1 Ahitofel dit à Absalom: “Permets que je choisisse 12 000 hommes, je veux aller poursuivre David cette nuit-même.	1 Ahithophel went on to say to Absalom: "Please let me choose twelve thousand men, and be off in pursuit of David tonight.
2 Je l’attaquerai alors qu’il est fatigué et qu’il a les mains lasses, je jetterai la panique dans tout le peuple et le peuple s’enfuira. Alors il me suffira d’abattre le roi	2 If I come upon him when he is weary and discouraged, I shall cause him panic. When all the people with him flee, I shall strike down the king alone.
3 et je te ramènerai tout le peuple, comme une fiancée revient vers son époux. Il ne te faut que la vie d’un homme, que tout le peuple soit en paix.”	3 Then I can bring back the rest of the people to you, as a bride returns to her husband. It is the death of only one man you are seeking; then all the people will be at peace."
4 La chose parut bonne aux yeux d’Absalom et aux yeux de tous les anciens d’Israël.	4 This plan was agreeable to Absalom and to all the elders of Israel.
5 Absalom dit alors: “Appelez aussi Houchaï l’Arkite, pour que nous entendions son avis.”	5 Then Absalom said, "Now call Hushai the Archite also; let us hear what he too has to say."
6 Houchaï s’approcha d’Absalom et Absalom lui dit ceci: “Ahitofel a donné son avis. Devons-nous le suivre? Sinon, donne-nous ton avis.”	6 When Hushai came to Absalom, Absalom said to him: "This is what Ahithophel proposed. Shall we follow his proposal? If not, speak up."
7 Houchaï répondit à Absalom: “Pour une fois le conseil d’Ahitofel n’est pas bon.”	7 Hushai replied to Absalom, "This time Ahithophel has not given good counsel."
8 Houchaï ajouta: “Tu sais que ton père et ses compagnons sont courageux, ils sont enragés comme une ourse en liberté à qui on a enlevé ses petits, ou comme la truie sauvage dans les champs. Ton père est un homme de guerre, il ne laissera pas l’armée fermer l’œil;	8 And he went on to say: "You know that your father and his men are warriors, and that they are as fierce as a bear in the wild robbed of her cubs. Moreover, since your father is skilled in warfare, he will not spend the night with the people.
9 en ce moment il est sûrement caché dans quelque grotte ou dans quelque autre lieu. Si les nôtres ont des pertes dès le début, il y aura des rumeurs et l’on dira: L’armée d’Absalom a subi une défaite.	9 Even now he lies hidden in one of the caves or in some other place. And if some of our soldiers should fall at the first attack, whoever hears of it will say, 'Absalom's followers have been slaughtered.'
10 Alors, même les plus braves, ceux qui ont un cœur de lion, se décourageront. “Tout Israël le sait bien, ton père est brave et tous ceux qui sont avec lui sont des hommes courageux.	10 Then even the brave man with the heart of a lion will lose courage. For all Israel knows that your father is a warrior and that those who are with him are brave.
11 C’est pourquoi voici mon conseil: Que tout Israël se rassemble autour de toi, de Dan jusqu’à Bersabée, aussi nombreux que les grains de sable au bord de la mer, et toi, tu marcheras en personne au milieu d’eux.	11 "This is what I counsel: Let all Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba, who are as numerous as the sands by the sea, be called up for combat; and go with them yourself.
12 Nous arriverons sur lui en quelque lieu où il se trouve, nous nous poserons sur eux comme la rosée tombe sur le sol et nous ne laisserons en vie ni lui ni aucun de ses compagnons.	12 We can then attack him wherever we find him, settling down upon him as dew alights on the ground. None shall survive--neither he nor any of his followers.
13 S’il s’enferme dans une ville, tout Israël apportera des cordes pour tirer cette ville jusqu’au torrent, au point que l’on n’y trouvera plus même un caillou.”	13 And if he retires into a city, all Israel shall bring ropes to that city and we can drag it into the gorge, so that not even a pebble of it can be found."
14 Absalom et tous les gens d’Israël s’écrièrent: “Le conseil de Houchaï l’Arkite est meilleur que celui d’Ahitofel.” C’est que Yahvé avait décidé de faire échouer le conseil d’Ahitofel, qui était le bon; Yahvé voulait amener le malheur sur Absalom.	14 Then Absalom and all the Israelites pronounced the counsel of Hushai the Archite better than that of Ahithophel. For the LORD had decided to undo Ahithophel's good counsel, in order thus to bring Absalom to ruin.
15 Houchaï dit alors aux prêtres Sadoq et Ébyatar: “Ahitofel a donné ce conseil à Absalom et aux anciens d’Israël, mais moi, voilà ce que je leur ai conseillé.	15 Then Hushai said to the priests Zadok and Abiathar: "This is the counsel Ahithophel gave Absalom and the elders of Israel, and this is what I counseled.
