1 Therefore, set aside all malice and all deceitfulness, as well as falseness and envy and every detraction.	1 Deixando, pois, toda a malícia, todo o engano, dissimulações, invejas e toda a sorte de detrações,
2 Like newborn infants, desire the milk of reasonableness without guile, so that by this you may increase unto salvation,	2 como meninos recém-nascidos, desejai ardentemente o puro leite espiritual, para, por meio dele, crescerdes para a salvação —
3 if it is true that you have tasted that the Lord is sweet.	3 se é que saboreastes como é doce o Senhor (Ps. 33, 9)
4 And approaching him as if he were a living stone, rejected by men, certainly, but elect and honored by God,	4 Aproximai-vos dele, pedra viva, rejeitada pelos homens, mas escolhida e honrada por Deus,
5 be also yourselves like living stones, built upon him, a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, so as to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.	5 e vós também, como pedras vivas, prestai-vos a entrar na edificação de uma casa espiritual, para formar assim o sacerdócio santo para oferecer sacrifícios espirituais, agradáveis a Deus por Jesus Cristo.
6 Because of this, Scripture asserts: “Behold, I am setting in Zion a chief cornerstone, elect, precious. And whoever will have believed in him will not be confounded.”	6 Por isso se lê na Escritura: Eis que ponho em Sião uma pedra angular, escolhida, preciosa, e o que confiar nela não será confundido (Is. 28, 16).
7 Therefore, to you who believe, he is honor. But to those who do not believe, the stone which the builders have rejected, the same has been made into the head of the corner,	7 Honra, pois, a vós, crentes; para os incrédulos, porém, a pedra que os construtores regeitaram tornou-se cabeça do ângulo,
8 and a stone of offense, and a rock of scandal, to those who are offended by the Word; neither do they believe, though they also have been built upon him.	8 pedra de tropeço e pedra de escândalo (Ps. 117, 22; Is. 8, 14). Eles tropeçam, porque se recusam a crer na palavra (do Evangelho): é a isso que estão destinados.
9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, an acquired people, so that you may announce the virtues of him who has called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.	9 Vós, porém, sois uma geração escolhida, um sacerdócio real, uma gente santa, um povo adquirido por Deus, para que publiqueis as perfeições daquele que das trevas vos chamou à luz admirável.
10 Though in past times you were not a people, yet now you are the people of God. Though you had not obtained mercy, yet now you have obtained mercy.	10 Vós, que outrora não éreis seu povo, agora sois povo de Deus: vós, que não tínheis alcançado misericórdia (Os. 2, 23), agora alcançastes misericórdia.
11 Most beloved, I beg you, as new arrivals and sojourners, to abstain from carnal desires, which battle against the soul.	11 Carrissimos, rogo-vos que, como estrangeiros e peregrinos (que sois neste mundo), vos abstenhais dos desejos carnais que combatem contra a alma.
12 Keep your behavior among the Gentiles to what is good, so that, when they slander you as if you were evildoers, they may, by the good works that are seen in you, glorify God on the day of visitation.	12 Tende bom proceder entre os gentios, para que, naquilo mesmo sobre que vos caluniam como malfeitores, cheguem, reparando nas vossas boas obras, a dar glória a Deus no dia em que os visitar (chamando-os à fé).
13 Therefore, be subject to every human creature because of God, whether it is to the king as preeminent,	13 Sede submissos a toda a instituição humana, por causa do Senhor, quer ao rei, como a soberano,
14 or to leaders as having been sent from him for vindication over evildoers, it is truly for the praise of what is good.	14 quer aos governadores, como enviados por ele para punir os malfeitores e louvar os bons,
15 For such is the will of God, that by doing good you may bring about the silence of imprudent and ignorant men,	15 porque a vontade de Deus é que, fazendo o bem, façais emudecer a ignorância dos homens insensatos.
16 in an open manner, and not as if cloaking malice with liberty, but like servants of God.	16 Procedei como homens livres, não como homens que têm a liberdade por véu para encobrir a malícia, mas como servos de Deus.
17 Honor everyone. Love brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.	17 Honrai a todos, amai os irmãos, temei a Deus, respeitai o rei.
18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and meek, but also to the unruly.	18 Servos, sede obedientes aos vossos senhores com grande respeito, não só aos bons e moderados, mas também aos de carácter difícil,
19 For this is grace: when, because of God, a man willingly endures sorrows, suffering injustice.	19 porque é uma coisa agradável a Deus o suportar alguém contrariedades, sofrendo injustamente pelo conhecimento do que deve a Deus.
20 For what glory is there, if you sin and then suffer a beating? But if you do well and suffer patiently, this is grace with God.	20 Efetivamente, que glória (mereceis) se, depois de ter cometido uma falta, suportais pacientemente a punição? Mas, se fazendo bem, sofreis com paciência, isto é que é agradável diante de Deus.
21 For you have been called to this because Christ also suffered for us, leaving you an example, so that you would follow in his footsteps.	21 Com efeito para isto é que vós fostes chamados, pois que Cristo também sofreu por vós deixando-vos o exemplo, para que sigais as suas pisadas,
22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth.	22 ele que não cometeu pecado, e em cuja boca se não encontrou engano (Is. 53, 9);
23 And when evil was spoken against him, he did not speak evil. When he suffered, he did not threaten. Then he handed himself over to him who judged him unjustly.	23 quando o injuriavam, não injuriava, sofrendo, não ameaçava, mas entregava-se ao justo Juiz;
24 He himself bore our sins in his body upon the tree, so that we, having died to sin, would live for justice. By his wounds, you have been healed.	24 foi ele mesmo que levou os nossos pecados em seu corpo sobre o madeiro (da cruz), a fim de que, mortos para os pecados, vivamos para a justiça: por suas chagas fostes sarados (Is. 53, 5).
25 For you were like wandering sheep. But now you have been turned back toward the Pastor and the Bishop of your souls.	25 Porque vós éreis como ovelhas desgarradas, mas agora vos convertestes aos pastor e guarda das vossas almas.
