1 Je veux te glorifier, mon Seigneur et mon Roi, je te bénirai, ô Dieu, mon Sauveur, et je rendrai grâces à ton nom.	1 The prayer of Jesus, the son of Sirach: I will confess to you, O Lord and King, and I will give praise to you, O God my Saviour.
2 Car tu t’es fait mon protecteur, mon soutien, car tu n’as pas permis que se perde mon corps, que je me prenne au piège de leurs calomnies, aux artifices des diseurs de mensonge. Quand j’étais face à mes accusateurs, tu m’as assisté et tu m’as délivré!	2 I will acknowledge your name. For you have been my Helper and Protector.
3 Grande est ta miséricorde, grand est ton Nom! tu m’as arraché aux crocs prêts à me dévorer, à la main de ceux qui en voulaient à ma vie, tu m’as tiré de multiples épreuves,	3 And you have freed my body from perdition, from the snare of the iniquitous tongue, and from the lips of those who forge lies. And you have been my Helper in the sight of those who stood nearby.
4 des flammes qui m’entouraient, où je suffoquais: au beau milieu du feu je n’ai pas brûlé!	4 And you have freed me according to the multitude of the mercy of your name: from those who roared and prepared to devour,
5 Tu m’as repris au Séjour d’en bas, et de même à la langue impure et mensongère,	5 from the hands of those who sought my life, and from the gates of tribulation that surrounded me,
6 quand ses calomnies arrivaient jusqu’au roi. J’étais arrivé au seuil de la tombe, et déjà ma vie basculait chez les morts.	6 from the oppression of the flames that surrounded me, and so I was not burned in the midst of the fire,
7 Ils me cernaient, et personne pour m’aider! Je cherchais un secours humain: rien!	7 from the depths of the bowels of hell, and from the defiled tongue, and from lying words, from an iniquitous king, and from an unjust tongue.
8 Je me suis souvenu de ta miséricorde, Seigneur, de tes interventions dans le passé; car tu délivres ceux qui s’appuient sur toi et tu les sauves de la main de l’adversaire.	8 My soul shall praise the Lord, even unto death.
9 De la terre est montée ma supplication, j’ai prié pour être délivré de la mort.	9 For my life was drawing near to hell below.
10 J’ai invoqué le Seigneur, Père de mon Seigneur: Ne m’abandonne pas en ces jours de détresse, lorsque ces gens triomphent de me voir sans secours. Sans cesse je louerai ton Nom et je te rendrai grâces avec des hymnes.	10 And they surrounded me on every side. And there was no one who would help me. I looked around for the assistance of men, and there was none.
11 Ma prière a été exaucée: tu m’as sauvé de la ruine et délivré de cette heure fatale.	11 Then I remembered your mercy, O Lord, and your works, which are from the very beginning.
12 C’est pourquoi je veux te rendre grâces et te chanter, je bénirai le Nom du Seigneur.	12 For you rescue those who persevere for you, O Lord, and you free them from the hands of the Gentiles.
13 Déjà quand j’étais jeune, avant tous mes voyages, j’ai carrément demandé la sagesse dans la prière.	13 You exalted my habitation upon the earth, and I made supplication that death would pass away.
14 Je me tenais devant le Sanctuaire pour la demander, et jusqu’à la fin je la poursuivrai.	14 I called upon the Lord, the Father of my Lord, so that he would not abandon me in the day of my tribulation, nor in the time of arrogance without assistance.
15 J’y ai trouvé ma joie: elle venait comme la fleur d’une grappe mûrissante. J’ai avancé droit mon chemin, et dès ma jeunesse j’ai suivi sa trace.	15 I will praise your name unceasingly, and I will praise it with thanksgiving, for my prayer was heeded.
16 À peine avais-je tendu l’oreille de son côté qu’elle m’a été accordée, et j’y ai trouvé toute une doctrine.	16 And you freed me from perdition, and you rescued me from the time of iniquity.
17 Comme j’ai progressé grâce à elle! Je veux rendre gloire à celui qui me l’a donnée.	17 Because of this, I will give thanks and praise to you, and I will bless the name of the Lord.
18 J’avais décidé de la mettre en pratique, j’ai ardemment cherché le bien et je n’ai pas à m’en repentir.	18 When I was still young, before I wandered astray, I sought wisdom openly in my prayer.
19 Elle m’a fait livrer de durs combats: je suis devenu exigeant sur la pratique de la Loi. J’élevais les mains vers le ciel, déplorant mes insuffisances à son sujet.	19 I asked for her before the temple, and even to the very end, I will inquire after her. And she flourished like a newly-ripened grape.
20 Je me suis tourné vers elle de toute mon âme, et je l’ai trouvée à force de purification. C’est d’ailleurs grâce à elle que, dès le début, je possédais mon cœur: maintenant elle ne m’abandonnera pas.	20 My heart rejoiced in her. My feet walked in the right path. From my youth, I pursued her.
21 Le désir de l’acquérir me tenait jusqu’aux entrailles, et grâce à cela j’ai obtenu la vraie fortune.	21 I bent my ear a little and accepted her.
22 Le Seigneur m’a récompensé avec le don de la parole: il me permettra de le louer.	22 I found much wisdom within myself, and I benefited greatly by her.
23 Approchez-vous, vous qui ne savez pas, venez passer un temps dans l’école de la sagesse!	23 I will give glory to him who gives wisdom to me.
24 Pourquoi dites-vous que la sagesse n’est pas pour vous, si vous en avez vraiment soif?	24 For I have decided that I should act according to wisdom. I have been zealous for what is good, and so I will not be confounded.
25 Je vous déclare, car je peux le dire: Faites une acquisition sans rien payer!	25 My soul has struggled for wisdom, and in doing so, I have been confirmed.
26 Pliez votre cou pour recevoir son joug, recevez l’instruction! Vous allez la trouver, elle est déjà là.	26 I extended my hands on high, and I mourned my ignorance of her.
27 Ouvrez les yeux et voyez: c’est bien peu ce que j’ai peiné pour arriver à cette fin d’étape.	27 I directed my soul toward her, and I found her within knowledge.
28 Une masse d’argent ne serait pas de trop pour payer l’instruction: avec elle vous auriez de l’or en abondance.	28 From the beginning, I held my heart to wisdom. Because of this, I will not be forsaken.
29 Réjouissez-vous donc de la miséricorde du Seigneur, n’ayez pas honte de le louer.	29 My stomach was stirred up while seeking her. Because of her, I will hold a good possession.
30 Achevez votre travail avant que l’heure ne sonne: au temps qu’il a fixé, le Seigneur vous récompensera.	30 The Lord has given me a tongue as my reward, and I will praise him with it.
	31 Draw near to me, you who are untaught, and gather yourselves into the house of discipline.
	32 Why are you reluctant? And what do you have to say about these things? Your souls are exceedingly thirsty!
	33 I have opened my mouth, and I have spoken. Buy wisdom for yourselves without silver,
	34 and subject your neck to her yoke, and let your soul accept her discipline. For she is close enough to be found.
	35 See with your own eyes how I have labored only a little, and have found much rest for myself.
	36 Take up discipline, as if it were a great sum of money, and possess an abundance of gold in her.
	37 Let your soul rejoice in his mercy. For you will not be confounded by his praise.
	38 Accomplish your work before the time. And he will give you your reward in his time.
