1 La guerre se prolongea entre la maison de Saül et celle de David. David s’imposait de plus en plus, tandis que le parti de Saül s’effritait.	1 Then a long struggle occurred between the house of Saul and the house of David, with David prospering and growing ever stronger, but the house of Saul decreasing daily.
2 David eut des fils à Hébron: l’aîné était Amnon, né d’Ahinoam de Yizréel;	2 And sons were born to David in Hebron. And his firstborn son was Amnon, from Ahinoam the Jezreelite.
3 le second était Kiléab, né d’Abigayil femme de Nabal de Karmel; le troisième, Absalom fils de Maaka, une fille de Talmaï, roi de Guéchour,	3 And after him, there was Chileab, from Abigail, the wife of Nabal of Carmel. Then the third was Absalom, the son of Maacah, the daughter of Talmai, the king of Geshur.
4 le quatrième était Adonias, né de Haggit; le cinquième, Chefatyas, né d’Abital,	4 Then the fourth was Adonijah, the son of Haggith. And the fifth was Shephatiah, the son of Abital.
5 le sixième, Yitréam né d’Égla, femme de David. Tous ces fils de David naquirent à Hébron.	5 Also, the sixth was Ithream, from Eglah, the wife of David. These were born to David at Hebron.
6 Durant la guerre entre la maison de Saül et la maison de David, Abner prenait de plus en plus d’importance dans la maison de Saül.	6 Then, while there was a battle between the house of Saul and the house of David, Abner, the son of Ner, was reigning over the house of Saul.
7 Saül avait une concubine nommée Rispa, fille d’Ayya, Abner la prit. Ichbaal dit à Abner: “Pourquoi as-tu pris la concubine de mon père?”	7 Now Saul had a concubine named Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah. And Ishbosheth said to Abner,
8 À ces mots Abner entra dans une violente colère contre Ichbaal: “Suis-je donc une tête de chien? Je me suis montré plein d’attentions pour la maison de Saül ton père, pour ses frères et ses amis, je ne t’ai pas laissé entre les mains de David, et aujourd’hui tu me fais une scène pour une histoire de femme?	8 “Why did you enter to the concubine of my father?” But he, being exceedingly angry at the words of Ishbosheth, said: “Am I the head of a dog against Judah this day? I have shown mercy to the house of Saul, your father, and to his brothers and friends. And I have not delivered you into the hands of David. And yet today you have sought me, so that you might rebuke me over a woman?
9 Que Dieu me maudisse et me maudisse encore si je ne réalise pas moi-même ce que Yahvé a promis par serment à David.	9 May God do these things to Abner, and may he add these other things, if, in the same way that the Lord swore to David, I do not do so with him:
10 Il a dit qu’il enlèverait la royauté à la maison de Saül et qu’il ferait David roi d’Israël et de Juda, depuis Dan jusqu’à Bersabée.”	10 that the kingdom be transferred from the house of Saul, and that the throne of David be elevated over Israel and over Judah, from Dan to Beersheba.”
11 Ichbaal n’osa pas répliquer un seul mot à Abner, car il avait peur de lui.	11 And he was not able to respond anything to him, because he was in fear of him.
12 Abner envoya des messagers à David: “Fais un accord avec moi et je t’aiderai à rassembler autour de toi tout Israël.”	12 Therefore, Abner sent messengers to David for himself, saying, “Whose is the land?” and so that they would say, “Make a friendship with me, and my hand will be with you, and I will lead back all of Israel to you.”
13 David répondit: “Très bien, je ferai un accord avec toi. Je ne mets qu’une condition: quand tu viendras, tu me ramèneras Mikal, la fille de Saül; sinon il est inutile de te présenter devant moi.”	13 And he said: “It is best. I will make a friendship with you. But one thing I ask of you, saying: You shall not see my face before you bring Michal, the daughter of Saul. And in this way, you shall come, and see me.”
14 David envoya des messagers à Ichbaal, fils de Saül: “Rends-moi ma femme Mikal qu’on m’a donnée contre 100 prépuces de Philistins.”	14 Then David sent messengers to Ishbosheth, the son of Saul, saying, “Restore my wife Michal, whom I espoused to myself for one hundred foreskins of the Philistines.”
