli, vedendolo camminar sopra il mare, si turbarono, dicendo: Egli è un fantasma. E di paura gridarono.	26 and when the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. 'It is a ghost,' they said, andcried out in fear.
27 Ma subito Gesù parlò loro, dicendo: Rassicuratevi; sono io, non temiate.	27 But at once Jesus cal ed out to them, saying, 'Courage! It's me! Don't be afraid.'
28 E Pietro, rispondendogli, disse: Signore, se sei tu, comanda che io venga a te sopra le acque.	28 It was Peter who answered. 'Lord,' he said, 'if it is you, tel me to come to you across the water.'
29 Ed egli disse: Vieni. E Pietro, smontato dalla navicella, camminava sopra le acque, per venire a Gesù.	29 Jesus said, 'Come.' Then Peter got out of the boat and started walking towards Jesus across thewater,
30 Ma, vedendo il vento forte, ebbe paura; e, cominciando a sommergersi, gridò, dicendo: Signore, salvami.	30 but then noticing the wind, he took fright and began to sink. 'Lord,' he cried, 'save me!'
31 E incontanente Gesù distese la mano, e lo prese, e gli disse: O uomo di poca fede, perchè hai dubitato?	31 Jesus put out his hand at once and held him. 'You have so little faith,' he said, 'why did you doubt?'
32 Poi, quando furono entrati nella navicella, il vento si acquetò.	32 And as they got into the boat the wind dropped.
33 E coloro ch’erano nella navicella vennero, e l’adorarono, dicendo: Veramente tu sei il Figliuol di Dio	33 The men in the boat bowed down before him and said, 'Truly, you are the Son of God.'
34 Poi, essendo passati all’altra riva, vennero nella contrada di Gennesaret.	34 Having made the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret.
35 E gli uomini di quel luogo, avendolo riconosciuto, mandarono a farlo sapere per tutta quella contrada circonvicina; e gli presentarono tutti I malati;	35 When the local people recognised him they spread the news through the whole neighbourhood andtook al that were sick to him,
36 e lo pregavano che potessero sol toccare il lembo della sua vesta; e tutti quelli che lo toccarono furono sanati	36 begging him just to let them touch the fringe of his cloak. And al those who touched it were saved.
