LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Meglio un buon nome che un buon profumo e il giorno della morte che quello della nascita.	1 Better a good name than costly oil, the day of death than the day of birth.
2 Meglio andare in una casa dove si fa cordoglio, che in una casa dove si fa baldoria, perché è questa la fine di tutti gli uomini e il vivo così ci riflette.	2 Better go to the house of mourning than to the house of feasting; for to this end everyone comes, let theliving take this to heart.
3 Meglio la tristezza del riso, perché davanti a un volto triste il cuore si fa migliore.	3 Better sadness than laughter: a joyful heart may be concealed behind sad looks.
4 Il pensiero del sapiente è rivolto alla casa in cordoglio, il pensiero dello stolto alla casa in allegria.	4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, the heart of fools in the house of gaiety.
5 Meglio ascoltare il rimprovero del sapiente piuttosto che l'adulazione degli stolti,	5 Better attend to the reprimand of the wise than listen to a song sung by a fool.
6 perché come lo scoppiettio degli sterpi sotto la pentola, così è il riso dello stolto. Ma anche questo è vanità,	6 For like the crackling of thorns under the cauldron is the laughter of fools: and that too is futile.
7 perché l'oppressione può rendere stolto il sapiente, e un donativo può corrompere il cuore.	7 But being oppressed drives a sage mad, and a present corrupts the heart.
8 Meglio la fine di una cosa che il suo inizio, meglio la longanimità che la superbia.	8 Better the end of a matter than its beginning, better patience than ambition.
9 Non essere facile ad irritarti nell'intimo, perché l'irritazione ha sede nel seno degli stolti.	9 Do not be too easily exasperated, for exasperation dwel s in the heart of fools.
10 Non ti domandare com'è che il tempo passato è migliore di quello di oggi, perché questo problema non viene da saggezza.	10 Do not ask why the past was better than the present, for this is not a question prompted by wisdom.
11 E' bene avere oltre alla sapienza un patrimonio: è un vantaggio per quelli che vedono il sole,	11 Wisdom is as good as a legacy, profitable to those who enjoy the light of the sun.
12 perché si vive all'ombra della sapienza, si vive all'ombra del danaro; ma vale di più il sapere, perché la sapienza fa vivere chi la possiede.	12 For as money protects, so does wisdom, and the advantage of knowledge is this: that wisdom bestowslife on those who possess her.
13 Cerca di capire l'opera di Dio, perché nessuno può raddrizzare ciò che egli ha fatto curvo.	13 Consider God's creation: who, for instance, can straighten what God has bent?
14 Nei giorni felici sii lieto, nei giorni del dolore rifletti: gli uni come gli altri vengono per volere di Dio, perché l'uomo non possa sapere mai nulla del proprio futuro.	14 When things are going wel , enjoy yourself, and when they are going badly, consider this: God hasdesigned the one no less than the other so that we should take nothing for granted.
15 Tutto ho veduto nei giorni miei vani. C'è il giusto che perisce nonostante la sua giustizia, e l'empio che vive a lungo nonostante la sua malvagità.	15 In my futile life, I have seen everything: the upright person perishing in uprightness and the wickedperson surviving in wickedness.
16 Cerca perciò di non essere né troppo giusto né troppo saggio, se non vuoi perire.	16 Do not be upright to excess and do not make yourself unduly wise: why should you destroy yourself?
17 Ma non essere nemmeno troppo cattivo né troppo stolto, se non vuoi perire prima del tuo tempo.	17 Do not be wicked to excess, and do not be a fool: why die before your time?
18 E' bene che tu stia attaccato a una cosa, ma che tu non ti discosti nemmeno dall'altra. Quel che conta è che tu tema Dio, e riuscirai in entrambe le cose.	18 It is wise to hold on to one and not let go of the other, since the godfearing wil find both.
19 La sapienza rappresenta per il saggio una forza maggiore di quella di dieci potenti in una città,	19 Wisdom makes the wise stronger than a dozen governors in a city.
20 per quanto sulla terra non ci sia nessun uomo che sia giusto, che faccia il bene senza peccare.	20 No one on earth is sufficiently upright to do good without ever sinning.
21 Inoltre, non prestare attenzione a tutte le parole che si dicono, perché non ti capiti di sentire il tuo servo parlar male di te,	21 Again, do not listen to all that people say, then you wil not hear your servant abusing you.
22 ché la tua coscienza sa che anche tu, molte volte, hai parlato male degli altri.	22 For often, as you very wel know, you have abused others.
23 Poiché è con la sapienza che avevo fatte tutte queste considerazioni, decisi di diventare sapiente, ma la sapienza era lontana da me.	23 Thanks to wisdom, I have found all this to be true; I resolved to be wise, but this was beyond myreach!
24 Lontano è il reale ed estremamente profondo. Nessuno ne verrà a capo.	24 The past is out of reach, buried deep -- who can discover it?
25 Allora mi detti a riflettere nel mio cuore per cercare la sapienza e l'interpretazione delle cose, facendo esperienza del male, dell'insipienza, della stoltezza e della follia.	25 But I have reached the point where, having learnt, explored and investigated wisdom and reflection, Irecognise evil as being a form of madness, and fol y as something stupid.
26 E questo ho trovato, che la donna è più amara della morte, perché essa è un laccio, il suo cuore è una rete e catene le sue braccia. Chi è gradito a Dio ne può scampare, ma il peccatore ci resta preso.	26 And I find woman more bitter than Death, she is a snare, her heart is a net, and her arms are chains.The man who is pleasing to God eludes her, but the sinner is captured by her.
27 Ecco, questo è ciò che ho trovato, ha detto Qohèlet, nel cercare la ragione di tutto, cosa per cosa:	27 This is what I think, says Qoheleth, having examined one thing after another to draw some conclusion,
28 aquello che cerco, non l'ho trovato.	28 which I am still looking for, although unsuccessful y: one man in a thousand, I may find, but a womanbetter than other women-never.
29 Ma questo l'ho trovato: Dio ha fatto l'uomo semplice; è lui che va in cerca di tanti e tanti perché.	29 This alone is my conclusion: God has created man straightforward, and human artifices are humaninventions.
