1 Jonathan, le fils de Saül, dit au jeune homme qui portait ses armes: “Allons et passons vers le poste des Philistins qui est de l’autre côté.” Mais il ne dit rien à son père.	1 One day, Jonathan son of Saul said to his armour-bearer, 'Come on, let us go across to the Philistineoutpost over on the other side.' But he did not inform his father.
2 Or Saül siégeait à la frontière de Guibéa, sous le grenadier qui est près de l’aire, et avec lui se tenaient environ 600 hommes.	2 Saul was on the outskirts of Geba, sitting under the pomegranate tree that stands near the threshing-floor; the force with him numbered about six hundred men.
3 Ahiya, fils d’Ahitoub, frère d’Ikabod, fils de Pinhas, fils d’Héli, qui était prêtre de Yahvé à Silo, portait l’éphod. Personne dans la troupe ne remarqua que Jonathan était parti.	3 Ahijah son of Ahitub, brother of Ichabod, son of Phinehas, son of Eli, the priest of Yahweh at Shiloh,was carrying the ephod. The force did not know that Jonathan had left.
4 De chaque côté du défilé que Jonathan cherchait à traverser pour atteindre le poste philistin, il y avait un rocher: l’un était le rocher de Bosès et l’autre s’appelait Senné.	4 In the pass that Jonathan was trying to cross to reach the Philistine outpost, there is a rocky spur onone side and a rocky spur on the other; one is cal ed Bozez, the other Seneh.
5 Le premier rocher se trouve au nord, en face de Mikmas, le second au sud face à Guéba.	5 The first spur stands to the north facing Michmash, the other to the south facing Geba.
6 Jonathan dit au jeune homme qui portait ses armes: “Allons et traversons vers le poste de ces incirconcis. Peut-être Yahvé fera-t-il quelque chose pour nous, car rien n’arrête Yahvé. Qu’on soit beaucoup ou très peu, il peut toujours délivrer.”	6 Jonathan said to his armour-bearer, 'Come on, let us go across to these uncircumcised people'soutpost; perhaps Yahweh wil do something for us, for Yahweh is free to grant deliverance through a few men,just as much as through many.'
7 Le jeune homme répondit: “Fais à ton idée pour le mieux, je suis avec toi et tu décides.”	7 His armour-bearer replied, 'Do exactly as you think. I am with you; our hearts are as one.'
8 Jonathan lui dit: “Écoute, nous passerons vers ces hommes et nous nous montrerons à eux.	8 Jonathan then said, 'Look, we will go across to these people and let ourselves be seen.
9 S’ils nous disent: Arrêtez-vous, attendez que nous venions!, nous resterons sur place et nous ne monterons pas vers eux.	9 If they say, "Do not move until we come to you," we shal stay where we are and not go up to them.
10 Mais s’ils nous disent: Montez vers nous!, nous monterons. Ce sera le signe que Yahvé les a livrés entre nos mains.”	10 But if they say, "Come up to us," we shal go up, for that wil be the sign for us that Yahweh has given them into our power.'
11 Ils se montrèrent donc tous les deux au poste des Philistins. Ceux-ci pensèrent: “Voici des Hébreux qui sortent des trous où ils se cachaient.”	11 When the two of them let themselves be seen by the Philistine outpost, the Philistines said, 'Look,the Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have been hiding.'
12 Les hommes du poste s’adressèrent à Jonathan et au jeune homme qui portait ses armes, ils leur dirent: “Montez vers nous, nous avons quelque chose à vous apprendre.” Jonathan dit à son compagnon: “Monte derrière moi, car Yahvé les a livrés entre les mains d’Israël.”	12 The men of the outpost then hailed Jonathan and his armour-bearer. 'Come up to us,' they said, 'wehave something to tel you.' Jonathan then said to his armour-bearer, 'Fol ow me up; Yahweh has given theminto the power of Israel.'
13 Jonathan monta en escaladant avec les mains et les pieds et son compagnon le suivit. Les Philistins tombaient devant Jonathan et son compagnon les achevait derrière lui.	13 Jonathan clambered up on hands and feet, with his armour-bearer behind him; the Philistines fel atJonathan's onslaught, and his armour-bearer, coming behind, finished them off.
