Therefore, Abram ascended from Egypt, he and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, toward the southern region.1 De Egipto subió Abram al Négueb, junto con su mujer y todo lo suyo, y acompañado de Lot.
But he was very wealthy by the possession of gold and silver.2 Abram era muy rico en ganado, plata y oro.
And he returned by the way that he came, from the meridian into Bethel, all the way to the place where before he had pitched his tent, between Bethel and Hai.3 Caminando de acampada en acampada se dirigió desde el Négueb hasta Betel, hasta el lugar donde estuvo su tienda entre Betel y Ay,
There, at the place of the altar he had made before, he again called upon the name of the Lord.4 el lugar donde había invocado Abram el nombre de Yahveh.
But Lot also, who was with Abram, had flocks of sheep, and cattle, and tents.5 También Lot, que iba con Abram, tenía ovejas, vacadas y tiendas.
Neither was the land able to contain them, so that they might dwell together. Indeed, their substance was so great that they could not live in common.6 Ya la tierra no les permitía vivir juntos, porque su hacienda se había multiplicado, de modo que no podían vivir juntos.
And then there also arose a conflict between the shepherds of Abram and of Lot. Now at that time the Canaanite and the Perizzite lived in that land.7 Hubo riña entre los pastores del ganado de Abram y los del ganado de Lot. (Además los cananeos y los perizitas habitaban por entonces en el país.)
Therefore, Abram said to Lot: “I ask you, let there be no quarrel between me and you, and between my shepherds and your shepherds. For we are brothers.8 Dijo, pues, Abram a Lot: «Ea, no haya disputas entre nosotros ni entre mis pastores y tus pastores, pues somos hermanos.
Behold, the entire land is before your eyes. Withdraw from me, I beg you. If you will go to the left, I will take the right. If you choose the right, I will pass to the left.”9 ¿No tienes todo el país por delante? Pues bien, apártate de mi lado. Si tomas por la izquierda, yo iré por la derecha; y si tú por la derecha, yo por la izquierda.»
And so Lot, lifting up his eyes, saw all the region around the Jordan, which was thoroughly irrigated, before the Lord overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. It was like the Paradise of the Lord, and it was like Egypt, approaching toward Zoar.10 Lot levantó los ojos y vio toda la vega del Jordán, toda ella de regadío - eran antes de destruir Yahveh a Sodoma y Gomorra - como el jardín de Yahveh, como Egipto, hasta llegar a Soar.
And Lot chose for himself the region around the Jordan, and he withdrew by way of the east. And they were divided, one brother from the other.11 Eligió, pues, Lot para sí toda la vega del Jordán, y se trasladó al oriente; así se apartaron el uno del otro.
Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan. In truth, Lot stayed in the towns that were around the Jordan, and he lived in Sodom.12 Abram se estableció en Canaán y Lot en las ciudades de la vega, donde plantó sus tiendas hasta Sodoma.
But the men of Sodom were very wicked, and they were sinners before the Lord beyond measure.13 Los habitantes de Sodoma eran muy malos y pecadores contra Yahveh.
And the Lord said to Abram, after Lot was divided from him: “Lift up your eyes, and gaze out from the place where you are now, to the north and to the meridian, to the east and to the west.14 Dijo Yahveh a Abram, después que Lot se separó de él: «Alza tus ojos y mira desde el lugar en donde estás hacia el norte, el mediodía, el oriente y el poniente.
All the land that you see, I will give to you, and to your offspring even forever.15 Pues bien, toda la tierra que ves te la daré a ti ya tu descendencia por siempre.
And I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth. If any man is able to number the dust of the earth, he will be able to number your offspring as well.16 Haré tu descendencia como el polvo de la tierra: tal que si alguien puede contar el polvo de la tierra, también podrá contar tu descendencia.
Arise and walk through the land in its length, and breadth. For I will give it to you.”17 Levántate, recorre el país a lo largo y a lo ancho, porque a ti te lo he de dar.»
Therefore, moving his tent, Abram went and dwelt by the steep valley of Mamre, which is in Hebron. And he built an altar there to the Lord.18 Y Abram vino a establecerse con sus tiendas junto a la encina de Mambré, que está en Hebrón, y edificó allí un altar a Yahveh.
