1 Josué convoqua les gens de Ruben, de Gad et de la demi-tribu de Manassé,	1 At the same time Josue called the Rubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasses,
2 et leur dit: “Vous avez obéi à tout ce que Moïse, serviteur de Yahvé, vous a ordonné, et vous m’avez obéi dans tout ce que je vous ai commandé.	2 And said to them: You have done all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you: you have also obeyed me in all things,
3 Bien du temps a passé, mais vous n’avez pas abandonné vos frères jusqu’à ce jour, et vous avez fidèlement observé le commandement de Yahvé votre Dieu.	3 Neither have you left your brethren this long time, until this present day, keeping the commandment of the Lord your God.
4 Maintenant que Yahvé votre Dieu a donné le repos à vos frères comme il l’avait dit, retournez et regagnez vos tentes, dans le pays qui vous appartient et que Moïse, serviteur de Yahvé, vous a donné de l’autre côté du Jourdain.	4 Therefore as the Lord your God hath given your brethren rest and peace, as he promised: return, and go to your dwellings, and to the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you beyond the Jordan:
5 Ayez soin seulement de mettre en pratique les commandements et les lois que Moïse, le serviteur de Yahvé, vous a prescrits. Aimez Yahvé votre Dieu, marchez dans toutes ses voies, gardez ses commandements, attachez-vous à lui et servez-le de tout votre cœur et de toute votre âme.”	5 Yet so that you observe attentively, and in work fulfil the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you: that you love the Lord your God, and walk in all his ways, and keep all his commandments, and cleave to him, and serve him with all your heart, and with all your soul.
6 Josué les bénit, puis il les renvoya et ils retournèrent à leurs tentes.	6 And Josue blessed them, and sent them away, and they returned to their dwellings.
7 Moïse avait donné le Bashan à une moitié de la tribu de Manassé; à l’autre moitié de la tribu, Josué donna un héritage parmi ses frères, à l’ouest du Jourdain. En les renvoyant à leurs tentes, Josué les bénit.	7 Now to half the tribe of Manasses, Moses had given a possession in Basan: and therefore to the half that remained, Josue gave a lot among the rest of their brethren beyond the Jordan to the west. And when he sent them away to their dwellings and had blessed them,
8 Il leur dit: “Retournez à vos tentes chargés de richesses! Que de troupeaux, d’or, d’argent, de bronze, de fer et de vêtements! Partagez les dépouilles de vos ennemis avec vos frères.”	8 He said to them : With much substance and riches, you return to your settlements, with silver and gold, brass and iron, and variety of raiment: divide the prey of your enemies with your brethren.
9 Les gens de Ruben, de Gad et de la demi-tribu de Manassé quittèrent les Israélites à Silo, dans le pays de Canaan. Ils regagnèrent le pays de Galaad, puisque c’était l’héritage qu’ils avaient reçu comme Yahvé l’avait ordonné par Moïse.	9 So the children of Ruben, and the children of Gad, and the half tribe of Manasses returned, and parted from the children of Israel in Silo, which is in Chanaan, to go into Galaad the land of their possession, which they had obtained according to the commandment of the Lord by the hand of Moses.
10 Lorsqu’ils arrivèrent aux environs du Jourdain qui font partie du pays de Canaan, les gens de Ruben, de Gad et de la demi-tribu de Manassé construisirent un autel au bord du Jourdain. C’était un autel de taille impressionnante.	10 And when they were come to the banks of the Jordan, in the land of Chanaan, they built an altar immensely great near the Jordan.
11 On vint en avertir les Israélites: “Voilà que les gens de Ruben, de Gad et de la demi-tribu de Manassé ont construit un autel face au pays de Canaan, dans les environs du Jourdain, du côté des Israélites.”	11 And when the children of Israel had heard of it, and certain messengers had brought them an account that the children of Ruben, and of Cad, and the half tribe of Manasses had built an altar in the land of Chanaan, upon the banks of the Jordan, over against the children of Israel:
12 Alors toute la communauté d’Israël se réunit à Silo pour monter contre eux et leur faire la guerre	12 They all assembled in Silo, to go up and fight against them.