15 Alors Ichbaal l’envoya prendre chez son nouveau mari Paltiel, fils de Layich.	15 Therefore, Ishbosheth sent and took her from her husband Paltiel, the son of Laish.
16 Son mari partit avec elle et l’accompagna en pleurant jusqu’à Bahourim. Là Abner lui dit: “Retourne chez toi!” Et il s’en retourna.	16 And her husband was following her, weeping, as far as Bahurim. And Abner said to him, “Go and return.” And he returned.
17 Abner eut des entretiens avec les anciens d’Israël; il leur dit: “Déjà ces derniers temps vous avez demandé que David règne sur vous.	17 Likewise, Abner sent word to the elders of Israel, saying: “As much yesterday as the day before, you were seeking David, so that he might reign over you.
18 Maintenant passez aux actes, car Yahvé a parlé de David en ces termes: Par la main de mon serviteur David, je sauverai mon peuple Israël de la main des Philistins et de tous ses ennemis.”	18 Therefore, accomplish it now. For the Lord has spoken to David, saying: ‘By the hand of my servant David, I will save my people Israel from the hand of the Philistines and of all their enemies.’ ”
19 Abner parla ainsi aux hommes de Benjamin, puis il alla répéter à David, à Hébron, tout ce que souhaitaient les gens d’Israël et de Benjamin.	19 Then Abner also spoke to Benjamin. And he went away, so that he might speak to David in Hebron all that would be pleasing to Israel and to all of Benjamin.
20 Abner vint trouver David à Hébron avec 20 hommes, et David fit un festin pour Abner et pour les hommes qui l’accompagnaient.	20 And he went to David in Hebron with twenty men. And David made a feast for Abner, and for his men who had arrived with him.
21 Abner dit alors à David: “Maintenant je m’en vais pour rassembler tout Israël autour de mon seigneur le roi; ils feront un pacte avec toi, et tu régneras sur tout ce que tu peux souhaiter. Puis David congédia Abner qui s’en retourna en paix.”	21 And Abner said to David, “I will rise up, so that I may gather all of Israel to you, my lord the king, and so that I may enter into a pact with you, and so that you may reign over all, just as your soul desires.” Then, when David had led Abner away, and he had departed in peace,
22 Or voici que Joab et la garde de David revenaient d’une razzia: ils ramenaient un énorme butin. Abner, lui, avait quitté David à Hébron, David l’avait congédié et il s’en retournait tranquillement.	22 immediately the servants of David and of Joab arrived, after having slain robbers, with exceedingly great spoils. But Abner was not with David in Hebron. For by then he had sent him away, and he had set out in peace.
23 Lorsque Joab et sa troupe arrivèrent, on avertit Joab qu’Abner, fils de Ner était venu chez le roi et que celui-ci l’avait congédié amicalement.	23 And Joab, and the entire army that was with him, had arrived afterward. And so, it was reported to Joab, explaining that Abner, the son of Ner, went to the king, and he dismissed him, and he went away in peace.
24 Alors Joab entra chez le roi et lui dit: “Qu’as-tu fait? Abner est venu chez toi et tu l’as laissé partir?	24 And Joab entered to the king, and he said: “What have you done? Behold, Abner came to you. Why did you dismiss him, so that he has gone and departed?
25 Tu connais Abner, fils de Ner: il est venu pour te tromper, pour connaître tes faits et gestes et savoir ce que tu prépares.”	25 Do you not know, about Abner, the son of Ner, that he came to you for this, so that he might deceive you, and might know of your departure and your return, and so that he might know all that you do?”
26 Aussitôt sorti de chez David, et sans le dire à David, Joab envoya des messagers à la citerne de Sira pour faire revenir Abner.	26 And so, Joab, going out from David, sent messengers after Abner, and he brought him back from the cistern of Sirah, without David knowing.
27 Et quand Abner arriva à Hébron, Joab l’entraîna à l’intérieur de la porte sous prétexte de parler discrètement avec lui; là il le frappa au ventre pour venger le sang de son frère Azaël. Abner mourut.	27 And when Abner had returned to Hebron, Joab took him alone to the middle of the gate, so that he might speak to him, but with deceit. And there, he stabbed him in the groin, and he died, in revenge for the blood of Asahel, his brother.
