And when he had descended from the mountain, great crowds followed him.1 Cuando bajó del monte, fue siguiéndole una gran muchedumbre.
And behold, a leper, drawing near, adored him, saying, “Lord, if you are willing, you are able to cleanse me.”2 En esto, un leproso se acercó y se postró ante él, diciendo: «Señor, si quieres puedes limpiarme».
And Jesus, extending his hand, touched him, saying: “I am willing. Be cleansed.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.3 El extendió la mano, le tocó y dijo: «Quiero, queda limpio». Y al instante quedó limpio de su lepra.
And Jesus said to him: “See to it that you tell no one. But go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses instructed, as a testimony for them.”4 Y Jesús le dice: «Mira, no se los digas a nadie, sino vete, muéstrate al sacerdote y presenta la ofrenda que prescribió Moisés, para que les sirva de testimonio.
And when he had entered into Capernaum, a centurion approached, petitioning him,5 Al entrar en Cafarnaúm, se le acercó un centurión y le rogó
and saying, “Lord, my servant lies at home paralyzed and badly tormented.”6 diciendo: «Señor, mi criado yace en casa paralítico con terribles sufrimientos».
And Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.”7 Dícele Jesús: «Yo iré a curarle».
And responding, the centurion said: “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant shall be healed.8 Replicó el centurión: «Señor, no soy digno de que entres bajo mi techo; basta que lo digas de palabra y mi criado quedará sano.
For I, too, am a man placed under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”9 Porque también yo, que soy un subalterno, tengo soldados a mis órdenes, y digo a éste: “Vete”, y va; y a otro: “Ven”, y viene; y a mi siervo: “Haz esto”, y lo hace».
And, hearing this, Jesus wondered. And he said to those following him: “Amen I say to you, I have not found so great a faith in Israel.10 Al oír esto Jesús quedó admirado y dijo a los que le seguían: «Os aseguro que en Israel no he encontrado en nadie una fe tan grande.
For I say to you, that many shall come from the east and the west, and they shall sit at table with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.11 Y os digo que vendrán muchos de oriente y occidente y se pondrán a la mesa con Abraham, Isaac y Jacob en el reino de los Cielos,
But the sons of the kingdom shall be cast into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”12 mientras que los hijos del Reino serán echados a las tinieblas de fuera; allí será el llanto y el rechinar de dientes».
And Jesus said to the centurion, “Go, and just as you have believed, so let it be done for you.” And the servant was healed at that very hour.13 Y dijo Jesús al centurión: «Anda; que te suceda como has creído». Y en aquella hora sanó el criado.
And when Jesus had arrived at the house of Peter, he saw his mother-in-law lying ill with a fever.14 Al llegar Jesús a casa de Pedro, vio a la suegra de éste en cama, con fiebre.
And he touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose up and ministered to them.15 Le tocó la mano y la fiebre la dejó; y se levantó y se puso a servirle.
And when evening arrived, they brought to him many who had demons, and he cast out the spirits with a word. And he healed all those having maladies,16 Al atardecer, le trajeron muchos endemoniados; él expulsó a los espíritus con una palabra, y curó a todos los enfermos,
in order to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah, saying, “He took our infirmities, and he carried away our diseases.”17 para que se cumpliera el oráculo del profeta Isaías: El tomó nuestras flaquezas y cargó con nuestras enfermedades.
Then Jesus, seeing the great crowds encircling him, gave orders to go across the sea.18 Viéndose Jesús rodeado de la muchedumbre, mandó pasar a la otra orilla.
And one scribe, approaching, said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you will go.”19 Y un escriba se acercó y le dijo: «Maestro, te seguiré adondequiera que vayas».
And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have dens, and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man has nowhere to rest his head.”20 Dícele Jesús: «Las zorras tienen guaridas, y las aves del cielo nidos; pero el Hijo del hombre no tiene donde reclinar la cabeza».
Then another of his disciples said to him, “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.”21 Otro de los discípulos le dijo: «Señor, déjame ir primero a enterrar a mi padre».
But Jesus said to him, “Follow me, and allow the dead to bury their dead.”22 Dícele Jesús: «Sígueme, y deja que los muertos entierren a sus muertos».
And climbing into a boat, his disciples followed him.23 Subió a la barca y sus discípulos le siguieron.
And behold, a great tempest occurred in the sea, so much so that the boat was covered with waves; yet truly, he was sleeping.24 De pronto se levantó en el mar una tempestad tan grande que la barca quedaba tapada por las olas; pero él estaba dormido.
And his disciples drew near to him, and they awakened him, saying: “Lord, save us, we are perishing.”25 Acercándose ellos le despertaron diciendo: «¡Señor, sálvanos, que perecemos!»
And Jesus said to them, “Why are you afraid, O little in faith?” Then rising up, he commanded the winds, and the sea. And a great tranquility occurred.26 Díceles: «¿Por qué tenéis miedo, hombres de poca fe?» Entonces se levantó, increpó a los vientos y al mar, y sobrevino una gran bonanza.
Moreover, the men wondered, saying: “What kind of man is this? For even the winds and the sea obey him.”27 Y aquellos hombres, maravillados, decían: «¿Quién es éste, que hasta los vientos y el mar le obedecen?»
And when he had arrived across the sea, into the region of the Gerasenes, he was met by two who had demons, who were so exceedingly savage, as they went out from among the tombs, that no one was able to cross by that way.28 Al llegar a la otra orilla, a la región de los gadarenos, vinieron a su encuentro dos endemoniados que salían de los sepulcros, y tan furiosos que nadie era capaz de pasar por aquel camino.
And behold, they cried out, saying: “What are we to you, O Jesus, the Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?”29 Y se pusieron a gritar: «¿Qué tenemos nosotros contigo, Hijo de Dios? ¿Has venido aquí para atormentarnos antes de tiempo?»
Now there was, not far from them, a herd of many swine feeding.30 Había allí a cierta distancia una gran piara de puercos paciendo.
Then the demons petitioned him, saying: “If you cast us from here, send us into the herd of swine.”31 Y le suplicaban los demonios: «Si nos echas, mándanos a esa piara de puercos».
And he said to them, “Go.” And they, going out, went into the swine. And behold, the entire herd suddenly rushed along a steep place into the sea. And they died in the waters.32 El les dijo: «Id». Saliendo ellos, se fueron a los puercos, y de pronto toda la piara se arrojó al mar precipicio abajo, y perecieron en las aguas.
Then the shepherds fled, and arriving in the city, they reported on all this, and on those who had had the demons.33 Los porqueros huyeron, y al llegar a la ciudad lo contaron todo y también lo de los endemoniados.
And behold, the entire city went out to meet Jesus. And having seen him, they petitioned him, so that he would cross from their borders.34 Y he aquí que toda la ciudad salió al encuentro de Jesús y, en viéndole, le rogaron que se retirase de su término.
