1 Ki olyan, mint a bölcs, és ki találja meg a dolgok nyitját? Az ember bölcsessége derűssé teszi arcát, és meglágyítja a vonások keménységét.	1 Who is like the wise man? And who knows the interpretation of a thing? A man's wisdom makes his face shine, and the hardness of his countenance is changed.
2 Azt mondom: Figyelj a király szájára, s az Istennek tett eskü parancsára!	2 Keep the king's command, and because of your sacred oath be not dismayed;
3 Ne siess, hogy a színe elől eltávozz! Ne tarts ki veszett ügy mellett, mert ő mindent megtesz, amit csak akar,	3 go from his presence, do not delay when the matter is unpleasant, for he does whatever he pleases.
4 mivel a király szava hatalommal teljes, és ki mondhatná neki: »Miért teszed?«	4 For the word of the king is supreme, and who may say to him, "What are you doing?"
5 Aki megtartja a parancsot, nem tapasztal rosszat, a bölcsnek szíve pedig tudja, hogy eljön a számadás ideje.	5 He who obeys a command will meet no harm, and the mind of a wise man will know the time and way.
6 Mert minden dolog számára van idő és ítélet, csakhogy súlyosan nehezedik az emberre a baj.	6 For every matter has its time and way, although man's trouble lies heavy upon him.
7 Nem tudja ugyanis, mi fog még történni, és nincs, aki megmondja neki, miként lesz majd.	7 For he does not know what is to be, for who can tell him how it will be?
8 Nincs az ember hatalmában, hogy visszatartsa éltető leheletét, nincs a halál napján hatalma, és nincs a háború idején felmentés, s a gonoszság nem menti a gonoszt.	8 No man has power to retain the spirit, or authority over the day of death; there is no discharge from war, nor will wickedness deliver those who are given to it.
9 Mindezt láttam, amikor figyelmemet mindazokra a dolgokra irányítottam, amelyek a nap alatt végbemennek, amikor ember embertársa fölött, annak kárára uralkodik.	9 All this I observed while applying my mind to all that is done under the sun, while man lords it over man to his hurt.
10 Láttam továbbá, hogy díszes temetésben részesültek gonoszok, akik életükben is a szent helyen voltak, és magasztalták őket a városban, mintha cselekedeteik igazak lettek volna. – Az is hiúság,	10 Then I saw the wicked buried; they used to go in and out of the holy place, and were praised in the city where they had done such things. This also is vanity.
11 hogy nem mondják ki az ítéletet a gonosz fölött tüstént, ezért az emberek fiai a gonoszságot minden félelem nélkül cselekszik,	11 Because sentence against an evil deed is not executed speedily, the heart of the sons of men is fully set to do evil.
12 mivel a bűnös, aki a rosszat százszor is elköveti, sokáig marad életben irgalmasságból. Azt is tudom azonban, hogy az istenfélők, akik az ő színétől félnek, jól járnak,	12 Though a sinner does evil a hundred times and prolongs his life, yet I know that it will be well with those who fear God, because they fear before him;
13 és hogy nem lesz jó sora a gonosznak. Napjai nem hosszabbodnak meg, hanem, mint az árnyék, úgy múlnak el azok, akik az Úr színétől nem félnek. –	13 but it will not be well with the wicked, neither will he prolong his days like a shadow, because he does not fear before God.
14 Van még egy hiúság, amely a földön adódik: Vannak igazak, akiket bajok érnek, mintha a gonoszok tetteit cselekednék, és vannak gonoszok, akik biztonságban vannak, mintha az igazak cselekedetei náluk volnának. Megállapítottam, hogy ez is hiúság!	14 There is a vanity which takes place on earth, that there are righteous men to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked, and there are wicked men to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity.
15 Dicsértem ezért az örömet, mivel az embernek úgysincs egyéb java a nap alatt, minthogy egyék, igyék és örvendezzen. A fáradsága mellett hadd kísérje őt legalább ez élete napjain, amelyeket Isten adott neki a nap alatt.	15 And I commend enjoyment, for man has no good thing under the sun but to eat and drink, and enjoy himself, for this will go with him in his toil through the days of life which God gives him under the sun.
16 Amint elmémet arra irányítottam, hogy megismerjem a bölcsességet, és szemléljem a hajszát, amely a földön végbemegy, úgyhogy sem nappal, sem éjjel nem jön álom az ember szemére,	16 When I applied my mind to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done on earth, how neither day nor night one's eyes see sleep;
17 akkor Isten egész művét illetően azt láttam, hogy az ember nem tud annak végére járni, ami a nap alatt történik. Minél többet fárad az ember a keresésben, annál kevésbé tudja megtalálni, és ha a bölcs azt hiszi is, hogy tudja, mégsem jön a nyitjára.	17 then I saw all the work of God, that man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun. However much man may toil in seeking, he will not find it out; even though a wise man claims to know, he cannot find it out.
