| 1 E subito la mattina i capi dei sacerdoti con gli anziani e gli Scribi e tutto il Sinedrio, tenuto consiglio, dopo aver legato Gesù, lo conciassero e lo consegnarono a Pilato. | 1 And as soon as it was morning the chief priests, with the elders and scribes, and the whole council held a consultation; and they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him to Pilate. |
| 2 E Pilato gli domandò: Sei tu il Re dei Giudei? E Gesù rispose: Tu lo dici. | 2 And Pilate asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" And he answered him, "You have said so." |
| 3 Intanto i capi dei sacerdoti lo accusavano di molte cose. | 3 And the chief priests accused him of many things. |
| 4 Allora Pilato di nuovo lo interrogò dicendo: Non rispondi niente? Vedi di quante cose ti accusano! | 4 And Pilate again asked him, "Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you." |
| 5 Ma Gesù non rispose più nulla: talché Pilato se ne maravigliava. | 5 But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate wondered. |
| 6 Or per la festa soleva mandar libero uno dei carcerati, quello che chiedevano. | 6 Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. |
| 7 E ce n'era uno chiamato Barabba, legato tra i sediziosi, avendo commesso, in un tumulto, un omicidio. | 7 And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. |
| 8 E, salito, il popolo cominciò a chiedere che facesse allora come sempre aveva fatto. | 8 And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he was wont to do for them. |
| 9 E Pilato ad essi risposo: Volete che vi liberi, il re dei Giudei? | 9 And he answered them, "Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?" |
| 10 Sapeva bene che per invidia i capi dei sacerdoti l'avevano consegnato. | 10 For he perceived that it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up. |
| 11 Ma i capi dei sacerdoti istigarono il popolo a chiedere piuttosto la liberazione di Barabba. | 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead. |
| 12 E Pilato da capo a chieder loro: Che volete adunque ch'io faccia del Re dei Giudei? | 12 And Pilate again said to them, "Then what shall I do with the man whom you call the King of the Jews?" |
| 13 Ed essi di nuovo gridarono: Crocifiggilo. | 13 And they cried out again, "Crucify him." |
| 14 E Pilato a dir loro: E che male ha fatto? E quelli gridavano sempre più forte: Crocifìggilo. | 14 And Pilate said to them, "Why, what evil has he done?" But they shouted all the more, "Crucify him." |
| 15 E Pilato, volendo contentare il popolo, liberò loro Barabba; e Gesù, dopo averlo fatto flagellare, lo consegnò perchè fosse crocifisso. | 15 So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas; and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified. |
| 16 E i soldati lo condussero nell'atrio del pretorio e vi radunarono tutta la coorte. | 16 And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the praetorium); and they called together the whole battalion. |
| 17 Lo vestirono di porpora, e, intrecciata una corona di spine, gliela conficcarono | 17 And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and plaiting a crown of thorns they put it on him. |
| 18 e cominciarono a salutarlo: Salute, o Re dei Giudei, | 18 And they began to salute him, "Hail, King of the Jews!" |
| 19 e gli percuotevano il capo con una canna, e gli sputavano addosso, e piegando i ginocchi, l'adoravano. | 19 And they struck his head with a reed, and spat upon him, and they knelt down in homage to him. |
| 20 E dopo averlo schernito, lo spogliarono della porpora o gli misero le sue vesti, e lo menarono fuori per crocifìggerlo. | 20 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak, and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him. |
| 21 E costrinsero a portare la croce di lui un certo Simone cireneo, padre di Alessandro e di Rufo, il quale tornando dalla campagna, passava di lì a caso. | 21 And they compelled a passer-by, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. |
| 22 E menarono Gesù al luogo del Golgota, che, tradotto, significa il luogo del teschio. | 22 And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means the place of a skull). |
| 23 E gli dettero da bere del vino mirrato, ma non no preso. | 23 And they offered him wine mingled with myrrh; but he did not take it. |
| 24 Poi lo crocifìssero, e ne divisero le vesti, tirandole a sorte, per sapere quel che toccasse a ciascuno. | 24 And they crucified him, and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. |