13 Les Israélites envoyèrent aux gens de Ruben, de Gad et de la demi-tribu de Manassé, dans le pays de Galaad, Pinhas, fils d’Éléazar le prêtre,	13 And in the mean time they sent to them into the land of Galaad, Phinees the son of Eleazar the priest,
14 et 10 chefs avec lui: un chef de clan pour chacune des tribus d’Israël.	14 And ten princes with him, one of every tribe.
15 Arrivés chez les gens de Ruben, de Gad et de la demi-tribu de Manassé, au pays de Galaad, ils leur dirent:	15 Who came to the children of Ruben, and of Gad, and the half tribe of Manasses, into the land of Galaad, and said to them:
16 “Voici ce que dit la communauté de Yahvé: Quelle infidélité avez-vous commise envers le Dieu d’Israël! Vous voulez donc vous détourner de Yahvé? En bâtissant un autel vous vous révoltez contre Yahvé!	16 Thus saith all the people of the Lord: What meaneth this transgression? Why have you forsaken the Lord the God of Israel, building a sacrilegious altar, and revolting from the worship of him?
17 Le crime de Péor ne suffit-il pas? Nous n’en sommes pas encore guéris après le fléau qui a frappé toute la communauté de Yahvé.	17 Is it a small thing to you that you sinned with Beelphegor, and the stain of that crime remaineth in us to this day? and many of the people perished.
18 Si vous vous révoltez aujourd’hui contre Yahvé, demain il se mettra en colère contre toute la communauté d’Israël.	18 And you have forsaken the Lord to day, and to morrow his wrath will rage against all Israel.
19 Si le pays que vous possédez est impur à vos yeux, venez dans le pays qui est l’héritage de Yahvé, là où il a établi sa Demeure. Vous y recevrez un héritage au milieu de nous. Mais ne vous révoltez pas contre Yahvé, ne vous révoltez pas contre nous en bâtissant un autel autre que celui de Yahvé notre Dieu.	19 But if you think the land of your possession to be unclean, pass over to the land wherein is the tabernacle of the Lord, and dwell among us: only depart not from the Lord, and from our society, by building an altar beside the altar of the Lord our God.
20 Rappelez-vous l’infidélité d’Akan, fils de Zérah, à propos de l’anathème: la colère de Yahvé a frappé toute la communauté d’Israël, et il ne fut pas le seul à mourir à cause de son crime.”	20 Did not Achan the son of Zare transgress the commandment of the Lord, and his wrath lay upon all the people of Israel? And he was but one man, and would to God he alone had perished in his wickedness.
21 Les gens de Ruben, de Gad et de la demi-tribu de Manassé répondirent aux chefs des clans d’Israël:	21 And the children of Ruben, and of Gad, and of the half tribe of Manasses answered the princes of the embassage of Israel:
22 “Le Dieu des dieux, Yahvé, le Dieu des dieux, sait la vérité et Israël doit la savoir. Si nous nous sommes révoltés contre Yahvé, si nous lui avons été infidèles, alors, oui! que Yahvé ne nous épargne pas.	22 The Lord the most mighty God, the Lord the most mighty God, he knoweth, and Israel also shall understand: If with the design of transgression we have set up this altar, let him not save us, but punish us immediately:
23 Si nous avons bâti cet autel pour nous détourner de Yahvé, pour lui offrir des holocaustes et des oblations, pour y présenter des sacrifices de communion, que Yahvé lui-même nous en demande compte.	23 And if we did it with that mind, that we might lay upon it holocausts, and sacrifice, and victims of peace offerings, let him require and judge:
24 Mais nous avons agi de la sorte par crainte de ce qui pourrait arriver plus tard; peut-être un jour vos fils diront-ils aux nôtres: Qu’y a-t-il de commun entre vous et Yahvé le Dieu d’Israël?	24 And not rather with this thought and design, that we should say: To morrow your children will say to our children: What have you to do with the Lord the God of Israel?