14 Jonathan et son compagnon firent là un premier massacre: une vingtaine d’hommes tombèrent sur un terrain qui mesurait à peine un arpent.	14 This first kil ing made by Jonathan and his armour-bearer accounted for about twenty men . . .
15 La terreur se répandit dans le camp, dans la campagne et dans tout le peuple. Le poste et la troupe des guerriers furent saisis de peur eux aussi, la terre trembla, c’était comme une terreur venant de Dieu.	15 There was panic in the camp, in the field and throughout the army; outpost and raiding company toowere panic-stricken; the earth quaked: it was a panic from Yahweh.
16 Les sentinelles de Saül qui étaient à Guibéa de Benjamin virent que le camp des Philistins se dispersait de tous côtés.	16 Saul's look-out men in Geba of Benjamin could see the camp scattering in all directions.
17 Alors Saül dit à ceux qui étaient avec lui: “Passez en revue le peuple et voyez qui est parti de chez nous.” On passa le peuple en revue et il ne manquait que Jonathan et le jeune homme qui portait ses armes.	17 Saul then said to the force that was with him, 'Cal the roll and see who has left us.' So they cal edthe rol , and Jonathan and his armour-bearer were missing.
18 Saül dit à Ahiya: “Apporte l’éphod.” C’était lui en effet qui portait l’éphod en présence d’Israël.	18 Saul then said to Ahijah, 'Bring the ephod,' since he was the man who carried the ephod in Israel.
19 Mais pendant que Saül parlait au prêtre, la confusion allait en grandissant dans le camp des Philistins. Finalement Saül dit au prêtre: “Retire ta main.”	19 But while Saul was speaking to the priest, the turmoil in the Philistine camp grew worse and worse;and Saul said to the priest, 'Withdraw your hand.'
20 Puis Saül et toutes les troupes se rassemblèrent et arrivèrent au lieu du combat. Il y avait là une énorme panique: ils tiraient leur épée les uns contre les autres.	20 Saul and the whole force with him then formed up and advanced to where the fighting was going on:and there they al were, drawing their swords on one another in wild confusion.
21 Les Hébreux qui s’étaient mis au service des Philistins et qui étaient montés avec eux au camp, se retournèrent pour se joindre aux Israélites qui étaient avec Saül et Jonathan.	21 Those Hebrews who had earlier taken service with the Philistines and had accompanied them intocamp, now defected to the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.
22 Tous les Israélites qui s’étaient cachés dans la montagne d’Éphraïm se lancèrent à leur tour à la poursuite des Philistins qui s’enfuyaient devant eux.	22 Similarly, all those Israelites who had been hiding in the highlands of Ephraim, hearing that thePhilistines were on the run, chased after them and joined in the fight.
23 Ce jour-là Yahvé donna la victoire à Israël. La bataille s’étendit au-delà de Beth-Aven.	23 That day Yahweh gave Israel the victory. The fighting reached the other side of Beth-Horon.
24 Au moment où les Israélites étaient serrés de tous côtés, Saül avait déclaré solennellement devant tout le peuple: “Maudit soit celui qui mangera quelque chose avant le soir, avant que j’aie tiré vengeance de mes ennemis!” Et tout le peuple était resté à jeun.	24 As the men of Israel were hard pressed that day, Saul pronounced this imprecation over the people,'A curse on anyone who eats food before evening, before I have taken revenge on my enemies!' So none of thepeople so much as tasted food.
25 Or on trouva du miel sur le terrain.	25 Now there was a honeycomb out in the open.
26 Le peuple entra dans la forêt et vit ce miel qui coulait. Nul d’entre eux ne porta la main à sa bouche, car le peuple se rappelait la malédiction prononcée par le roi.	26 The people came to the honeycomb, the honey was dripping out, but no one put a hand to his mouth,the people being in awe of the oath.
27 Mais Jonathan n’avait pas entendu le serment de son père; il avança le bout de son bâton, le plongea dans le rayon de miel et le ramena à sa bouche: ses yeux s’éclaircirent.	27 Jonathan, however, not having heard his father bind the people with the oath, reached with the endof the stick which he was carrying, thrust it into the honeycomb and put it to his mouth; whereupon his eyes grewbrighter.