| 25 Era l'ora terza, quando lo crocifìssero. | 25 And it was the third hour, when they crucified him. |
| 26 C'era scritto sopra il titolo della sua condanna: Il Re dei Giudei. | 26 And the inscription of the charge against him read, "The King of the Jews." |
| 27 E con lui crocifìssero duo ladroni: uno alla sua destra, l'altro alla sua sinistra. | 27 And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left. |
| 28 Così fu adempita la Scrittura che dice: E' stato annoverato tra i malfattori. | 28 . |
| 29 E quelli che passavano lo bestemmiavano e dicevano crollando il capo: Ehi, tu che distruggi il tempio di Dio e in tre giorni lo riedifichi, | 29 And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads, and saying, "Aha! You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, |
| 30 salva te stesso e scendi dalla croce! | 30 save yourself, and come down from the cross!" |
| 31 Nello stesso modo anche i capi dei sacerdoti e gli Scribi, facendosi beffe di lui, dicevano tra di loro: Ha salvato gli altri e non può salvare se stesso! | 31 So also the chief priests mocked him to one another with the scribes, saying, "He saved others; he cannot save himself. |
| 32 Il Cristo, il Re d'Israele scenda ora dalla croce, affinchè vediamo e crediamo. Anche quelli crocifìssi con lui lo beffeggiavano. | 32 Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe." Those who were crucified with him also reviled him. |
| 33 E venuta l'ora sesta, lo tenebre coprirono la terra fino all'ora nona. | 33 And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. |
| 34 E all'ora nona Gesù esclamò con gran voce: Eloi, Eloi, lamma sabactani? che tradotto significa: Dio mio, Dio mio, perchè mi hai abbandonato? | 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, "Elo-i, Elo-i, lama sabach-thani?" which means, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" |
| 35 E alcuni degli astanti, uditolo, dicevano: Ecco, chiama Elia. | 35 And some of the bystanders hearing it said, "Behold, he is calling Elijah." |
| 36 Ed uno corse, e inzuppata una spugna nell'aceto, e postala in cima ad una canna, gli dette da bere dicendo: Lasciate, vediamo se Elia viene a levarlo. | 36 And one ran and, filling a sponge full of vinegar, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, "Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down." |
| 37 Ma Gesù, emettendo un altissimo grido, spirò. | 37 And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed his last. |
| 38 E il velo del tempio si squarciò in due, da capo a fondo. | 38 And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. |
| 39 Ed il centurione, che gli stava di faccia, vedendo come fosso spirato, gridando altamente, esclamò: Questo uomo era veramente Figlio di Dio. | 39 And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that he thus breathed his last, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!" |
| 40 C'eran pure dello donne che da lontano osservavano, | 40 There were also women looking on from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome, |
| 41 tra le quali era Maria Maddalena o Maria madre di Giacomo il Minore e di Giuseppe, e Salome; queste, mentre egli era in Galilea, lo seguivano e lo servivano, e molte altre che erano venute a Gerusalemme insieme con lui. | 41 who, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered to him; and also many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem. |
| 42 E fattosi sera, ch'era la Parasceve, cioè la vigilia del sabato, | 42 And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath, |
| 43 Giuseppe d'Arimatea, nobile consigliere, che pure aspettava il regno di Dio, andò a presentarsi coraggiosamente a Pilato e gli chiese il corpo di Gesù. | 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. |
| 44 Pilato si maravigliò che fosse già spirato; e fatto chiamare il centurione, gli domandò se fosse già morto. | 44 And Pilate wondered if he were already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead. |
| 45 Ed essendo da lui stato rassicurato, donò il corpo a Giuseppe. | 45 And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the body to Joseph. |
| 46 E questi, comprato un lenzuolo, o deposto Gesù dalla croce, lo involse nel lenzuolo e io mise in un sepolcro scavato in un sasso, e rotolò una pietra alla bocca della tomba. | 46 And he bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud, and laid him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. |
| 47 E Maria Maddalena e Maria madre di Giuseppe stavano a guardare dove lo collocavano. | 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid. |
