1 Call now! Will anyone respond to you? To which of the holy ones will you appeal?	1 Grida pure! Ti risponderà forse qualcuno? E a chi fra i santi ti rivolgerai?
2 Nay, impatience kills the fool and indignation slays the simpleton.	2 Poiché la collera uccide lo stolto e l’invidia fa morire lo sciocco.
3 I have seen a fool spreading his roots, but his household suddenly decayed.	3 Ho visto lo stolto mettere radici e subito ho dichiarato maledetta la sua dimora.
4 His children shall be far from safety; they shall be crushed at the gate without a rescuer.	4 I suoi figli non sono mai al sicuro, e in tribunale sono oppressi, senza difensore;
5 What they have reaped the hungry shall eat up; (or God shall take it away by blight;) and the thirsty shall swallow their substance.	5 l’affamato ne divora la messe, anche se ridotta a spine, la porterà via e gente assetata agognerà le sue sostanze.
6 For mischief comes not out of the earth, nor does trouble spring out of the ground;	6 Non esce certo dal suolo la sventura né germoglia dalla terra il dolore,
7 But man himself begets mischief, as sparks fly upward.	7 ma è l’uomo che genera pene, come le scintille volano in alto.
8 In your place, I would appeal to God, and to God I would state my plea.	8 Io, invece, mi rivolgerei a Dio e a Dio esporrei la mia causa:
9	9 a lui, che fa cose tanto grandi da non potersi indagare, meraviglie da non potersi contare,
10 He gives rain upon the earth and sends water upon the fields;	10 che dà la pioggia alla terra e manda l’acqua sulle campagne.
11 He sets up on high the lowly, and those who mourn he exalts to safety.	11 Egli esalta gli umili e solleva a prosperità gli afflitti;
12 He frustrates the plans of the cunning, so that their hands achieve no success;	12 è lui che rende vani i pensieri degli scaltri, perché le loro mani non abbiano successo.
13 He catches the wise in their own ruses, and the designs of the crafty are routed.	13 Egli sorprende i saccenti nella loro astuzia e fa crollare il progetto degli scaltri.
14 They meet with darkness in the daytime, and at noonday they grope as though it were night.	14 Di giorno incappano nel buio, in pieno sole brancolano come di notte.
15 But the poor from the edge of the sword and from the hand of the mighty, he saves.	15 Egli invece salva il povero dalla spada della loro bocca e dalla mano del violento.
16 Thus the unfortunate have hope, and iniquity closes her mouth.	16 C’è speranza per il misero, ma chi fa l’ingiustizia deve chiudere la bocca.
17 Happy is the man whom God reproves! The Almighty's chastening do not reject.	17 Perciò, beato l’uomo che è corretto da Dio: non sdegnare la correzione dell’Onnipotente,
18 For he wounds, but he binds up; he smites, but his hands give healing.	18 perché egli ferisce e fascia la piaga, colpisce e la sua mano risana.
19 Out of six troubles he will deliver you, and at the seventh no evil shall touch you.	19 Da sei tribolazioni ti libererà e alla settima il male non ti toccherà;
20 In famine he will deliver you from death, and in war from the threat of the sword;	20 nella carestia ti libererà dalla morte e in guerra dal colpo della spada,
21 From the scourge of the tongue you shall be hidden, and shall not fear approaching ruin.	21 sarai al riparo dal flagello della lingua, né temerai quando giunge la rovina.
22 At destruction and want you shall laugh; the beasts of the earth you need not dread.	22 Della rovina e della fame riderai né temerai le bestie selvatiche;
23 You shall be in league with the stones of the field, and the wild beasts shall be at peace with you.	23 con le pietre del campo avrai un patto e le bestie selvatiche saranno in pace con te.
24 And you shall know that your tent is secure; taking stock of your household, you shall miss nothing.	24 Vedrai che sarà prospera la tua tenda, visiterai la tua proprietà e non sarai deluso.
25 You shall know that your descendants are many, and your offspring as the grass of the earth.	25 Vedrai che sarà numerosa la tua prole, i tuoi rampolli come l’erba dei prati.
26 You shall approach the grave in full vigor, as a shock of grain comes in at its season.	26 Te ne andrai alla tomba in piena maturità, come un covone raccolto a suo tempo.
27 Lo, this we have searched out; so it is! This we have heard, and you should know.	27 Ecco, questo l’abbiamo studiato a fondo, ed è vero. Ascoltalo e imparalo per il tuo bene».
