1 Israël s’installa à Chittim et le peuple se livra à la prostitution avec les filles de Moab.	1 Israel settled at Shittim. The people gave themselves over to prostitution with Moabite women.
2 Elles invitèrent le peuple à sacrifier à leurs dieux: le peuple mangea et se prosterna devant leurs dieux.	2 These invited them to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down before theirgods.
3 Israël s’attacha au Baal de Péor et la colère de Yahvé s’enflamma contre Israël.	3 With Israel thus committed to the Baal of Peor, Yahweh's anger was aroused against them.
4 Yahvé dit alors à Moïse: “Prends tous les meneurs du peuple, empale-les à la face du soleil, devant Yahvé; ainsi la colère de Yahvé se détournera d’Israël.”	4 Yahweh said to Moses, 'Take al the leaders of the people. Impale them facing the sun, for Yahweh,to deflect his burning anger from Israel.'
5 Moïse dit aux chefs d’Israël: “Que chacun tue ceux de ses hommes qui se sont prostitués avec le Baal de Péor.”	5 Moses said to the judges of Israel, 'Each of you wil put to death those of his people who havecommitted themselves to the Baal of Peor.'
6 Juste à ce moment-là un Israélite ramenait à sa tente une Madianite, sous le regard de Moïse et de toute la communauté d’Israël qui pleuraient à l’entrée de la Tente du Rendez-Vous.	6 One of the Israelites came along, bringing the Midianite woman into his family, under the very eyes ofMoses and the whole community of Israelites as they were weeping at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.
7 À cette vue, Pinhas fils d’Éléazar, fils d’Aaron le prêtre, saisit une lance,	7 The priest Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, on seeing this, stood up, left the assembly, seizeda lance,
8 suivit l’Israélite dans l’arrière-tente et les transperça tous les deux, lui et la femme, en plein ventre. Aussitôt cessa le fléau qui pesait sur Israël:	8 fol owed the Israelite into the alcove, and there ran them both through, the Israelite and the woman,through the stomach. Thus the plague which had struck the Israelites was arrested.
9 car déjà 24 000 d’entre eux étaient morts de ce fléau.	9 In the plague twenty-four thousand of them had died.
10 Yahvé dit à Moïse:	10 Yahweh then spoke and said,
11 “Pinhas fils d’Éléazar, fils d’Aaron le prêtre, a éloigné ma colère des Israélites quand il s’est montré jaloux pour moi au milieu d’eux.	11 'The priest Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron has deflected my wrath from the Israelites, hebeing the only one of them to have the same zeal as I have; for which reason, I did not make an end of theIsraelites in my zeal.
12 C’est pourquoi tu vas lui dire que je m’engage à le récompenser.	12 For this reason I say: To him I grant my covenant of peace.
13 Je m’engage à lui donner le sacerdoce pour toujours, à lui et à sa descendance, car il s’est montré jaloux pour son Dieu et a réparé au nom des Israélites.”	13 To him and his descendants after him, this covenant will assure the priesthood for ever. In rewardfor his zeal for his God, he will have the right to perform the ritual of expiation for the Israelites.'
14 L’Israélite qui était mort, frappé avec la Madianite, s’appelait Zimri, fils de Salou; il était un des chefs de la tribu de Siméon.	14 The Israelite who had been kil ed (the one who was kil ed with the Midianite woman) was cal edZimri son of Salu, leader of one of the Simeonite families.
15 Le nom de la Madianite mise à mort était Kozbi, fille de Sour, chef d’une famille de Madian.	15 The woman, the Midianite who was kil ed, was cal ed Cozbi, daughter of Zur, chief of a clan, of afamily, in Midian.
16 Yahvé dit alors à Moïse:	16 Yahweh then spoke to Moses and said,
17 “Attaque les Madianites et frappe-les,	17 'Harass the Midianites, strike them down,
18 car ils vous ont attaqués par leur idolâtrie. Ils ont rusé avec vous dans l’affaire de Péor et dans l’affaire de Kozbi, leur sœur, fille d’un prince de Madian, c’est elle qui fut frappée au jour du fléau, dans l’affaire du Péor.”	18 for harassing you with their guile in the Peor affair and in the affair of their sister Cozbi, the daughterof a prince of Midian, the woman who was kil ed the day the plague came on account of the business of Peor.'
