NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
The sons of Reuben, the first-born of Israel. (He was indeed the first-born, but because he disgraced the couch of his father his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph, son of Israel, so that he is not listed in the family records according to birthright.1 Filii quoque Ruben primogeniti Israel: ipse quippe fuit primoge nitus eius, sed, cum violasset torum patris sui, data sunt primogenita eius filiis Ioseph filii Israel, ut non computaretur in primogenitum,
Judah, in fact, became powerful among his brothers, so that the ruler came from him, though the birthright had been Joseph's.)2 quia Iuda erat quidem fortissimus inter fratres suos et de stirpe eius principes germinati sunt, primogenita autem reputata sunt Ioseph.
The sons of Reuben, the first-born of Israel, were Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.3 Filii ergo Ruben primogeniti Israel: Henoch et Phallu, Hesron et Charmi.
His son was Joel, whose son was Shemaiah, whose son was Gog, whose son was Shimei,4 Filii Ioel: Semeia filius eius, Gog filius eius, Semei filius eius,
whose son was Micah, whose son was Reaiah, whose son was Baal,5 Micha filius eius, Reaia filius eius, Baal filius eius,
whose son was Beerah, whom Tiglath-pileser, the king of Assyria, took into exile; he was a prince of the Reubenites.6 Beera filius eius, quem captivum duxit Theglathphalasar rex Assyriorum, et fuit princeps in tribu Ruben.
His brothers who belonged to his clans, when they were listed in the family records according to their descendants, were: Jeiel, the chief, and Zechariah,7 Fratres autem eius in cognationibus eius, quando numerabantur in genealogiis suis, erant: caput Iehiel, deinde Zacharias;
and Bela, son of Azaz, son of Shema, son of Joel. The Reubenites lived in Aroer and as far as Nebo and Baal-meon;8 porro Bela filius Azaz filii Samma filii Ioel, ipse habitavit in Aroer usque ad Nabo et Baalmeon.
toward the east they dwelt as far as the desert which extends from the Euphrates River, for they had much livestock in the land of Gilead.9 Contra orientalem quoque plagam habitavit usque ad introitum eremi, quae est inde a flumine Euphrate; multum quippe gregum eorum numerus creverat in terra Galaad.
During the reign of Saul they waged war with the Hagrites, and when they had defeated them they occupied their tents throughout the region east of Gilead.10 In diebus autem Saul proeliati sunt contra Agarenos et interfecerunt illos; habitaveruntque pro eis in tabernaculis eorum in omni plaga, quae respicit ad orientem Galaad.
The Gadites lived alongside them in the land of Bashan as far as Salecah.11 Filii vero Gad e regione eorum habitaverunt in terra Basan usque Salcha:
Joel was chief, Shapham was second in command, and Janai was judge in Bashan.12 Ioel in capite et Sapham secundus, porro Ianai et Saphat in Basan;
Their brothers, corresponding to their ancestral houses, were: Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jacan, Zia, and Eber--seven.13 fratres vero eorum secundum familias suas: Michael et Mosollam et Seba et Iorai et Iachan et Zie et Heber, septem.
These were the sons of Abihail, son of Huri, son of Jaroah, son of Gilead, son of Michael, son of Jeshishai, son of Jahdo, son of Buz.14 Hi filii Abihail filii Huri filii Iaroe filii Galaad filii Michael filii Iesesi filii Ieddo filii Buz.
Ahi, son of Abdiel, son of Guni, was the head of their ancestral houses.15 Ahi filius Abdiel filii Guni princeps familiarum eorum.
They dwelt in Gilead, in Bashan and its towns, and in all the pasture lands of Sirion to the borders.16 Et habitaverunt in Galaad et in Basan et in viculis eius et in cunctis suburbanis Saron usque ad terminos.
All were listed in the family records in the time of Jotham, king of Judah, and of Jeroboam, king of Israel.17 Omnes hi numerati sunt in diebus Ioatham regis Iudae et in diebus Ieroboam regis Israel.
The Reubenites, Gadites, and half-tribe of Manasseh were warriors, men who bore shield and sword and who drew the bow, trained in warfare--forty-four thousand seven hundred and sixty men fit for military service.18 Filii Ruben et Gad et dimidiae tribus Manasse viri bellatores scuta portantes et gladios et tendentes arcum eruditique ad proelia, quadraginta quattuor milia et septingenti sexaginta procedentes ad pugnam;
When they waged war against the Hagrites and against Jetur, Naphish, and Nodab,19 dimicaverunt contra Agarenos et Ituraeos et Naphisaeos et Nodabaeos.
they received help so that they mastered the Hagrites and all who were with them. For during the battle they called on God, and he heard them because they had put their trust in him.20 Et datum est eis auxilium, traditique sunt in manus eorum Agareni et universi, qui fuerant cum eis, quia Deum invocaverunt cum proeliarentur, et exaudivit eos, eo quod credidissent in eum.
Along with one hundred thousand men they also captured their livestock: fifty thousand camels, two hundred fifty thousand sheep, and two thousand asses.21 Ceperuntque omnia, quae possederant, camelorum quinquaginta milia et ovium ducenta quinquaginta milia, asinos duo milia et animas hominum centum milia;
Many had fallen in battle, for victory is from God; and they took over their dwelling place until the time of the exile.22 vulnerati autem multi corruerunt; fuit enim bellum Domini. Habitaveruntque pro eis usque ad transmigrationem.
The numerous members of the half-tribe of Manasseh lived in the land of Bashan as far as Baal-hermon, Senir, and Mount Hermon.23 Filii quoque dimidiae tribus Manasse possederunt terram a Basan usque Baalhermon et Sanir et montem Hermon; ingens quippe numerus erat.
The following were the heads of their ancestral houses: Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah, and Jahdiel--men who were warriors, famous men, and heads over their ancestral houses.24 Et hi fuerunt principes familiarum eorum: Epher et Iesi et Eliel et Azriel et Ieremia et Odovia et Iediel; viri bellatores fortissimi et nominati, duces in familiis suis.
However, they offended the God of their fathers by lusting after the gods of the natives of the land, whom God had cleared out of their way.25 Reliquerunt autem Deum patrum suorum et fornicati sunt post deos populorum terrae, quos abstulit Deus coram eis.
Therefore the God of Israel incited against them the anger of Pul, king of Assyria, and of Tiglath-pileser, king of Assyria, who deported the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh and brought them to Halah, Habor, and Hara, and to the river Gozan, where they have remained to this day.26 Et suscitavit Deus Israel spiritum Phul regis Assyriorum et spiritum Theglathphalasar regis Assur; et transtulit Ruben et Gad et dimidium tribus Manasse et adduxit eos in Hala et Habor et Ara et fluvium Gozan usque ad diem hanc.
