1 Therefore, set aside all malice and all deceitfulness, as well as falseness and envy and every detraction.	1 Deponde, pois, toda malícia, toda astúcia, fingimentos, invejas e toda espécie de maledicência.
2 Like newborn infants, desire the milk of reasonableness without guile, so that by this you may increase unto salvation,	2 Como crianças recém-nascidas, desejai com ardor o leite espiritual que vos fará crescer para a salvação,
3 if it is true that you have tasted that the Lord is sweet.	3 se é que tendes saboreado quão suave é o Senhor ( Sl 33,9 ).
4 And approaching him as if he were a living stone, rejected by men, certainly, but elect and honored by God,	4 Achegai-vos a ele, pedra viva que os homens rejeitaram, mas escolhida e preciosa aos olhos de Deus;
5 be also yourselves like living stones, built upon him, a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, so as to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.	5 e quais outras pedras vivas, vós também vos tornais os materiais deste edifício espiritual, um sacerdócio santo, para oferecer vítimas espirituais, agradáveis a Deus, por Jesus Cristo.
6 Because of this, Scripture asserts: “Behold, I am setting in Zion a chief cornerstone, elect, precious. And whoever will have believed in him will not be confounded.”	6 Por isso lê-se na Escritura: Eis que ponho em Sião uma pedra angular, escolhida, preciosa: quem nela puser sua confian­ça não será confundido ( Is 28,16 ).
7 Therefore, to you who believe, he is honor. But to those who do not believe, the stone which the builders have rejected, the same has been made into the head of the corner,	7 Para vós, portanto, que tendes crido, cabe a honra. Mas, para os incrédulos, a pedra que os edificadores rejeita­ram tornou-se a pedra angular, uma pedra de tropeço, uma pedra de escândalo ( Sl 117,22 ; Is 8,14 ).
8 and a stone of offense, and a rock of scandal, to those who are offended by the Word; neither do they believe, though they also have been built upon him.	8 Nela tropeçam porque não obedecem à palavra; e realmente era tal o seu destino.
9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, an acquired people, so that you may announce the virtues of him who has called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.	9 Vós, porém, sois uma raça escolhi­da, um sacer­dócio régio, uma nação santa, um povo adquirido para Deus, a fim de que publiqueis as virtudes daquele que das trevas vos chamou à sua luz maravilhosa.
10 Though in past times you were not a people, yet now you are the people of God. Though you had not obtained mercy, yet now you have obtained mercy.	10 Vós que outrora não éreis seu povo, mas agora sois povo de Deus; vós que outrora não tínheis alcançado misericórdia ( Os 2,25 ), mas agora alcançastes misericórdia.
11 Most beloved, I beg you, as new arrivals and sojourners, to abstain from carnal desires, which battle against the soul.	11 Caríssimos, rogo-vos que, como estrangeiros e peregrinos, vos abstenhais dos desejos da carne, que combatem contra a alma.
12 Keep your behavior among the Gentiles to what is good, so that, when they slander you as if you were evildoers, they may, by the good works that are seen in you, glorify God on the day of visitation.	12 Comportai-vos nobremente entre os pagãos. Assim, naquilo em que vos caluniam como malfeitores, chegarão, considerando vossas boas obras, a glorificar a Deus no dia em que ele os visitar.
13 Therefore, be subject to every human creature because of God, whether it is to the king as preeminent,	13 Por amor do Senhor, sede submissos, pois, a toda autoridade humana,
14 or to leaders as having been sent from him for vindication over evildoers, it is truly for the praise of what is good.	14 quer ao rei como a soberano, quer aos governadores como enviados por ele para castigo dos malfeitores e para favorecer as pessoas honestas.
15 For such is the will of God, that by doing good you may bring about the silence of imprudent and ignorant men,	15 Porque esta é a vontade de Deus que, praticando o bem, façais emudecer a ignorância dos insensatos.
16 in an open manner, and not as if cloaking malice with liberty, but like servants of God.	16 Comportai-vos como homens livres, e não à maneira dos que tomam a liberdade como véu para encobrir a malícia, mas vivendo como servos de Deus.
17 Honor everyone. Love brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.	17 Sede educados para com todos, amai os irmãos, temei a Deus, respeitai o rei.
18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and meek, but also to the unruly.	18 Servos, sede obedientes aos senhores com todo o respeito, não só aos bons e moderados, mas também aos de caráter difícil.
19 For this is grace: when, because of God, a man willingly endures sorrows, suffering injustice.	19 Com efeito, é coisa agradável a Deus sofrer contrariedades e padecer injustamente, por motivo de consciência para com Deus.
20 For what glory is there, if you sin and then suffer a beating? But if you do well and suffer patiently, this is grace with God.	20 Que mérito teria alguém se suportasse pacientemente os açoites por ter praticado o mal? Ao contrário, se é por ter feito o bem que sois maltratados, e se o suportardes pacientemente, isso é coisa agradável aos olhos de Deus.
21 For you have been called to this because Christ also suffered for us, leaving you an example, so that you would follow in his footsteps.	21 Ora, é para isso que fostes­ chamados. Também Cristo pa­deceu por vós, deixando-vos exemplo para que sigais os seus passos.
22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth.	22 Ele não cometeu pecado, nem se achou falsidade em sua boca ( Is 53,9 ).
23 And when evil was spoken against him, he did not speak evil. When he suffered, he did not threaten. Then he handed himself over to him who judged him unjustly.	23 Ele, ultrajado, não retribuía com idêntico ultraje; ele, maltratado, não proferia ameaças, mas entregava-se àquele que julga com justiça.
24 He himself bore our sins in his body upon the tree, so that we, having died to sin, would live for justice. By his wounds, you have been healed.	24 Carregou os nossos pecados em seu corpo sobre o madeiro para que, mortos aos nossos pecados, vivamos para a justiça. Por fim, por suas chagas fomos curados ( Is 53,5 ).
25 For you were like wandering sheep. But now you have been turned back toward the Pastor and the Bishop of your souls.	25 Porque éreis como ovelhas desgarradas, mas agora retornastes ao Pastor e guarda das vossas almas.