25 Yahvé a placé le Jourdain comme frontière entre nous et vous, vous n’avez donc point de part avec Yahvé. Et ainsi, à cause de vos fils, nos fils cesseraient de craindre Yahvé.	25 The Lord hath put the river Jordan for a border between us and you, O ye children of Ruben, and ye children of Gad: and therefore you have no part in the Lord. And by this occasion you children shall turn away our children from the fear of the Lord. We therefore thought, it best,
26 Alors, nous nous sommes dit: Construisons-nous un autel, non pour y offrir des holocaustes ou des sacrifices,	26 And said: Let us build us an altar, not for holocausts, nor to offer victims,
27 mais pour qu’il soit témoin entre nous et vous, et nos descendants après nous. Il prouvera que nous pratiquons le culte de Yahvé, en sa présence, par nos holocaustes, nos offrandes et nos sacrifices de communion. Ainsi vos fils ne pourront pas dire à nos fils: Vous n’avez rien à voir avec Yahvé.	27 But for a testimony between us and you, and our posterity and yours, that we may serve the Lord, and that we may have a right to offer both holocausts, and victims and sacrifices of peace offerings: and that your children to morrow may not say to our children: You have no part in the Lord.
28 Nous nous sommes dit: si demain ils nous parlent ainsi à nous ou à nos descendants, nous leur dirons: Regardez la forme de l’autel de Yahvé que nos pères ont construit, non pas pour les holocaustes ou pour les sacrifices, mais pour qu’il soit témoin entre nous et vous.	28 And if they will say so, they shall answer them: Behold the altar of the Lord, which our fathers made, not for holocausts, nor for sacrifice, but for a testimony between us and you.
29 Nous ne voulons pas nous révolter contre Yahvé et cesser de le suivre. Nous n’avons pas bâti cet autel pour l’holocauste, pour l’offrande ou pour le sacrifice de communion, par mépris pour l’autel de Yahvé qui est devant sa Demeure.”	29 God keep us from any such wickedness that we should revolt from the Lord, and leave off following his steps, by building an altar to offer holocausts, and sacrifices, and victims, beside the altar of the Lord our God, which is erected before his tabernacle.
30 Pinhas le prêtre, les chefs de la communauté et les chefs des clans d’Israël qui étaient avec lui, entendirent les paroles que prononçaient les fils de Ruben, les fils de Gad et les fils de Manassé, et ces paroles leur plurent.	30 And when Phinees the priest, and the princes of the embassage, who were with him, had heard this, they were satisfied: and they admitted most willingly the words of the children of Ruben, and Gad, and of the half tribe of Manasses.
31 Alors Pinhas le prêtre dit aux fils de Ruben, de Gad et de Manassé: “Aujourd’hui nous savons que Yahvé est bien au milieu de nous puisque vous n’avez pas commis d’infidélité envers Yahvé et vous avez épargné à Israël les fléaux de Yahvé.”	31 And Phinees the priest the son of Eleazar said to them: Now we know that the Lord is with us, because you are not guilty of this revolt, and you have delivered the children of Israel from the hand of the Lord.
32 Alors, quittant les fils de Ruben et de Gad au pays de Galaad, Pinhas le prêtre et les chefs revinrent au pays de Canaan, vers les Israélites. Il leur rendirent compte de tout,	32 And he returned with the princes from the children of Ruben and Gad, out of the land of Galaad, into the land of Chanaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again.
33 et les Israélites approuvèrent. Ils bénirent Dieu et renoncèrent à partir en guerre pour ravager le pays où habitaient les fils de Ruben et de Gad.	33 And the saying pleased all that heard it. And the children of Israel praised God, and they no longer said that they would go up against them, and fight, and destroy the land of their possession.
34 Quant aux fils de Ruben et aux fils de Gad, ils appelèrent cet autel Témoin, car, dirent-ils: “Il est témoin entre nous de ce que Yahvé est Dieu.”	34 And the children of Ruben, and the children of Cad called the altar which they had built, Our testimony, that the Lord is God.
