CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINDOUAI-RHEIMS
A Canticle in steps. When the Lord turned back the captivity of Zion, we became like those who are consoled.1 If it had not been that the Lord was with us, let Israel now say:
Then our mouth was filled with gladness and our tongue with exultation. Then they will say among the nations: “The Lord has done great things for them.”2 If it had not been that the Lord was with us, When men rose up against us
The Lord has done great things for us. We have become joyful.3 perhaps they had swallowed us up alive. When their fury was enkindled against us,
Convert our captivity, O Lord, like a torrent in the south.4 perhaps the waters had swallowed us up.
Those who sow in tears shall reap in exultation.5 Our soul hath passed through a torrent: perhaps our soul had passed through a water insupportable.
When departing, they went forth and wept, sowing their seeds.6 Blessed be the Lord, who hath not given us to be a prey to their teeth.
But when returning, they will arrive with exultation, carrying their sheaves.7 Our soul hath been delivered as a sparrow out of the snare of the followers. The snare is broken, and we are delivered.
Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