28 Quelqu’un de l’armée lui dit: “Ton père a déclaré solennellement devant tout le peuple: Maudit soit celui qui mangera quelque chose aujourd’hui.”	28 One of the people then spoke up. 'Your father', he said, 'has bound the people with this oath: "Acurse on anyone who eats anything today." '
29 Jonathan répondit: “Mon père a fait bien du tort au pays; regardez donc comme mes yeux se sont éclaircis depuis que j’ai goûté un peu de miel.	29 'My father has brought trouble on the country,' Jonathan replied. 'See how much brighter my eyes arefor having eaten this mouthful of honey.
30 Si aujourd’hui tout le peuple avait pris sur le butin de ses ennemis de quoi manger, la défaite des Philistins aurait sûrement été plus grande.”	30 By the same token, if the people had been allowed to eat some of the booty which they had capturedfrom the enemy today, would not the defeat of the Philistines have been all the greater?'
31 Ce jour-là on écrasa les Philistins de Mikmas jusqu’à Ayyalon, mais le peuple était à bout de forces.	31 That day the Philistines were beaten from Michmash all the way to Aijalon, until the people wereutterly exhausted.
32 Le peuple alors se jeta sur le butin, il prit du petit bétail, des bœufs, des veaux, les immola à même la terre et se mit à manger au-dessus du sang.	32 The people flung themselves on the booty and, taking sheep, bul ocks and calves, slaughtered themthere on the ground and ate them with the blood.
33 On avertit Saül: “Le peuple est en train de pécher contre Yahvé: les gens mangent la viande au-dessus du sang.” Saül s’écria: “Vous êtes tous des infidèles! Roulez ici une grande pierre.”	33 Saul was informed, 'The people are sinning against Yahweh by eating with the blood!' He said, 'Youhave not kept faith! Roll me a large stone here!'
34 Puis Saül ajouta: “Dispersez-vous au milieu du peuple et dites-leur que chacun amène ici son bœuf ou son mouton. Vous les immolerez et vous les mangerez, mais ne péchez pas contre Yahvé en mangeant la viande au-dessus du sang.” Chacun amena donc ce qu’il avait sous la main ce soir-là: ils firent l’immolation en ce lieu.	34 Saul then said, 'Scatter among the people and say, "Everyone is to bring his bul ock or his sheep tome here." You wil slaughter them here and eat, and not sin against Yahweh by eating with the blood.' Eachindividual brought what he happened to have that night, and they al slaughtered in the same place.
35 Saül y construisit un autel à Yahvé, ce fut le premier autel qu’il lui construisit.	35 Saul built an altar to Yahweh; it was the first altar he had built to Yahweh.
36 Saül dit encore: “Descendons à la poursuite des Philistins pendant la nuit, pillons-les jusqu’à ce que brille l’aube et ne laissons personne en vie parmi eux.” On lui répondit: “Fais à ton idée!” Le prêtre dit alors: “Il nous faut consulter Dieu.”	36 Saul said, 'Let us go down under cover of dark and plunder the Philistines until dawn; we shal notleave one of them alive.' 'Do whatever you think right,' they replied. But the priest said, 'Let us approach Godhere.'
37 Saül consulta Dieu: “Dois-je descendre à la poursuite des Philistins? Les livreras-tu entre les mains d’Israël?” Mais ce jour-là Dieu ne lui répondit pas.	37 Saul consulted God, 'Shall I go down and pursue the Philistines? Will you hand them over to Israel?'But he gave him no reply that day.
38 Alors Saül dit: “Approchez vous tous, chefs du peuple, regardez et vérifiez en quoi a consisté le péché.	38 Saul then said, 'Come forward, al you leaders of the people; consider carefully where today's sinmay lie;
39 Je le jure par la vie de Yahvé qui vient de délivrer Israël: même si c’est mon fils Jonathan qui a péché, il mourra.” Dans tout le peuple nul ne lui répondit.	39 for as Yahweh lives who gives victory to Israel, even if the sin lies with Jonathan my son, he shal beput to death.' But not one out of al the people answered.
