1 Ben-Hadad, roi d’Aram, rassembla toute son armée. Il avait avec lui 32 rois, des chevaux et des chars lorsqu’il monta mettre le siège devant Samarie pour s’en emparer.	1 Ben-Hadad king of Aram mustered his whole army -- thirty-two kings were with him, and horses andchariots -- and marched on Samaria, to besiege it and take it by assault.
2 Il envoya des messagers en ville auprès d’Akab, roi d’Israël,	2 He sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel to tel him, 'Ben-Hadad says this,
3 pour lui porter ce message: “Ainsi a parlé Ben-Hadad: Ton argent et ton or sont à moi, tes femmes et tes fils sont à moi.”	3 "Your silver and gold are mine. Your wives and children remain yours." '
4 Le roi d’Israël répondit: “Tu as bien dit, mon seigneur le roi, je suis à toi avec tout ce qui m’appartient.”	4 The king of Israel replied, 'As you command, my lord king. Myself and al I have are yours.'
5 Mais les messagers vinrent de nouveau; ils dirent à Akab de la part de Ben-Hadad: “Si je t’ai dit: Tu me donneras ton or et ton argent, tes femmes et tes fils,	5 The messengers came again, this time they said, 'Ben-Hadad says this, "I have already sent you anorder to hand over your silver and your gold, your wives and your children;
6 sois bien sûr que demain à pareille heure j’enverrai mes serviteurs chez toi. Ils fouilleront ta maison et les maisons de tes serviteurs, et tout ce qui leur plaira, ils le ramasseront et l’emporteront.”	6 but I swear, this time tomorrow, I shal send my servants to ransack your house and your servants'houses and lay hands on everything that they value and take it away." '
7 Alors le roi d’Israël rassembla les anciens du pays et leur dit: “Regardez, il est évident que celui-là nous veut du mal. Quand il m’a réclamé mes femmes et mes fils, mon argent et mon or, je ne lui ai rien refusé.”	7 The king of Israel summoned al the elders of the country and said, 'You can see clearly how this manintends to ruin us. He has already demanded my wives and my children, although I have not refused him mysilver and gold.'
8 Tous les anciens et tout le peuple lui dirent: “Ne l’écoute pas! Il ne faut pas accepter.”	8 Al the elders and all the people said, 'Take no notice. Do not consent.'
9 Alors il dit aux messagers de Ben-Hadad: “Dites ceci à mon seigneur le roi: Ce que tu m’as demandé la première fois, je le ferai, mais je ne peux accepter cette nouvelle exigence.” Les messagers partirent et rapportèrent sa réponse.	9 So he gave this answer to Ben-Hadad's messengers, 'Say to my lord the king, "Al you first required ofyour servant I wil do, but this I cannot do." ' And the messengers went back with the answer.
10 Alors Ben-Hadad lui envoya dire: “Que les dieux me maudissent et me maudissent encore s’il y a assez de poussière dans Samarie pour que chacun de mes combattants puisse en remplir le creux de sa main.”	10 Ben-Hadad then sent him the following message, 'May the gods bring unnameable ills on me andworse il s too, if there is enough dust in Samaria for each of my fol owers to have a handful!'
11 Le roi d’Israël répondit aux messagers: “Vous direz à votre maître que celui qui prend son épée ne doit pas se vanter comme celui qui la repose!”	11 But the king of Israel returned this answer, 'Say: the man who puts on his armour is not the one toboast, but the man who takes it off.'
12 L’autre était en train de boire avec les rois sous les tentes quand on lui rapporta cette parole; il dit à ses serviteurs: “Prenez vos postes de combat!” Et ils prirent position contre la ville.	12 When Ben-Hadad heard this message -- he was under the awnings drinking with the kings -- he gaveorders to his servants, 'Take up position!' And they took up their positions against the city.
13 À ce moment un prophète s’avança vers le roi d’Israël et lui dit: “Écoute cette parole de Yahvé: Vois-tu cette grande armée? Moi, aujourd’hui, je la livre entre tes mains et tu sauras que je suis Yahvé.”	13 A prophet then arrived, looking for Ahab king of Israel. 'Yahweh says this,' he said. ' "You have seenthis huge army? This very day I shal deliver it into your hands, and you will know that I am Yahweh." '
14 Akab lui dit: “Qui fera ce travail?” Il répondit: “Yahvé a dit: Les jeunes des chefs de provinces.” Akab reprit la parole: “Qui engagera le combat?” Il répondit: “Toi.”	14 'By whose means?' Ahab asked. The prophet replied, 'Yahweh says this, "By means of the guards ofthe district governors." ' 'Who wil co-ordinate the attack?' Ahab asked. 'You will,' the prophet replied.
15 Akab passa en revue les jeunes des chefs de provinces, ils étaient 232. Il passa ensuite en revue tout le peuple, tous les Israélites: ils étaient 7 000.	15 So Ahab inspected the guards of the district governors: there were two hundred and thirty-two. Afterthese he reviewed the army, all the Israelites: there were seven thousand.
