Sirach 14

1 Blessed is the man who has not slipped because of a word from his mouth, and who has not been stung by grief because of an offense.	1 Beato l'uomo, che non ha fatto mancamento colle parole della sua bocca, e non è punto da rimorso di peccato.
2 Happy is he who does not have sadness in his mind, and who has not fallen away from his hope.	2 Felice colui, che non ha nell'animo suo tristezza, e non ha perduta la sua speranza.
3 Substance is senseless for a greedy and stingy man. And what would a spiteful man do with gold?	3 Per l'uomo cupido, e tenace sono inutili le ricchezze; e che farà dell'oro l'uomo insidioso?
4 Whoever acquires unjustly, according to his own mind, gathers for others. For another will spend his goods lavishly.	4 Chi accumula con defraudare in giustamente se stesso, accumula per altri, e un altro sguazzerà ne' beni di lui.
5 Whoever is wicked to himself, to whom will he be good? For he will not take enjoyment in his own goods.	5 Con chi sarà egli buono chi è cattivo verso se stesso, e non ritrae veruna soddisfazione da suoi beni?
6 Whoever has ill will toward himself, nothing is more worthless than he is. But such is the reward of his wickedness.	6 Nulla v'ha di più iniquo di colui, che è invidioso verso se stesso; e questa, è la mercede della sua malignità.
7 And if he does good, he does it ignorantly and unwillingly. And in the very end, he realizes his own malice.	7 Che se egli fa qualche bene, senza saperlo lo fa, e senza volerlo: e alla fine manifesta la sua malizia.
8 The eye of the spiteful man is wicked, and he averts his face and despises his own soul.	8 Cattivo è l'occhio dell'invidioso, egli volta altrove la faccia, e disprezza l'anima propria.
9 The eye of the greedy man is insatiable in his portion of iniquity. He will not be satisfied until he has consumed his own soul, withering it away.	9 L'occhio dell'avaro non si sazia di una porzione ingiusta: non si sazierà fino a tanto, che abbia consumata, e strutta la sua vita.
10 An evil eye is directed at evil things. And he will not be satisfied by bread; instead, he will be needy and grieving at his own table.	10 L'occhio maligno è inteso al male, e non si caverà la fame, ma resterà famelico, e malinconico alla sua mensa.
11 Son, if you have anything, do good to yourself, and offer worthy oblations to God.	11 Figliuolo di quello, che hai, fattene del bene, e fanne obblazioni degne a Dio.
12 Remember that death has not been delayed, and that the covenant of the grave has been revealed to you. For the covenant of this world will pass away in death.	12 Ricorditi della morte, la quale non tarda, e della legge intimata a te di andar nel sepolcro: perocché è legge di questo secolo il morire assolutamente.
13 Do good to your friend before you die. And according to your ability, extend your hand and give to the poor.	13 Fa del bene al tuo amico prima di morire, e stendi la mano liberale verso del povero secondo la tua possibilità.
14 Do not cheat yourself out of a good day, and do not let the smallest good gift pass you by.	14 Non ti privare di un buon giorno, e del buon dono non perderne nissuna parte.
15 Should you not leave it to others to divide your sorrows and labors by lot?	15 Non lascerai tu i tuoi sudori, e te fatiche ad altri da divìdersi a sorte tra loro?
16 Give, and receive, and justify your soul.	16 Da, e ricevi, e giustifica l'anima tua.
17 Before your passing, accomplish justice. For in death, there is no food to be found.	17 Pratica la giustizia prima della tua morte; perocché non si può trovar cibo nel sepolcro.
18 All flesh grows old like the grass, and like the foliage that springs forth from a green tree.	18 Ogni carne appassisce com'erba, e come delle foglie, che spuntano da verde pianta,
19 Some spring up, and others fall away. Such is the generation of flesh and blood. One is finished, and another is born.	19 Altre nascono, e altre cadono a terra, cosi delle generazioni della carne, e del sangue una finisce, e una nasce.
20 Every corruptible work will fail in the end. And its worker will go with it.	20 Tutte le opere soggette alla corruzione verran meno una volta, e se n'anderà con esse colui, che le ha fatte.
21 But every excellent work will be justified. And whoever worked it will be honored by it.	21 Ma tutte le opere elette saranno approvate, e chi le fece sarà per esse onorato.
22 Blessed is the man who will abide in wisdom, and who will meditate on her righteousness, and who, in his mind, will consider the circumspection of God.	22 Beato l'uomo, che è costante nella sapienza, e medita la giustizia, e colla sua mente pensa a Dio, che tutto vede all'intorno.
23 He considers her ways in his heart, and he finds understanding in her secrets. He goes after her like an investigator, and he is constant in her ways.	23 Il quale va studiando in cuor suo le vie di lei, e ne penetra gli arcani, e va dietro a lei per rintracciarla, e dalle strade di lei non esce.
24 He gazes through her windows, and he listens at her door.	24 Il quale per le finestre di lei rimira, e alla porta di lei sta a udire:
25 He rests next to her house, and, fastening a peg in her walls, he sets up his cottage by her hands. And so, good things will find rest in his cottage as time passes.	25 E presso alla casa di lei prende i suoi riposi, e fitto nette mura di essa un palo si fa un piccolo padiglione accanto a lei, e in questo piccolo padiglione avranno stanza perpetua tutti i beni.
26 He will station his sons under her covering, and he will abide under her branches.	26 Alla tutela di lei raccomanderà egli i suoi figliuoli, ed egli starà sotto i rami di lei:
27 He will be protected by her covering from the heat, and he will rest in her glory.	27 E sotto l'ombra di lei sarà difeso dal caldo; e nella gloria di lei avrà riposo.