40 Alors il dit à tout Israël: “Vous, vous serez d’un côté, moi et mon fils Jonathan, nous nous mettrons de l’autre.” Le peuple dit à Saül: “Fais à ton idée!”	40 He then said to al Israel, 'Stand on one side, and I and Jonathan my son wil stand on the other.' Andthe people replied to Saul, 'Do as you think right.'
41 Saül demanda à Yahvé: “Dieu d’Israël, pourquoi n’as-tu pas répondu à ton serviteur aujourd’hui? Si cette faute se trouve en moi ou en mon fils Jonathan, donne les Ourim. Mais si cette faute se trouve du côté de ton peuple Israël, donne les Toumim.” Jonathan et Saül furent désignés tandis que le peuple était épargné.	41 Saul then said, 'Yahweh, God of Israel, why did you not answer your servant today? Yahweh, God ofIsrael, if the fault lies with me or with my son Jonathan, give urim: if the fault lies with your people Israel, givethummim.' Jonathan and Saul were indicated and the people went free.
42 Saül dit: “Jetez le sort entre moi et mon fils Jonathan.” Et Jonathan fut désigné.	42 Saul said, 'Cast the lot between me and my son Jonathan,' and Jonathan was indicated.
43 Alors Saül dit à Jonathan: “Dis-moi ce que tu as fait.” Jonathan répondit: “J’ai simplement goûté un peu de miel au bout du bâton que j’avais dans la main, mais je suis prêt à mourir.”	43 'I only tasted a mouthful of honey off the end of the stick which I was carrying. But I am ready to die.'
44 Saül répondit: “Que Dieu me maudisse, et me maudisse encore si tu ne meurs pas, Jonathan!”	44 Saul said, 'May God bring unnameable il s on me, and worse ones too, if you do not die, Jonathan!'
45 Mais le peuple dit à Saül: “Jonathan va-t-il mourir, lui qui a donné une si grande victoire à Israël? Il n’en est pas question! Par la vie de Yahvé, il ne tombera pas à terre un seul des cheveux de sa tête, car c’est avec Dieu qu’il a agi en ce jour.” C’est ainsi que le peuple sauva la tête de Jonathan.	45 But the people said to Saul, 'Must Jonathan die after winning this great victory for Israel? We wilnever al ow that! As Yahweh lives, not one hair of his head shal fal to the ground, for his deeds today havebeen done with the help of God.' And so the people ransomed Jonathan and he was not put to death.
46 Saül cessa de poursuivre les Philistins; il remonta cependant que les Philistins s’en retournaient chez eux.	46 Saul decided not to pursue the Philistines, and the Philistines retired to their own territory.
47 Saül avait affermi sa royauté sur Israël; il combattit contre tous ses ennemis: Moab, les fils d’Ammon, Édom, les rois de Soba et les Philistins. Partout où il se tournait, il était vainqueur.	47 Saul consolidated his rule over Israel and made war on al his enemies on al fronts: on Moab, theAmmonites, Edom, the king of Zobah and the Philistines; whichever way he turned, he was victorious.
48 Il écrasa Amalec au cours d’une grande expédition, et il délivra Israël des attaques des pillards.	48 He did great deeds of valour; he defeated the Amalekites and delivered Israel from those who usedto pil age him.
49 Les fils de Saül étaient Jonathan, Ichyo et Malki-Choua. Il eut deux filles, l’aînée s’appelait Mérob et la seconde Mikal.	49 Saul's sons were: Jonathan, Ishvi and Malchishua. The names of his two daughters were: the elder,Merab, and the younger, Michal.
50 La femme de Saül était Ahinoam, fille d’Ahimaas. Le chef de son armée se nommait Abner, il était fils de Ner, l’oncle de Saül.	50 The name of Saul's wife was Ahinoam daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of his army commander wasAbner son of Ner, Saul's uncle.
51 Kich, le père de Saül, et Ner, le père d’Abner, étaient fils d’Abiel. 52 Durant toute la vie de Saül on eut une guerre acharnée contre les Philistins. Chaque fois que Saül voyait un homme solide et courageux, il l’attachait à son service.	51 Kish father of Saul, and Ner father of Abner were the sons of Abiel.
	52 There was fierce warfare with the Philistines throughout Saul's life. Any strong or valiant man whocaught Saul's eye, he recruited into his service.