16 À l’heure de midi, ils firent une sortie quand Ben-Hadad était en train de s’enivrer sous les tentes avec les 32 rois venus avec lui.	16 They made a sortie at midday, when Ben-Hadad was drinking himself senseless under the awnings,he and the thirty-two kings who were al ies.
17 Les jeunes des chefs de provinces sortirent d’abord. On le fit savoir à Ben-Hadad: “Des hommes sont sortis de Samarie.”	17 The guards of the district governors led the sortie. A report was made to Ben-Hadad: 'Some menhave come out of Samaria.'
18 Il répondit: “Qu’ils soient sortis pour combattre ou pour demander la paix, faites-les prisonniers!”	18 He said, 'If they have come out for peace, take them alive; if they have come out for war, take themalive too.'
19 Mais derrière les jeunes des chefs de provinces, c’est toute l’armée qui sortit de la ville.	19 So they made a sortie from the city, the district governors' guards and behind them the army,
20 Ils abattirent chacun son homme, les Araméens tournèrent le dos et Israël se lança à leur poursuite. Ben-Hadad roi d’Aram sauta sur un cheval et prit la fuite avec ses cavaliers.	20 and each struck down his man. Aram took to flight and Israel pursued; Ben-Hadad king of Aramescaped on horseback.
21 Le roi d’Israël sortit, il ramassa les chevaux et les chars et il infligea à Aram une grande défaite.	21 The king of Israel then advanced, capturing horses and chariots and inflicting a great defeat on Aram.
22 Alors le prophète s’avança vers le roi d’Israël et lui dit: “Renforce-toi et prends tes dispositions, car au début de l’an prochain le roi d’Aram viendra de nouveau t’attaquer.”	22 The prophet then went to the king of Israel and said, 'Now is the time to be resolute and think careful yabout what you should do, for at the turn of the year the king of Aram wil march against you.'
23 De leur côté, les conseillers du roi d’Aram lui dirent: “Les dieux d’Israël sont des dieux des montagnes, c’est pourquoi ils ont été plus forts que nous. Mais attirons-les dans la plaine, et nous aurons sûrement le dessus.	23 The servants of the king of Aram said to him, 'Their gods are gods of the mountains; that is why theyhave proved stronger than we are. But if we fight them on level ground, we shal certainly beat them.
24 Par ailleurs, fais ceci: enlève leur poste à tous ces rois, et mets à leur place des gouverneurs.	24 This is what you must do: remove all these kings from their commands and appoint professionalsoldiers in their place.
25 Tu vas réunir une armée aussi nombreuse que celle que tu as perdue, avec autant de chevaux et autant de chars, et nous les combattrons dans la plaine: nous aurons sûrement le dessus.” Le roi suivit donc leur conseil.	25 You, for your part, must recruit an army as large as the one which deserted you, with as many horsesand as many chariots; then if we fight them on level ground, we shal certainly beat them.' He listened to theiradvice and acted accordingly.
26 Au début de l’année suivante, Ben-Hadad passa en revue les Araméens et monta vers Afek pour combattre Israël.	26 At the turn of the year, Ben-Hadad mustered the Aramaeans and marched on Aphek to fight Israel.
27 On passa aussi les Israélites en revue, ils reçurent des vivres et s’avancèrent à la rencontre des Araméens. Les Israélites campèrent en face d’eux comme deux troupeaux de chèvres, alors que les Araméens remplissaient le pays.	27 The Israelites were already mobilised and provisioned, and marched out to meet them. Encampedopposite them, the Israelites looked like two herds of goats, whereas the Aramaeans fil ed the countryside.
28 Un homme de Dieu s’avança à ce moment et dit au roi d’Israël: “Voici ce que dit Yahvé: Les Araméens prétendent que Yahvé est un dieu des montagnes et non pas un dieu de la plaine; pour cette raison je vais livrer toute cette grande armée entre tes mains, et vous saurez que je suis Yahvé.”	28 The man of God then went to the king of Israel and said, 'Yahweh says this, "Since Aram has saidthat Yahweh is a god of the mountains and not a god of the plains, I shall put the whole of this huge army intoyour power, and you will know that I am Yahweh." '
29 Ils campèrent sept jours les uns en face des autres; le septième jour on engagea la bataille et les Israélites tuèrent aux Araméens 100 000 fantassins en un seul jour.	29 For seven days they were encamped opposite each other. On the seventh day battle was joined andthe Israelites slaughtered the Aramaeans, a hundred thousand foot soldiers in one day.
30 Ceux qui restaient se réfugièrent dans la ville d’Afek, mais la muraille tomba sur les 27 000 qui restaient. Ben-Hadad s’était enfui et il allait dans la ville de maison en maison.	30 The rest fled to Aphek, into the citadel, but the city walls collapsed on twenty-seven thousand of thesurvivors. Now Ben-Hadad had fled and taken refuge in an inner room inside the citadel.
