Sirach 36

1 O God of all, take pity on us, and look with favor on us, and show us the light of your compassion.	1 Abbi pietà di noi, o Dio dell'universo, e guardaci, e mostraci la luce delle tue misericordie.
2 And send your fear upon the Gentiles, who have not sought you, so that they may acknowledge that there is no God except you, and so that they may declare your great deeds.	2 Spandi il tuo terrore sopra le genti che non ti han cercato, affinchè sappiano che non v'è altro Dio fuori di te e raccontino le tue maraviglie.
3 Lift up your hand over unbelieving nations, so that they may see your power.	3 Alza la tua mano contro le nazioni straniere, affinchè veggano la tua potenza.
4 For just as, in their sight, you have been sanctified in us, so also, in our sight, you will be magnified in them.	4 Come davanti a loro hai mostrato in noi la tua santità, così davanti a noi mostra sopra di loro la tua grandezza.
5 So may they know you, as we also have known you. For there is no God apart from you, O Lord.	5 Affinché riconoscano, come l'abbiamo riconosciuto noi, che non v'è altro Dio fuori di te, o Signore.
6 Renew your signs, and work new wonders.	6 Rinnova i miracoli, fai delle altre maraviglie,
7 Glorify your hand and your right arm.	7 glorifica la tua mano, il tuo braccio destro.
8 Stir up your fury, and pour out your wrath.	8 Eccita il furore, effondi l'ira,
9 Take away our adversary, and afflict our enemy.	9 distruggi l'avversario, annienta il nemico.
10 Hasten the time, and remember the end, so that they may declare your miracles.	10 Accelera il tempo, ricordati della fine, perchè sian celebrate le tue maraviglie.
11 Let those who escape be devoured by the wrath of fire. And let those who harass your people find perdition.	11 Gli scampati sian divorati dalla fiamma dell'ira, e quelli che maltrattano il tuo popolo trovino la perdizione.
12 Crush the head of the leaders of the enemies, for they say: “There is no other beside us.”	12 Schiaccia la testa dei principi nemici, che dicono: « Non ci siamo che noi! ».
13 Gather together all the tribes of Jacob, so that they may acknowledge that there is no God except you, and so that they may declare your great deeds. And you will inherit them, as from the beginning.	13 Raduna tutte le tribù di Giacobbe, affinchè riconoscano che non c'è altro Dio fuori di te e raccontino le tue maraviglie, e sian tua eredità come da principio.
14 Take pity on your people, over whom your name has been invoked, and on Israel, whom you have treated as your firstborn.	14 Abbi pietà del tuo popolo, sopra il quale è invocato il tuo nome, e d'Israele, che tu hai trattato come tuo primogenito.
15 Take pity on Jerusalem, the city of your sanctification, the city of your rest.	15 Abbi pietà della, città da te santificata, di Gerusalemme, città del tuo riposo.
16 Fill Zion with your ineffable words, and fill your people with your glory.	16 Riempi Sionne delle tue ineffabili parole, e il tuo popolo della tua gloria.
17 Give testimony to those who have been your creations from the beginning, and lift up the prophecies which the former prophets spoke in your name.	17 Rendi testimonianza a coloro che sono fin da principio tue creature, e fa rivivere le predizioni annunziate in nome tuo dagli antichi profeti.
18 Give a reward to those who endure for you, so that your prophets may be found to be faithful. And heed the prayers of your servants,	18 Ricompensa coloro che ti aspettano con pazienza, in modo che sian riconosciuti fedeli i tuoi profeti ed esaudisci le orazioni dei tuoi servi,
19 in accord with the blessing of Aaron over your people. And direct us in the way of justice, and let all who inhabit the earth know that you are God, the Beholder of all ages.	19 secondo la benedizione di Aronne sul tuo popolo; e guidaci nella via della giustizia, affinchè sappiano tutti gli abitatori della terra che tu sei il Dio scrutatore dei secoli.
20 The belly can devour any food, yet one meal is better than another.	20 Il ventre riceve ogni sorta di nutrimento, ma un cibo è migliore d'un altro.
21 The palate tests the meat of wild animals, and the understanding heart tests false words.	21 Il palato distingue la cacciagione, e il cuore assennato le parole menzognere.
22 A corrupt heart will cause grief, and a man of experience will resist it.	22 Il cuore perverso sarà causa di tristezza, ma l'uomo sapiente gli saprà resistere.
23 A woman can receive any male, yet one daughter is better than another.	23 La donna riceverà qualunque maschio, ma vi son delle fanciulle migliori di altre.
24 The beauty of a wife cheers the face of her husband, and rises above his desire, above all the desires of man.	24 La bellezza della donna fa gaia la faccia del suo marito, e infonde in lui un desiderio superiore ad ogni umana concupiscenza.
25 If she offers healing words, then she both comforts and shows mercy; and so her husband is not like other men.	25 Se poi essa ha una lingua sanatrice, piena di soavità e di bontà, suo marito non è come i figli degli uomini.
26 He who holds to a good wife establishes a possession. She is a helper in agreement with him, and she is a pillar of rest.	26 Chi possiede una virtuosa moglie comincia il patrimonio, ha un aiuto simile a sè e una colonna d'appoggio.
27 Where there is no hedge, a possession will be trampled. And where there is no wife, he will mourn her absence.	27 Dove non è siepe sarà devastato il possesso, dove non c'è donna l'uomo sospira nella miseria.
28 Who will trust one who has no nest, and who conceals himself wherever his course may take him, like a well-equipped robber passing from city to city?	28 Chi si fida di uno che non ha nido, che va a dormire dove lo coglie il buio della notte, come succinto ladro che salta da una città all'altra?
