1 After this, Job opened his mouth and cursed his day,	1 Enfim, Jó abriu a boca e amaldiçoou o dia de seu nascimento.
2 and this is what he said:	2 Jó falou nestes termos:
3 May the day perish on which I was born, and the night, in which it was said, “A man has been conceived.”	3 “Pereça o dia em que nasci e a noite em que foi dito: ‘Nasceu um menino!’.
4 May that day be turned into darkness, may God not seek it from above, and may light not illuminate it.	4 Que esse dia se torne em trevas! Que Deus, lá do alto, não se incomode com ele, que a luz não brilhe sobre ele!
5 Let darkness and the shadow of death obscure it, let a fog overtake it, and let it be enveloped in bitterness.	5 Que trevas e obscuridade se apoderem dele, que nuvens o envolvam, que eclipses o apavorem,
6 Let a whirlwind of darkness take hold of that night, let it not be counted in the days of the year, nor numbered in the months.	6 que a sombra o domine. Esse dia, que não seja contado entre os dias do ano, nem seja computado entre os meses!
7 May that night be alone and unworthy of praise.	7 Que seja estéril essa noite, que nenhum grito de alegria se faça ouvir nela.
8 May they curse it, who curse the day, who are prepared to awaken a leviathan.	8 Que a amaldiçoem os que amaldiçoam o dia, aqueles que são hábeis para evocar Leviatã!
9 Let the stars be concealed with its darkness. Let it expect light, and not see it, nor the rising of the dawn in the East.	9 Que as estrelas de sua madrugada se obscureçam, em vão espere a luz e não veja abrirem-se as pálpebras da aurora.
10 For it did not close the doors of the womb that bore me, nor take away evils from my eyes.	10 Pois não me fechou as portas do ventre que me carregou para me poupar a vista do mal!
11 Why did I not die in the womb? Having left the womb, why did I not immediately perish?	11 Por que não morri ainda no seio materno, ou pereci ao sair das entranhas?
12 Why was I received upon the knees? Why was I suckled at the breasts?	12 Por que dois joelhos me acolheram, e dois seios me amamentaram?
13 For by now, I should have been sleeping silently, and taking rest in my sleep	13 Estaria agora deitado e em paz, dormiria e teria o repouso
14 with the kings and consuls of the earth, who build themselves solitudes,	14 com os reis, árbitros da terra, que constroem para si mausoléus;
15 either with princes, who possess gold and fill their houses with silver,	15 ou estaria entre os príncipes que possuíam o ouro, e enchiam de dinheiro as suas casas.
16 or, like a hidden miscarriage, I should not have continued, just like those who, being conceived, have not seen the light.	16 Ou, então, como o aborto escondido, eu não teria existido, como as crianças que não viram a luz.
17 There the impious cease from rebellion, and there the wearied in strength take rest.	17 Ali, os ímpios cessam os seus furores, ali, repousam os exaustos de forças.
18 And at such times, having been bound together without difficulty, they have not heard the voice of the bailiff.	18 Ali, os prisioneiros estão tranquilos, já não mais ouvem a voz do capataz.
19 The small and great are there, and the servant is free from his master.	19 Ali, juntos, os pequenos e os grandes se encontram, o escravo ali está livre do jugo do seu senhor.
20 Why is light given to the miserable, and life to those who are in bitterness of soul,	20 Por que concede ele a luz aos infelizes e a vida àqueles cuja alma está desconsolada,
21 who expect death, and it does not arrive, like those who dig for treasure	21 que esperam pela morte sem que ela venha, e a procuram mais ardentemente do que um tesouro,
22 and who rejoice greatly when they have found the grave,	22 que se alegrariam intensamente diante do sepulcro?
23 to a man whose way is hidden and whom God has surrounded with darkness?	23 Ao homem, cujo caminho está oculto, a quem Deus cerca de todos os lados?
24 Before I eat, I sigh; and like overflowing waters, so is my howl,	24 Em lugar do pão tenho o soluço, e os meus gemidos se espalham como a água.
25 for the terror that I feared has happened to me, and so has the dread befallen me.	25 Todos os meus temores se realizam, e aquilo que me dá medo vem atingir-me.
26 Have I not remained hidden? Have I not kept silence? Have I not remained calm? Yet indignation has overcome me.	26 Não tenho paz, nem descanso, nem repouso; o que vem é agitação”.