31 Ses serviteurs lui dirent: “Nous avons entendu dire que les rois d’Israël sont des rois généreux, laisse-nous mettre des sacs autour de nos reins et des cordes autour de notre tête, et nous irons trouver le roi d’Israël, peut-être te laissera-t-il la vie sauve.”	31 'Look,' his servants said to him, 'we have heard that the kings of Israel are faithful and kind kings. Letus put sackcloth round our waists and cords round our heads and go out to the king of Israel; perhaps he wilspare your life.'
32 Ils se mirent donc des sacs autour des reins, des cordes autour de leur tête, et ils allèrent dire au roi d’Israël: “Ton serviteur Ben-Hadad te fait dire ceci: Accorde-moi seulement la vie sauve!” Le roi Akab répondit: “Est-il toujours en vie? Il est mon frère!”	32 So they wrapped sackcloth round their waists and put cords round their heads and went to the king ofIsrael, and said, 'Your servant Ben-Hadad says, "Spare my life." '
33 Les autres n’en espéraient pas tant, ils dirent aussitôt: “Ben-Hadad est ton frère!” Le roi répondit: “Allez le chercher.” Ben-Hadad vint donc à sa rencontre et Akab le fit monter sur son char.	33 'So he is stil alive?' he replied. 'He is my brother.' The men took this for a good omen and quicklyseized on his words. 'Yes,' they said, 'Ben-Hadad is your brother.' Ahab said, 'Go and fetch him.' Then Ben-Hadad came out to him and Ahab made him get up into his chariot.
34 Ben-Hadad lui dit: “Je te rendrai les villes que mon père a prises à ton père, et tu pourras installer des commerces à Damas comme mon père en avait installé à Samarie.” Akab répondit: “Je te laisserai partir en échange d’un traité.” Il conclut donc un traité avec lui et le laissa partir.	34 Ben-Hadad said, 'I shall restore the towns which my father took from your father and you may set upa trading quarter for yourself in Damascus as my father did in Samaria.' 'With a treaty,' Ahab said, 'I shall set youfree.' Granting him a treaty, Ahab let him go.
35 Au même moment un frère prophète disait à son compagnon sur l’ordre de Yahvé: “Frappe-moi donc!” Mais l’autre refusa de le frapper.	35 At Yahweh's command a member of the brotherhood of prophets said to a companion of his, 'Strikeme,' but the man refused to strike him.
36 Il lui dit alors: “Puisque tu n’as pas écouté la voix de Yahvé, le lion te frappera après que tu m’auras quitté.” Il s’en alla, le lion le rencontra et le tua.	36 So he said to him, 'Since you have disobeyed Yahweh's order, the very moment you leave me a lionwil kill you.' And no sooner had he left him than he met a lion, which killed him.
37 Le prophète alla trouver un autre compagnon et lui dit: “Frappe-moi donc!” L’homme commença à le frapper et le blessa.	37 The prophet then went to find another man and said, 'Strike me,' and the man struck him andwounded him.
38 Alors le frère prophète alla se poster sur le passage du roi; il s’était déguisé avec un bandeau sur les yeux.	38 The prophet then went and stood waiting for the king on the road, disguising himself with a bandageover his eyes.
39 Au moment où le roi passait, il cria vers le roi: “Je suis arrivé sur le champ de bataille lorsqu’un autre en partait. Il m’a laissé un prisonnier en me disant: ‘Garde bien cet homme, car s’il s’échappe, ta vie paiera pour la sienne ou tu verseras un talent d’argent.’	39 As the king passed, he cal ed out to him, 'Your servant was making his way to where the fight wasthickest when someone left the fighting to bring a man to me, and said, "Guard this man; if he is found missing,your life wil pay for his, or else you wil have to pay one talent of silver."
40 Or pendant que j’étais occupé ici et là, le prisonnier a disparu.” Le roi d’Israël lui répondit: “Mais tu prononces toi-même ton jugement!”	40 But your servant was busy with one thing and another, the man disappeared.' The king of Israel said,'That is your sentence then. You have pronounced it yourself.'
41 Aussitôt le prophète enleva le bandeau qu’il avait sur les yeux et le roi d’Israël le reconnut pour un des prophètes.	41 At this the man quickly pul ed off the bandage over his eyes, and the king of Israel recognised him asone of the prophets.
42 Alors il dit au roi: “Écoute cette parole de Yahvé: Puisque tu as laissé échapper l’homme que j’avais voué à l’anathème, ta vie répondra pour sa vie, et ton peuple pour son peuple.”	42 He said to the king, 'Yahweh says this, "Since you have let the man escape who was under my curseof destruction, your life wil pay for his, your people for his people." '
43 Le roi d’Israël s’en alla démoralisé et de très mauvaise humeur; il rentra chez lui à Samarie.	43 And the king of Israel went home, gloomy and out of temper, back to Samaria.
