Matthew 20

1 “The kingdom of heaven is like the father of a family who went out in early morning to lead workers into his vineyard.	1 'Now the kingdom of Heaven is like a landowner going out at daybreak to hire workers for his vineyard.
2 Then, having made an agreement with the workers for one denarius per day, he sent them into his vineyard.	2 He made an agreement with the workers for one denarius a day and sent them to his vineyard.
3 And going out about the third hour, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace.	3 Going out at about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the market place
4 And he said to them, ‘You may go into my vineyard, too, and what I will give you will be just.’	4 and said to them, "You go to my vineyard too and I wil give you a fair wage."
5 So they went forth. But again, he went out about the sixth, and about the ninth hour, and he acted similarly.	5 So they went. At about the sixth hour and again at about the ninth hour, he went out and did the same.
6 Yet truly, about the eleventh hour, he went out and found others standing, and he said to them, ‘Why have you stood here idle all day?’	6 Then at about the eleventh hour he went out and found more men standing around, and he said tothem, "Why have you been standing here idle all day?"
7 They say to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You also may go into my vineyard.’	7 "Because no one has hired us," they answered. He said to them, "You go into my vineyard too."
8 And when evening had arrived, the lord of the vineyard said to his manager, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning from the last, even to the first.’	8 In the evening, the owner of the vineyard said to his bailiff, "Call the workers and pay them theirwages, starting with the last arrivals and ending with the first."
9 And so, when those who had arrived about the eleventh hour came forward, each received a single denarius.	9 So those who were hired at about the eleventh hour came forward and received one denarius each.
10 Then when the first ones also came forward, they considered that they would receive more. But they, too, received one denarius.	10 When the first came, they expected to get more, but they too received one denarius each.
11 And upon receiving it, they murmured against the father of the family,	11 They took it, but grumbled at the landowner saying,
12 saying, ‘These last have worked for one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who worked bearing the weight and heat of the day.’	12 "The men who came last have done only one hour, and you have treated them the same as us,though we have done a heavy day's work in al the heat."
13 But responding to one of them, he said: ‘Friend, I caused you no injury. Did you not agree with me to one denarius?	13 He answered one of them and said, "My friend, I am not being unjust to you; did we not agree on onedenarius?
14 Take what is yours and go. But it is my will to give to this last, just as to you.	14 Take your earnings and go. I choose to pay the lastcomer as much as I pay you.
15 And is it not lawful for me to do what I will? Or is your eye wicked because I am good?’	15 Have I no right to do what I like with my own? Why should you be envious because I am generous?"
16 So then, the last shall be first, and the first shall be last. For many are called, but few are chosen.”	16 Thus the last wil be first, and the first, last.'
17 And Jesus, ascending to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples aside in private and said to them:	17 Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, and on the road he took the Twelve aside by themselves and saidto them,
18 “Behold, we are ascending to Jerusalem, and the Son of man shall be handed over to the leaders of the priests and to the scribes. And they shall condemn him to death.	18 'Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man is about to be handed over to the chiefpriests and scribes. They wil condemn him to death
19 And they shall hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified. And on the third day, he shall rise again.”	19 and will hand him over to the gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified; and on the third dayhe wil be raised up again.'
20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee approached him, with her sons, adoring him, and petitioning something from him.	20 Then the mother of Zebedee's sons came with her sons to make a request of him, and bowed low;
21 And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Declare that these, my two sons, may sit, one at your right hand, and the other at your left, in your kingdom.”	21 and he said to her, 'What is it you want?' She said to him, 'Promise that these two sons of mine maysit one at your right hand and the other at your left in your kingdom.'
22 But Jesus, responding, said: “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink from the chalice, from which I will drink?” They said to him, “We are able.”	22 Jesus answered, 'You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am going todrink?' They replied, 'We can.'
23 He said to them: “From my chalice, indeed, you shall drink. But to sit at my right or my left is not mine to give to you, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”	23 He said to them, 'Very wel ; you shal drink my cup, but as for seats at my right hand and my left,these are not mine to grant; they belong to those to whom they have been al otted by my Father.'
24 And the ten, upon hearing this, became indignant with the two brothers.	24 When the other ten heard this they were indignant with the two brothers.
25 But Jesus called them to himself and said: “You know that the first ones among the Gentiles are their rulers, and that those who are greater exercise power among them.	25 But Jesus cal ed them to him and said, 'You know that among the gentiles the rulers lord it over them,and great men make their authority felt.
26 It shall not be this way among you. But whoever will want to be greater among you, let him be your minister.	26 Among you this is not to happen. No; anyone who wants to become great among you must be yourservant,
27 And whoever will want to be first among you, he shall be your servant,	27 and anyone who wants to be first among you must be your slave,
28 even as the Son of man has not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a redemption for many.”	28 just as the Son of man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.'
29 And as they were departing from Jericho, a great crowd followed him.	29 As they left Jericho a large crowd fol owed him.
30 And behold, two blind men, sitting by the way, heard that Jesus was passing by; and they cried out, saying, “Lord, Son of David, take pity on us.”	30 And now there were two blind men sitting at the side of the road. When they heard that it was Jesuswho was passing by, they shouted, 'Lord! Have pity on us, son of David.'
31 But the crowd rebuked them to be quiet. But they cried out all the more, saying, “Lord, Son of David, take pity on us.”	31 And the crowd scolded them and told them to keep quiet, but they only shouted the louder, 'Lord!Have pity on us, son of David.'
32 And Jesus stood still, and he called them and said, “What do you want, that I might do for you?”	32 Jesus stopped, cal ed them over and said, 'What do you want me to do for you?'
33 They said to him, “Lord, that our eyes be opened.”	33 They said to him, 'Lord, let us have our sight back.'
34 Then Jesus, taking pity on them, touched their eyes. And immediately they saw, and they followed him.	34 Jesus felt pity for them and touched their eyes, and at once their sight returned and they fol owedhim.
