Sirach 20

1 How much better is it to reprove, than to become angry, so as not to hinder him who may confess in prayer.	1 Oh! quanto melhor é admoestar que irritar-se, e não impedir de falar aquele que quer confessar a sua falta!
2 The lust of an eunuch will deflower a young maiden;	2 Como o eunuco que anseia por violentar uma donzela,
3 similar is he who by violence gives an iniquitous judgment.	3 assim é o que, por violência, faz um julgamento iníquo.
4 How good it is, when you are corrected, to show contrition! For in this way, you will escape deliberate sin.	4 Como é bom que o corrigido manifeste o seu arrependimento! Pois assim se evita um pecado voluntário.
5 There is one who, by remaining silent, is found to be wise. And there is another who is hateful and who provokes by speaking out.	5 Há quem se cale e é considerado sábio, e quem se torne odioso pela intemperança no falar.
6 There is one who, not having the understanding to speak, remains silent. And there is another who remains silent, knowing the proper time.	6 Há quem se cale por não saber falar, e há quem se cale porque reconhece quando é tempo (de falar).
7 A wise man will remain silent until the proper time. But an unrestrained and imprudent person will not heed the times.	7 O sábio permanece calado até o momento (oportuno), mas o leviano e imprudente não espera a ocasião.
8 Whoever uses many words will wound his own soul. And whoever unjustly takes authority upon himself will be hated.	8 Aquele que se expande em palavras, prejudica-se a si mesmo; quem se permite todo o desregramento torna-se odioso.
9 There is advancement in evil for an undisciplined man, and there is a plan which turns to his detriment.	9 Para o homem desprovido de instrução há proveito na infelicidade, mas há certas descobertas que lhe acarretam a ruína.
10 There is a gift which is not helpful, and there is a gift, the repayment for which is double.	10 Há dom que não é útil. e há dom que é duplamente recompensado.
11 There is a loss for the sake of boasting, and there is one who will lift up his head from lowliness.	11 Há quem ache a sua perda na própria glória, e há quem levantará a cabeça após uma humilhação.
12 There is one who buys much for a small price, and who pays it back sevenfold.	12 Há quem compre muito por um preço módico, mas que (de fato) o paga pelo sétuplo do seu valor.
13 Anyone wise in words makes himself loved. But the graces of the foolish will be poured away.	13 O sábio torna-se amável por suas palavras, enquanto que os encantos do insensato desaparecem.
14 A gift from the unwise will not benefit you. For his gaze is divided, sevenfold.	14 O donativo do insensato não te trará proveito, pois ele te fixa com sete olhos.
15 He will give little, and reproach much. And the opening of his mouth is like a burning flame.	15 Ele dá pouco e censura muitas vezes; quando abre a sua boca é como uma fogueira.
16 There is one who lends today and demands repayment tomorrow. A man such as this is hateful.	16 Há quem empresta hoje e amanhã o reclama. Tal homem é odioso.
17 A foolish man will not have a friend, and there will be no thanks for his good deeds.	17 O insensato não tem amigos, e pelo bem que faz não será bem acatado,
18 For those who eat his bread have a false tongue. How often and how many are those who will ridicule him!	18 porque os que comem o seu pão têm línguas falsas; quantas e quantas vezes não zombarão dele?
19 For what he possesses, he does not distribute with correct understanding. And he acts similarly with what he does not possess.	19 Pois não agiu com bom senso, distribuindo o que devia guardar e o que não devia guardar.
20 The slip of a false tongue is like someone who falls upon pavement. Such a fall for the wicked will arrive quickly.	20 A queda de uma língua mentirosa é como uma queda na laje; assim a ruína dos maus virá de repente.
21 A disagreeable man is like a pointless fable; it will be continually in the mouth of the undisciplined.	21 Um homem desagradável é como uma história ruim, que se acha continuamente na boca das pessoas mal-educadas.
22 A parable from the mouth of a fool will be rejected. For he does not speak it at the proper time.	22 Será mal recebida a máxima que sair da boca do insensato, pois que ele a diz fora de tempo.
23 There is one who is prevented from sinning by poverty, and in his rest, he will be vexed.	23 Há quem se abstenha de pecar por falta de meios, mas ressente o aguilhão do pecado até em seu repouso.
24 There is one who will lose his own soul because of pretense, and he will lose it by an example of imprudence. For by seeking the approval of another, he will destroy himself.	24 Há quem perca a sua alma por causa do respeito humano; perde-a, cedendo a uma pessoa imprudente; perde-se por atender demasiadamente a uma pessoa.
25 There is one who, for the sake of what other’s think, makes a promise to a friend, and so he gains him as an enemy for no reason.	25 Há quem, por falsa vergonha, faça uma promessa a um amigo, e dele se faça gratuitamente um inimigo.
26 A lie is a wicked disgrace to a man, and yet lies will be continually in the mouths of those without discipline.	26 A mentira é no homem uma vergonhosa mancha: não deixa os lábios das pessoas mal-educadas.
27 A thief is better than a man who constantly lies. But both of them will inherit perdition.	27 Mais vale um ladrão do que um mentiroso contumaz, mas ambos terão a ruína como partilha.
28 The habits of lying men are without honor. And their shame is with them without ceasing.	28 O comportamento dos mentirosos é aviltante, sua vergonha jamais os abandonará.
29 A wise man will benefit himself by his own words, and a prudent man will please the powerful.	29 O sábio atrai a si a estima por suas palavras; o homem prudente agradará aos poderosos.
30 Whoever works his land will raise high a stockpile of grain. And whoever works justice will himself be raised high. Yet truly, whoever pleases the powerful will escape unfair treatment.	30 Quem cultiva sua terra colherá montes de frutos; quem cultiva a justiça será ele próprio elevado; quem agrada aos poderosos fugirá da iniqüidade.
31 Presents and gifts blind the eyes of judges, and silence their mouths, turning them aside from their task of correction.	31 Os presentes e as dádivas cegam os olhos dos juízes. São em sua boca como um freio que os torna mudos e os impede de castigar.
32 Wisdom hidden, and treasure unseen: of what use is either of these?	32 Sabedoria escondida é tesouro invisível. Para que serve uma e outro?
33 He who hides his foolishness is better than a man who conceals his wisdom.	33 Mais vale aquele que dissimula sua insipiência, do que aquele que esconde sua sabedoria.
