Therefore, Abram ascended from Egypt, he and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, toward the southern region.1 D'Egypte, Abram avec sa femme et tout ce qu'il possédait, et Lot avec lui, remonta au Négeb.
But he was very wealthy by the possession of gold and silver.2 Abram était très riche en troupeaux, en argent et en or.
And he returned by the way that he came, from the meridian into Bethel, all the way to the place where before he had pitched his tent, between Bethel and Hai.3 Ses campements le conduisirent du Négeb jusqu'à Béthel, à l'endroit où sa tente s'était dresséed'abord entre Béthel et Aï,
There, at the place of the altar he had made before, he again called upon the name of the Lord.4 à l'endroit de l'autel qu'il avait érigé précédemment, et là, Abram invoqua le nom de Yahvé.
But Lot also, who was with Abram, had flocks of sheep, and cattle, and tents.5 Lot, qui accompagnait Abram, avait également du petit et du gros bétail, ainsi que des tentes.
Neither was the land able to contain them, so that they might dwell together. Indeed, their substance was so great that they could not live in common.6 Le pays ne suffisait pas à leur installation commune: ils avaient de trop grands biens pour pouvoirhabiter ensemble.
And then there also arose a conflict between the shepherds of Abram and of Lot. Now at that time the Canaanite and the Perizzite lived in that land.7 Il y eut une dispute entre les pâtres des troupeaux d'Abram et ceux des troupeaux de Lot (lesCananéens et les Perizzites habitaient alors le pays).
Therefore, Abram said to Lot: “I ask you, let there be no quarrel between me and you, and between my shepherds and your shepherds. For we are brothers.
Behold, the entire land is before your eyes. Withdraw from me, I beg you. If you will go to the left, I will take the right. If you choose the right, I will pass to the left.”
And so Lot, lifting up his eyes, saw all the region around the Jordan, which was thoroughly irrigated, before the Lord overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. It was like the Paradise of the Lord, and it was like Egypt, approaching toward Zoar.10 Lot leva les yeux et vit toute la Plaine du Jourdain qui était partout irriguée -- c'était avant queYahvé ne détruisît Sodome et Gomorrhe -- comme le jardin de Yahvé, comme le pays d'Egypte, jusque versCoar.
And Lot chose for himself the region around the Jordan, and he withdrew by way of the east. And they were divided, one brother from the other.11 Lot choisit pour lui toute la Plaine du Jourdain et il émigra à l'orient; ainsi ils se séparèrent l'un del'autre:
Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan. In truth, Lot stayed in the towns that were around the Jordan, and he lived in Sodom.12 Abram s'établit au pays de Canaan et Lot s'établit dans les villes de la Plaine; il dressa ses tentesjusqu'à Sodome.
But the men of Sodom were very wicked, and they were sinners before the Lord beyond measure.13 Les gens de Sodome étaient de grands scélérats et pécheurs contre Yahvé.
And the Lord said to Abram, after Lot was divided from him: “Lift up your eyes, and gaze out from the place where you are now, to the north and to the meridian, to the east and to the west.14 Yahvé dit à Abram, après que Lot se fut séparé de lui: "Lève les yeux et regarde, de l'endroit où tues, vers le nord et le midi, vers l'orient et l'occident.
All the land that you see, I will give to you, and to your offspring even forever.15 Tout le pays que tu vois, je le donnerai à toi et à ta postérité pour toujours.
And I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth. If any man is able to number the dust of the earth, he will be able to number your offspring as well.16 Je rendrai ta postérité comme la poussière de la terre: quand on pourra compter les grains depoussière de la terre, alors on comptera tes descendants!
Arise and walk through the land in its length, and breadth. For I will give it to you.”17 Debout! Parcours le pays en long et en large, car je te le donnerai."
Therefore, moving his tent, Abram went and dwelt by the steep valley of Mamre, which is in Hebron. And he built an altar there to the Lord.18 Avec ses tentes, Abram alla s'établir au Chêne de Mambré, quiest à Hébron, et là, il érigea unautel à Yahvé.