28 David n’apprit la chose qu’ensuite. Il s’écria: “Moi et mon royaume, nous serons pour toujours innocents devant Yahvé du sang d’Abner, fils de Ner.	28 And when David had heard of it, now that the matter was done, he said: “I and my kingdom are clean before the Lord, even forever, of the blood of Abner, the son of Ner.
29 Que ce sang retombe sur la tête de Joab et sur toute la maison de son père. Qu’il y ait toujours dans la maison de Joab des malades souffrant d’un écoulement ou de lèpre, des hommes bons pour manier le fuseau, des victimes de l’épée, des gens qui manquent de pain!”	29 And may it fall upon the head of Joab, and upon the entire house of his father. And may there not fail to be, in the house of Joab, one who suffers from a flow of seed, or one who is leprous, or one who is effeminate, or one who falls by the sword, or one who is in need of bread.”
30 (Joab et son frère Abisaï avaient tué Abner parce qu’il avait frappé à mort leur frère Azaël lors du combat de Gabaon.)	30 And so, Joab and his brother Abishai killed Abner, because he had killed their brother Asahel at Gibeon, during the battle.
31 David dit ensuite à Joab et à tout le monde qui était autour de lui: “Déchirez vos vêtements, mettez des sacs sur vos reins et faites le deuil pour Abner.” Le roi David marchait derrière le corps.	31 Then David said to Joab, and to all the people who were with him, “Tear your garments, and gird yourselves with sackcloth, and mourn before the funeral procession of Abner.” Moreover, king David himself was following the casket.
32 Pendant l’enterrement à Hébron, le roi éleva la voix et pleura devant la tombe: tout le peuple pleurait avec lui.	32 And when they had buried Abner in Hebron, king David lifted up his voice, and he wept over the burial mound of Abner. And all the people also wept.
33 Le roi entonna alors cette lamentation sur Abner: “Abner devait-il mourir comme un homme de rien?	33 And the king, mourning and lamenting Abner, said: “By no means has Abner died the way that cowards usually die.
34 Tes mains n’étaient pas liées, tes pieds n’étaient pas serrés dans des chaînes de bronze, mais tu es tombé comme on tombe devant des criminels.” out le peuple se remit à pleurer.	34 Your hands are not bound, and your feet are not weighed down with fetters. But just as men often fall before the sons of iniquity, so you have fallen.” And while repeating this, all the people wept over him.
35 Tous insistèrent auprès de David pour qu’il mange pendant qu’il faisait encore jour, mais David fit ce serment: “Que Dieu me maudisse et me maudisse encore si je goûte du pain ou quoi que ce soit avant le coucher du soleil.”	35 And when the entire multitude had arrived to take food with David, while it was still broad daylight, David swore, saying, “May God do these things to me, and may he add these other things, if I taste bread or anything else before the sun sets.”
36 Les gens du peuple furent très impressionnés et trouvèrent cela très bien, d’ailleurs ils trouvaient très bien tout ce que faisait le roi.	36 And all the people heard it, and everything that the king did in the sight of the entire people was pleasing to them.
37 Ainsi tout le peuple et tout Israël comprirent que ce n’était pas le roi qui avait fait assassiner Abner, fils de Ner.	37 And every common person, and all of Israel, realized on that day that the killing of Abner, the son of Ner, had not been done by the king.
38 Le roi dit à ses serviteurs: “Ne savez-vous pas qu’un chef, un grand chef, est tombé aujourd’hui en Israël?	38 The king also said to his servants: “Could you be ignorant that a leader and a very great man has fallen today in Israel?
39 Moi, pour l’instant, je ne peux pas grand-chose bien que j’aie reçu la consécration royale; ces hommes, les fils de Sérouya, sont plus durs que moi. Que Yahvé fasse payer le mal à celui qui l’a fait!”	39 But I am still tender, and yet anointed king. And these men of the sons of Zeruiah are too harsh for me. May the Lord repay whoever does evil in accord with his malice.”