16 Maintenant allez vite prévenir David. Dites-lui: ‘Ne t’attarde pas cette nuit dans les défilés du désert. Dépêche-toi de traverser, sinon le roi et toute l’armée seront anéantis.’ ”	16 So send a warning to David immediately, not to spend the night at the fords near the desert, but to cross over without fail. Otherwise the king and all the people with him will be destroyed."
17 Yonathan et Ahimaas étaient postés près de la source du Foulon. Une servante devait les prévenir pour qu’ils aillent porter la nouvelle au roi, car ils ne voulaient pas entrer en ville et se faire voir.	17 Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz were staying at En-rogel, since they could not risk being seen entering the city. A maidservant was to come with information for them, and they in turn were to go and report to King David.
18 Mais un jeune homme les vit et il informa Absalom. Alors ils s’enfuirent tous les deux et se réfugièrent chez un homme de Bahourim. Dans la cour il y avait une citerne où ils s’enfermèrent.	18 But an attendant saw them and informed Absalom. They sped on their way and reached the house of a man in Bahurim who had a cistern in his courtyard. They let themselves down into this,
19 La femme prit une bâche, elle l’étendit sur l’ouverture de la citerne et étala dessus du grain, si bien que l’on ne voyait plus rien.	19 and the housewife took the cover and spread it over the cistern, strewing ground grain on the cover so that nothing could be noticed.
20 Les serviteurs d’Absalom arrivèrent chez cette femme et lui demandèrent: “Où sont Ahimaas et Yonathan?” La femme leur répondit: “Ils ont continué leur route vers le Jourdain.” Ils cherchèrent et, ne trouvant rien, ils revinrent à Jérusalem.	20 When Absalom's servants came to the woman at the house, they asked, "Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?" The woman replied, "They went by a short while ago toward the water." They searched, but found no one, and so returned to Jerusalem.
21 Après leur départ, Ahimaas et Yonathan sortirent de la citerne et allèrent prévenir le roi David: “Mettez-vous en route, dépêchez-vous de traverser, car voilà le conseil qu’Ahitofel a donné à votre sujet.”	21 As soon as they left, Ahimaaz and Jonathan came up out of the cistern and went on to inform King David. They said to him: "Leave! Cross the water at once, for Ahithophel has given the following counsel in regard to you."
22 David et toute l’armée qui l’accompagnait se mirent donc en route, ils passèrent le Jourdain et à l’aube tout le monde avait traversé le Jourdain.	22 So David and all his people moved on and crossed the Jordan. By daybreak, there was no one left who had not crossed.
23 Lorsque Ahitofel vit que son conseil n’était pas suivi, il sella son âne et rentra chez lui dans sa ville, il mit de l’ordre dans sa maison et se pendit. C’est ainsi qu’il mourut et on l’enterra dans le tombeau de son père.	23 When Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not acted upon, he saddled his ass and departed, going to his home in his own city. Then, having left orders concerning his family, he hanged himself. And so he died and was buried in his father's tomb.
24 David arriva à Mahanayim tandis qu’Absalom franchissait le Jourdain avec tous les Israélites.	24 Now David had gone to Mahanaim when Absalom crossed the Jordan accompanied by all the Israelites.
25 Absalom avait mis Amasa à la tête de l’armée à la place de Joab. (Amasa était fils de Yitra l’Ismaélite: cet homme s’était uni à Abigayil, fille de Jessé et sœur de Sérouya, la mère de Joab).	25 Absalom had put Amasa in command of the army in Joab's place. Amasa was the son of an Ishmaelite named Ithra, who had married Abigail, daughter of Jesse and sister of Joab's mother Zeruiah.
26 Israël et Absalom établirent leur camp dans le pays de Galaad.	26 Israel and Absalom encamped in the territory of Gilead.
27 Lorsque David arriva à Mahanayim, Chobi, fils de Nahach, de Rabba des Ammonites, Makir, fils d’Ammiel de Lo-Débar, et Barzillaï de Roglim en Galaad	27 When David came to Mahanaim, Shobi, son of Nahash from Rabbah of the Ammonites, Machir, son of Ammiel from Lodebar, and Barzillai, the Gileadite from Rogelim,
28 apportèrent des paillasses, des tapis, des coupes et de la vaisselle. Ils apportèrent aussi du blé et de l’orge, de la farine, des grains grillés, des fèves et des lentilles,	28 brought couches, coverlets, basins and earthenware, as well as wheat, barley, flour, roasted grain, beans, lentils,
29 du miel et du lait caillé, des fromages de brebis et de vache, pour la nourriture de David et du peuple qui l’accompagnait. Ils s’étaient dit en effet: “Après la marche dans le désert, ce peuple doit être fatigué, il a faim et il a soif.”	29 honey, butter and cheese from the flocks and herds, for David and those who were with him to eat; for they said, "The people have been hungry and tired and thirsty in the desert."
